Sensibilities Spa – Hilton in Biltmore Park
Sensibilities Spa South Asheville location, attached to the Hilton in Biltmore Park, is the newest addition to the Sensibilities family of Spas. Sensibilities downtown recently celebrated their ten year anniversary and are widely considered the best spa in the Asheville area, having won numerous awards for their services including best spa of 2007 and 2008 by readers of the Mountain Xpress.
Speaking on Sensibilities success, founder Jen Charlton said, "Doing business in Asheville is really special. Clients here are genuinely nice people. They're laid back and believe in health and wellness already, we don't have to convince them. They are grateful for the energy that the staff gives them and for the work that we do."
The Hilton, which opened in August, has joined the Asheville area's commitment to sustainability by becoming one of the nation's first major hotels to "go green". Designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards put forth by the U.S. Green Building Council, the Hilton has done an impressive job to make their facility sustainable, including a solar water heating system on the top of the hotel that is one of the largest in Western Carolina.
Deciding to support local business, the Hilton broke with tradition and asked Charlton to open Sensibilities South Asheville, the first independent spa located within a Hilton hotel in the southeast.
Charlton explained, "When I was approached by Biltmore Farms [owners of the hotel] I saw it as a wonderful opportunity. I think one of the things that sets us apart is our staff. We do everything we can to create a good work environment so we have a low turnover rate and everyone works as a team. I've been lucky enough to surround myself with good people. The staff members at Sensibilities are not only good at what they do, they're warm and friendly like family. With the addition of a new location I was able to bring in a third more people and enlarge that family."
The philosophy of Sensibilities focuses on all-natural products exclusively using the Eminence Organic skin care line that contains the highest possible levels of all-natural organically grown herbs, fruits and vegetables. They are intent on giving back to the community; working closely with the Animal Compassion Network, Western North Carolina's largest animal welfare non-profit organization. Charlton was extremely excited to be involved in the design of the spa, "Incorporating the ideas of managers Allicia Pickett, Gina Pindell and the rest of the staff we were able to create an amazing space. It was a group effort from the beginning. It's so much fun and so gratifying to do anything from the ground up and to have a say in everything."
Hailing from New Orleans, Charlton put herself through college working in art galleries before falling in love with skincare and body treatment. Her background in art and art history shows in her support of local artists in the design of Sensibilities South location. Speaking on the local art displayed at Sensibilities Charlton said, "I wanted to show off the work of some of Asheville's best craftspeople and artists. I feel we give guests a good sample of what people can see in the community when they go out in Asheville." In an effort to set the tone of the spa and create a warm, uplifting space that "makes you breathe" Charlton commissioned work from local artists Dawn Rentz, Genie Maples, Betty Clark and Barbara Fisher, some of which is on consignment and available for purchase. Local potter Lorie Theriault created all the cups and plates used at the spa.
Jonathan Wainscott worked with Charlton on the space plan and woodwork to create a space that is intimate but open and flowing. They are incorporating sustainable bamboo flooring and stone tiling that pay homage to Western Carolina's beautiful mountains. A highlight of Sensibilities’ design is a collection of hand-made glass panels by Charles Donaldson featuring bamboo that mirrors the flooring, dragonflies, and of course, the signature sparrows whom the staff have given pet names.
Upstairs, guests are greeted in the reception area and can treat themselves to Sensibilities' craft-conscious natural nail care services. Sensibilities uses 100% vegan therapeutic nail treatments, which are free of parabens, petrochemicals, DBP, formaldehyde and toluene. They offer additions as well as restorative and elemental stone manicures and pedicures.
