Lake Lure Vistas

Of course this well developed community of cultural and outdoor enthusiasts didn't spring up overnight; in fact a hundred years ago there was no lake at all! Originally the area was merely part of the Rocky Broad River's long journey through the Blue Ridge Mountains; tranquil and beautiful, the river was but a foreshadow of its eventual glory. It all began as the dream of Dr. Lucius Morse back in 1902 with the purchase, by Morse and his brothers, of 400 acres around Chimney Rock. Over the years they continued to acquire surrounding land until they owned a full 8,000 acres.
The Lake Lure Dam Construction
Construction of the Dam
Taking out a mortgage, they were able to fund the construction of a hydroelectric dam that both created the lake and provided electricity as well as revenue to the area. After a momentary halt in development and a foreclosure on the property due to the great depression, Lake Lure continued to grow in size until in 1965 the town itself was able to purchase the area. Since then the population has leveled off at around 1,000 while the community has dedicated itself to protecting the area's natural resources and preserving its beauty for generations to come.
