Description:

This show contains mature material, and it is recommended for ages 17 and up only. Anyone age 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent.

The Vagina Monologues is a play written by Eve Ensler, and is based on interviews with over 200 women. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the play being performed across the world. The purpose of the Monologues is to raise funds and awareness for anti-violence groups in our local communities in an effort to end domestic and sexual violence against women. 90% percent of the proceeds from this production will go directly to Helpmate of Asheville (www.helpmateonline.org), 10% of the proceeds benefit the international V-Day spotlight campaign: The Resistance, and all of our cast are volunteers.

This is not just a show for women; men are especially encouraged to attend. These are issues that affect your mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and friends. And you know what? Although there are aspects of the show that are heart-wrenching, the majority of it is absolutely hilarious!

This event is a fundraising effort spearheaded by Allison Taylor of WNC Weddings & Events (www.wncweddings.net) and Skillful Solutions, LLC (www.skillfulsolutions.net), who is managing the casting, directing, and producing, as well as contributing on-stage. She will be joined by a phenomenal cast of local women, who will make you laugh hysterically, cringe in empathy, and emerge with passion and hope. Her productions have raised over $25,000 for local women’s shelters over the past five years.

The Vagina Monologues is part of the V-Day campaign where volunteers produce a benefit performance in the community to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within our own communities. V-Day is a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. Use your voice by joining the ONE BILLION RISING movement. Make a promise that you will rise up with women and men worldwide to say, “Enough! The violence ends now.” To learn more, please visit www.vday.org.

Description:
Could you be the voice for an abused/neglected child in the court system? Volunteers needed in Buncombe County North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program 828-259-3443 or www.volunteerforgal.org for more info No experienced needed – all training and support provided Since January 1, 2017, 360 children have entered the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program – this means that 343 kids are alleged to have been abused/neglected and are in the court system. Of no fault of their own, these kids are typically removed from their home and placed and in foster care or a kinship placement. Why were they removed from the home? Maybe their parents abused substances, had untreated mental health, or engaged in domestic violence – maybe it was a combination of these factors. Either way, it’s the kids who pay the ultimate penalty as their lives are uprooted, they often change school districts and are taken away from everything they know. There are so many parties in a DSS abuse/neglect case: the judge, parents/caretakers, parent’s attorneys, DSS attorneys, GAL attorneys, investigative/in-home/foster care social workers…it’s easy to see how the kids get lost in the system. That’s where the role of the Guardian ad Litem comes in: to advocate and ensure the voice of the child is heard in court, that their wishes for permanency and best interest are made known to all parties. With so many kids in the GAL program, our office is overwhelmed with cases, and we have a critical need for volunteers to represent children’s best interests in court. There is no experience necessary and we provide all training and support. Being a GAL is a challenging and demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding as you literally ensure the child’s voice is heard in court throughout the life of the case. Our next training begins mid-January – visit www.volunteerforgal.org to complete a volunteer application, or call the office at 828-259-3443 for more information. Could you be the voice for a child?

Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s February show features the work of two new members, Ana Blanton and Zoe Schumaker. Though they paint in two different styles and mediums, the artists’ work represents the inspiration each derives from nature. The show runs February 1-28 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artists on Friday, February 2, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. “When I process ideas, I see them as layers of images rather than words, and as my thoughts become imagery, I feel more comfortable expressing myself through abstract form,” says Ana Blanton. Of her latest series of mixed-media paintings she says, “In this series I am more interested in representing the sense and feel of light in nature. It is about exploring the sense of energy and movement that is unique to light traveling through air, water, and objects in nature or a simple still life.” Blanton, who has lived in Asheville since 1997, has a BA in Art Studio from Mars Hill University. She studied Art Conservation at University of Madrid, Spain, and mural painting and mural Conservation at the International School of Mural Painting Miguel Farre, Barcelona, Spain. Zoe Schumaker says, “From an early age, I tried to capture the beauty I saw by drawing and photographing my surroundings.” Raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California, the artist spent many afternoons immersed in imaginative drawings of the mountains, lakes and forests, and the animals that live there. Schumaker rediscovered her passion for painting upon moving to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2005. “As I explored the area, I started bringing my backpack kit of pastels. It was not long before I decided to pursue art full time.” The artist teaches painting at the John C. Campbell Folk School and is active in several regional environmental non-profits. She frequently donates her work to support these causes. “Nature is my muse. I hope my paintings capture the joy and reverence I feel for our beautiful home.” The featured works by Blanton and Schumaker, as well as the paintings of the other 29 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of February. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

The Vagina Monologues is a play written by Eve Ensler, and is based on interviews with over 200 women. The purpose of the Monologues is to raise funds and awareness for anti-violence groups in our local communities in an effort to end domestic and sexual violence against women. 90% of the proceeds from this year’s event will benefit SAFE, Inc. of Transylvania County - which offers crisis-level services for victims of domestic violence and their children. The remaining 10% of the proceeds will benefit an international non-profit supporting women across the globe. Allison Taylor of WNC Weddings & Events (www.wncweddings.net) and Skillful Solutions (www.skillfulsolutions.net) will be directing, producing, and acting in this charity production for the 6th year. The cast is diverse group of talented ladies who all graciously donate their time and talents to this event. “Over the past 5 years, I’m proud to say that we’ve raised and donated over $25,000 to local organizations that support those who suffer from domestic violence,” says Taylor. This is not just a show for women; men are especially encouraged to attend. “These are issues that affect your mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and friends. Although there are heart-wrenching parts to the show, many of the monologues are absolutely hilarious - and attendees tend to walk away with sore cheeks and stomachs from laughing,” says Taylor. This production will be held at The DFR Room in Brevard on February 23rd. The doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Tickets are available on-line at www.etix.com, or at the door, although, this annual event typically sells out. Prices are $25 in advance/$35 at the door for General Admission, and $15 in advance/$20 at the door for students. Please remember that 100% of the proceeds from this event go to a charitable cause. The Monologues definitely contain mature material, and it is recommended for ages 17 and up. Anyone age 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Those wishing to make a financial contribution to the cause can donate directly to SAFE, Inc. (http://safebrevard.com/), referencing “Vagina Monologues”. WHERE: Ambrose West, 312 Haywood Road, 28806WHEN: Saturday February 24, 2018DOORS: 7pm | SHOW: 8pmGENRE: Simon & Garfunkel / Beatles tributeAGES: all agesTICKETS: $12 adv. / $15 d.o.s. / $20 VIPSEATING: seated general admission WEB LISTINGThe concept of scaling down obscure and beloved Beatles tunes hatched during a conversation Peggy Ratusz shared with Jonathan Pearlman several years ago. They figured, with all the tribute and specialty shows taking place around the country, no one had truly done much with Beatles tunes, other than copy them verbatim. Pearlman has been brainstorming arrangements and Ratusz tests them out during their many acoustic shows together. Encouraged by the applause they receive each time they do their versions of classics like Oh Darlin, Two Of Us, Back in the USSR, I’ll Follow the Sun, they decided it was time to put the finishing touches on these songs and present them in a special show. Because the two of them grew up listening to, learning and playing Simon and Garfunkel’s tunes, they determined it to be a no brainer, to throw some of their greatest hits into this special night, bridging the acoustic sensibilities of Simon and Garfunkel with the rock and roll aesthetic of the Beatles. Their buddies Eric Congdon on guitar and vocals and Grant Cuthbertson on upright bass will add the missing links to the arrangements and play key roles in developing and bringing their initial concept to fruition! For ONE NIGHT ONLY: “Bridge," Simon and Garfunkel meet the Beatles will soothe, move and groove you!Hendersonville, NC based guitarist Eric Congdon has a low-key virtuosity. His style radiates both skill and charm. Whether playing solo or with a small ensemble, Congdon's forceful yet delicate style doesn't flaunt as much as it insinuates. The N.C.-based Congdon has been playing for 30 years. Congdon counts Tommy Emmanuel and Rev. Gary Davis among his influences. His latest album is called “Acoustic Wanderer.”Grant Cuthbertson, now residing in Flat Rock, NC, has been in integral part of the music scene in Asheville for over 30 years. He is one of the main reasons why it thrives as it does. He wears many hats and provides the area’s most notable venues with quality sound equipment. An accomplished bassist both electric and upright, Grant’s love of all things Latin and Jazz as well as Blues, Swing & Gypsy Jazz, has made him one of the MOST sought after players in WNC.Guitarist and virtuoso, Jonathan Pearlman’s (aka, JP) influences are far-reaching, absorbing Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Clapton, and Motown. Jazz-fusion bands of the early 70’s werealso influential, like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Frank Zappa. He also hosts the weekly Alien Music Club Jazz Jam at Barley’s Taproom in Asheville every Thursday night. “It’s a great opportunity to meet and share musical ideas with some of the best players while at the same time mentoring young musicians!” Peggy Ratusz is a well-established presence in the Asheville music scene. Chosen as Best Blues Artist by Mountain Xpress for ten years running, she performs an infectious, sultry, multi-layered brand of original, traditional and modern Blues, Soul and Jazz. Every drop of emotion is authentic and shows all who are present that she’s a willing servant to Jazz, Blues and Old School Soul.

"The real thing, people." -BillboardIn 2018 American singer-songwriter Martin Sexton extends touring in support of his ninth studio release Mixtape of the Open Road. The Wall Street Journal and CMT premiered tracks from the album that since garnered much critical acclaim. "Outstanding taste in songwriting as well as a soul-marinated voice." -Rollingstone Syracuse native Sexton got his start singing in the streets and subways of Boston in the early 90's. Still fiercely independent and headlining venues from The Fillmore to Carnegie Hall, he has influenced a generation of contemporary artists. His songs have appeared in television series such as Scrubs, Parenthood, Masters of Sex and in numerous films, though it's his incendiary live show, honest lyrics, and vocal prowess that keep fans coming back for more.

Genre: BluegrassCover: Donations @ DoorShow: 10PMAges: 21+FrazierBandJohn Frazier, The A-Session musician’s musician, known for his brilliant mastery of the mandolin, guitar and the fiddle, is about to launch his sophomore album for FrazierBand. He has created an entirely new sound, developed by combining past musical influences of bluegrass, rock, and roots music, into what is being penned as “Progressive Bluegrass Fusion” and “Newgrass.”John is a Philadelphia native and educated at the Episcopal Academy and the University of Colorado-Boulder. He brings a powerful, eclectic history as an acoustic and bluegrass performer into his leadership of FrazierBand. Moving to Nashville in the winter of 2006/2007, the veteran musician quickly established himself among Music City’s elite acoustic performers and is the liver and session musician of choice by such mentors as John Cowan and Jim Lauderdale due to his superlative musicianship.Frazier’s earlier group Hit & Run Bluegrass made history as the first band to win both prestigious band competitions at Rockygrass (2002) and Telluride Bluegrass Festival (2003). One of the state’s most electrifying acoustic touring acts, the group brought its all-string, “authentic yet modern” bluegrass throughout the U.S. and Canada, including top festivals like Grey Fox and High Sierra. In 2005, they also won first place at the SPBGMA Band Championship in Nashville and showcased at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual conference. In addition to scoring plum spots in newgrass ensemble John Cowan Band and Grammy winning Jim Lauderdale Bluegrass Band, he toured and performed with bluegrass legends Del McCoury, Tony Rice and JD Crowe as well as newgrass pioneers Sam Bush and Bela Fleck. John’s other newgrass influences are: Jerry Garcia, Paul Simon, Bill Monroe, Marty Raybon, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Little Feat, Paul Brady, The Bothy Band, and many other great artists from both the US and UK.In 2009, Frazier toured with film and comedy legend Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers. During the tour, Frazier, Martin, and the Rangers co-wrote the song “Go Away, Stop, Turn Around, Come Back,” that Martin recorded on, Rare Bird Alert.John has performed at venues all across the U.S. and overseas. These include the Grande Ole Opry, The Kennedy Center, Telluride Bluegrass Festival (four times), Merlefest, Bill Monroe Memorial Bluegrass Festival (Bean Blossom), Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, The Station Inn, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Royal Festival Hall in London. He has also appeared on “Later with Jools Holland” on the BBC, and nationwide in the US on manyl PBS broadcasts.John Frazier has further developed his freewheeling musical creativity with FrazierBand, a group he launched in 2010. The multi-talented singer/songwriter and mandolin, guitar and fiddle master spent a whirlwind two years and 125-dates on the road with acoustic and electric banjo players Matt Menefee and Kyle Tuttle and drummer James Kittleman. The group continues to solidify their inventive mix of rock and newgrass via the infectious hook driven pop tunes from FrazierBand, their critically acclaimed 2012 debut album. The Nashville Scene said, “Frazier’s compositions, which account for most of the album’s material, are nicely executed blends of jazz, string band music and more, and both the picking and the singing are top-shelf.”While showcasing John’s wide ranging skills as a vocalist and on mandolin, guitar and fiddle, the group’s new album Some People Change will also feature some of his most compelling original tunes ever. He has penned the spirited, “The Rod & The Cane” as a song of encouragement to a friend going through some intense life struggles, but it became a personal cathartic journey as well.John and the band are currently scheduling a number of video sessions to further promote this innovative album and build a greater audience for progressive bluegrass and newgrass. In an effort to further support this new musical genre, the band’s management is pursuing booking the Some People Change Tour into major cities as well as the college circuit. Part of the exciting promotional plan is for FrazierBand to participate in the 2016 South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. (Founded in 1986, SXSW® is the premier destination for discovery, offering the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies).Frazier brings to the new album a completely different mindset than he had when they recorded their debut. “This project builds on and solidifies what we started with, and truly congeals a full band sound.” FrazierBand has also created an exciting country groove shuffle behind a heartfelt strum through The Beatles’ White Album gem “Mother Nature’s Son.”“…I quickly realized I wanted a more unified ensemble sound, and two years of touring that album and recording a concert project really made that a reality. Matt and Kyle’s banjo solos and the strong bass and drum driven parts were as much a part of our success as my strings.”John is an avid soccer player and plays regularly in a top amateur league in Nashville. His most treasured moments are enjoying being with family and his two beautiful children.“awesome…one of the freshest sounds to come out of Nashville in some time.” -No Country For New Nashville“The Rod and The Cane” is the perfect song to crank up with the windows down, the pulsating mandolin overlaid with cool guitar tones.” -Broken Radio Magazine“Frazier’s compositions, which account for most of the album’s material, are nicely executed blends of jazz, string band music and more, and both the picking and the singing are top-shelf.” -The Nashville Scene“John has put forth a new level of thought in his work. FrazierBand’s music displays a fiery level of enthusiasm to present a core of groove graced by tasteful licks and pure original tone. Almost like a newgrass and root-based version of the Flecktones, this music is refined and honorably cool.” -Colorado Bluegrass Music Society“John Frazier, wow. I don’t think there is enough space here for me to accurately describe my fondness for John. Let’s just say that of the hundreds of folks I’ve encountered in a life of music, he is one of the most positive, thoughtful, intelligent, and gifted men I have had the pleasure to create with. By the way, the FrazierBand record is fabulous!” -John Cowan, The Voice of Newgrass“This is the best new music I have heard in Nashville in years.” – Billy Block“This music is BRILLIANT! Finally, something fresh in a bluegrass derivative.” -Pickin in the Pinesweb: http://www.frazierbandmusic.com/vid: https://youtu.be/zgcd3SbxgpU

Meeting at a local music venue called Peasant's Pub during open mic sessions, the band formed a relationship and started playing music together. Bryan and Matt formed the idea back in college playing with friends and had a barn that was called the "Silo" in the backyard of Bryan's college house where they held many parties. The first part of the name "Psylo" comes from the barn they started in, but spell it with a "P-s-y" to relate to the Psyches of the mind (Music moves our mind). "Joe" resembles that each person is just like you and I, average Joe's.Psylo Joe is an improvisational band who explores divergent areas of music such as funk, rock, acid jazz, blues, and traditional. The band consists of Bryan (guitar, vox), Matt (Bass) George (guitar, vox), Hunter (saxophone), and Tom (drums). The band has taken their artistry all across North Carolina, and have developed a loyal and congenial following. Psylo Joe provides an elevation of the mind and soul, and is surely one of the most welcoming bands around- Charlie ("Mr. Charlie") Powers The most striking quality of A Peasant's Life is the band's ability to capture the energy of a live show on the album. They're all very in sync with each other when it comes to both energy and rhythm. Each member is comfortable pushing and pulling on the beat in various places and they all seem to know where the other players will be. It's this type of intuitive playing that defines their own sound and makes them such a great live show to see. - Brian Swenk (Homegrown Music Network, Big Daddy Love)web: http://www.psylojoe.com/vid: https://youtu.be/enuF68DxZ3I

Description:
This April marks the 50th anniversary of the tragic assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., so for Lent this season, Trinity is joining with St. Matthias to let King’s prophetic voice ring again. On each Sunday, we will explore on of King’s sermons, delivered in worship and in churches, to allow his voice and spirit to speak directly to us again. Some scholars consider the Civil Rights Movement as much a religious revival movement as a political movement. And King’s sermons demonstrate this dynamic profoundly, revealing King as a faithful pastor, an engaging theologian, and a stirring prophet all at once. We will hear his voice in its context and then explore how his voice continues to speak to us today and our current context today, to challenge, to inspire, and to provoke us to be more faithful Christians. Held jointly in honor of Dr. King’s vision of beloved community, this series will be led by and hosted at St. Matthias for the first two weeks Feb. 18-25, concluding for the final weeks at Trinity March 4-March 25, from 9:30-10:15 a.m. St. Matthias is located a few short blocks from Trinity at 1 Dundee St. The series will run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. to give all attendees time to make it to worship at their respective parishes. Feb. 18th at St. Matthias: Bill Mance, diocesan chair of the Commission to Dismantle Racism, on “Paul’s Letter to American Christians,” a sermon delivered at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama, on Nov. 4, 1956. Chairman of commission to dismantle racism Feb. 25th at St. Matthias: Jean Parks, previous senior warden of St. Matthias and counselor with the Partnership for Pastoral Counseling, on “Loving Your Enemies,” a sermon delivered to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church on Nov. 17, 1957, March 4th at Trinity: Liz Colton, Trinity vestry member and board member of the Asheville Martin Luther King, Jr. Association, on “The American Dream” and “Unfulfilled Dreams,” sermons delivered at Ebenezer Baptist church in 1965 and 1968. March 11th at Trinity: The Rev. Margaret Faeth on “The Drum-Major Instinct,” delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Feb. 4, 1968. March 18th at Trinity: The Rev. Dennis Fotinos, facilitator of Trinity’s Becoming Beloved Community group, on “A Knock at Midnight,” delivered at Mt. Zion Baptist (Cincinnati) on June 11, 1967 March 25th at Trinity: The Rev. Dr. Scott White, with the Rev. Kirk Brown chaplain at Christ School, on “Reimagining Awake Through a Great Revolution,” delivered at Washington National Cathedral on March 31, 1968. Just a few days before his assassination, this marked King’s final Sunday sermon of his life. The Rev. Brown was in attendance that day.

Organic Growers School’s new series of Homestead Tours showcases how home-growers in Western North Carolina (WNC) are transforming their land into thriving, productive, and resilient ecosystems. Our goal is to inspire you to embark on your own homesteading journey by providing an opportunity to tour a working homestead. Tours occur once per month, each time at a different homestead, and they are always followed by an optional group potluck! Leon Birstein has been growing for over 20 years on Full Circle Family Farm. Located on 20 acres near Black Mountain, NC, the farmstead features high tunnels, extensive cover-cropping, large-scale composting systems, grey water ponds, and other non-intensive and creative methods. Leon also produces shitake mushrooms, baby ginger, turmeric, sweet potatoes, and brassicas for market sale, and his home and garden function entirely via off-grid power.
