Asheville Gallery of Art’s May show, “Light + Line,” features new work by Asheville watercolor artist Sandra Brugh Moore. The show runs May 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, May 5, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. The artist describes her show as combining three paths she likes to take in her work. “One is my studio work where I am exploring how to define light in the landscape. Another path is creating my small designs by adding curvilinear lines to unfinished watercolors. The third path is as a plein air painter,” Moore said. Well-known for her landscapes, Moore says, “These paintings are my response to fleeting moments of light—I reflect on a moment that reveals an energy I feel as light is leaving the sky.” Her mastery of watercolor technique is the hallmark of her work. “Watercolor is also a medium of constant change. I paint in layers, using the inherent transparency to depict the transitions between light and dark, sky and land, clouds and air.” As she continues to grow in her process, the artist states: “Painting, to me, is more and more about how I feel about the subject. It is less hand-eye coordination and more hand-spirit coordination.” Through the years Moore has won awards for her work and participated in juried shows. She teaches watercolor and drawing in the North Carolina Community College system and holds workshops in the Western North Carolina area. Her work can be seen at Asheville Gallery of Art and Trackside Studios in the River Arts District. Moore's work, as well as the work of the other 30 gallery members, will be on display and for sale through the month of May. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Description:

Flux Pavilion is a one man orchestra! With the ability to Sing and play a large variety of instruments it’s obvious that music comes naturally to him. Since first sitting down at a keyboard at the age of six his dream has been to make music that he loves and perform it to people who love it just as much.

Flux Pavilion AKA Joshua Steele has always been influenced by hard hitting dance music in everything that he does and it was only a matter of time before he found his own sound in the dance industry. in early 2008 Dubstep lit this internal fuse and he hasnt been the same man since.

Influenced by the likes of The Prodigy,Basement Jaxx and dubstep pioneer Rusko, Flux loved the high energy madness that dance music was capable of and set about making some of his own in the form of dubstep. Already adept with production skills he was soon off the starting block and his tunes were in swift circulation on the dubstep forum and were becoming a familiar name in the scene. What started of as a bit of experimentation soon became clear that Flux has definitely landed on his feet with the dubstep sound.
Before long labels were banging at his door itching to release his music sohe decided that the world was ready for a bit of Flux Pavilion! Signing tunes to Rottun, Shift, XS Records, Stupid Fly and Dubmented beats and working with artists such as Datsik and Trolley Snatcha, his tunes were dominating the charts and starting to receive alot more interest from the big boys.

Ntype featured his track ‘fucking noise’ on his rinse mix cd and not content with that then signed flux’s track ‘Meathead’ to his label wheel and deal. This was a massive look for flux and got his name out there to all the Dj’s: Rusko, Hatcha, Plastician, Caspa, Skream. Soon enough no club was safe from one of Flux’s bangers and the bookings came flying in all over the UK and Europe.

While his career flourished Flux and childhood Friend Doctor P had also been working on some stuff together. They teamed up with Legendary DJ and drum and bass pioneer DJ Swan-e and Earl Falconer of UB40 and formed the infamous Circus Records. With his own platform for dubstep Flux began to imprint the scene with his sound and was quickly becoming one of the main players in dancefloor dubstep family. His track Voscillate Received ‘Track of the Week’ on Rusko’s radio one takeover which even featured his own vocals and more to date his forthcoming single “I can’t Stop” has just received world record of the week by Radio 1’s Zane Lowe.

Well known for his high energy performances and smashing anthems Flux is now performing all over the globe, and further tours are confirmed for next year in  the U.S, Canada and Australia.

Description:

Tim Kasher, with his bands Cursive and The Good Life or as a solo artist, has continuously pushed musical boundaries over his career, which has produced 17 LPs and EPs over 20 years. His fearless attitude is easily evident: hes known for switching up sounds between his bands or his solo work (even switching up sounds on each projects albums), crafting intricate concept albums (two of which Cursives 2003 LP The Ugly Organ and 2012 LP I Am Gemini featured play-like stage directions), and transforming songs originally conceived as a soundtrack for his self-penned screenplay into a standalone album (The Good Lifes 2007 release Help Wanted Nights).Kashers forthcoming third solo album No Resolution (which will also be the first release from 15 Passenger, the new label founded and run by Cursive) is no exception, delivering what is arguably his most ambitious and intrepid work to date.No Resolution is the natural continuation of Tim Kashers constantly evolving body of work. It is his most cinematic creation, a moving and cathartic collection of soundscapes that feels more like a suite of movements than a standard pop album, complete with instrumental breaks conjoining the nine songs. Fittingly, the 15 pieces will be featured in Kashers directorial debut film of the same name, which he also wrote, to be released later this year. Across the albums strong story the characters an engaged couple on the brink of a break up grapple with the specific and the broad, including the restlessness of adulthood and smothering external pressures; relationships in various states of transition and the walls built within them; distrust, indecision, and despair; and the existential anxiety that drives a deep need to leave a mark on the world.Filled with lush arrangements, No Resolution is some of the most beautiful and finely orchestral music from Kasher, yet it is also his most subdued and understated work. The string arrangements that dominate the album dont simply hang in the background or accent the pretty melodies, they move the songs forward and force out the melodies as guitars do in traditional hard rock music. There is also a warm sophistication to No Resolution, with its fluid vibraphone tones, and also exhibits Kashers deft pop hand, with sudden horn blasts and dynamic shifts.Kasher recorded the album at The Hobby Shop (with Andrew mudrock Murdock) and at home in Los Angeles, CA, the Shape Shoppe in Chicago, IL (with Nick Broste), and at ARC Studios in Omaha, NE (with Ben Brodin), with additional arrangements by Patrick Newbery (Cursive, Oquoa) and percussion arrangements by Dylan Ryan (Sand, Rainbow Arabia).

Just across the street from the Omni Grove Park Inn lies a destination unlike any other: Grovewood Village, housed in the historic weaving and woodworking complex of Biltmore Industries - a groundbreaking enterprise in the history of American craft and textiles, with ties to George and Edith Vanderbilt, Edwin Wiley Grove, and Fred Loring Seely. Learn the story of Biltmore Industries on a guided history tour, offered Wednesday - Saturday at 1pm during April – December. The tour includes a visit to the historic Dye House in Grovewood Village (usually closed to the public), where the original looms, carding machines, mule spinners, and dye vats used to make Biltmore Handwoven Homespun can still be viewed. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and are geared towards adults. There is no charge to take the tour, but donations are appreciated. Spots are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Asheville Gallery of Art’s June show features the work of Bill Cole. His colorful shapes, lines, and angles of everyday objects exemplify how the ordinary becomes extraordinary through the eyes of an artist. The show runs June 1-30 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, June 2, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. Primarily a self-taught artist, Cole studied watercolor for a short period in Paris while living there in 1996. He has worked in watercolor, oil, acrylics, linocuts, and monotypes. His latest series of paintings are of buildings rendered in oil and acrylic, which he describes as, “leaning more toward minimalism than photographic realism.” In this series, he uses the lines and shapes of buildings as the format for exploring the interplay of shapes, colors, and textures. A native of Arden, NC, Cole began painting after retiring from the Air Force. His other interests include playing mandolin in a small band called Blackberry Jam and hiking. He lives in Waynesville with his wife, Jane, an active art quilter, and their Airedale, Ollie, an expert at catching and fetching turtles. Description:
Across the globe wood firers are connected by a shared experience of smoke and sweat. Although woodfiring is a relatively small discipline within the ceramic arts, the contemporary community is extremely close knit. What it lacks in numbers, it makes up for in the passion, commitment and enthusiasm of its practitioners. Fire is at the root of what it means to be human. Because woodfirers work with this ancient tool, they share a common language that transcends contemporary cultural barriers. The act of working wood and flame tap into something ancient every person shares. This exhibition brings together nineteen artists from five countries for a special exhibition to showcase the language of fire and clay. Like any language, each artist speaks with an individual accent, influenced by the region they work in and their own unique history, bringing depth and diversity to the conversation. Yet through this practice that upholds the intrinsic values of work, beauty and community, a common united voice arises. This exhibition is a platform for that global message. Exhibiting Artists: William Baker (USA) Akira Satake (USA) Josh Copus (USA) Michael Hunt (USA) Naomi Dalglish (USA) Eric Knoche (USA) Will Dickert (USA) Lindsay Oesterritter (USA) Ben Richardson (Australia) Jeff Shapiro (USA) Kazuya Ishida (Japan) Shozo Michikawa (Japan) Judith Duff (USA) Catherine White (USA) David Peters (USA) Sandy Lockwood (Australia) Robin Dupont(Canada) Hyangjong Oh (Korea) Tim Rowan (USA)

Description:
Author John Francis Trump signing his new book, STILL & BARREL: CRAFT SPIRITS IN THE OLD NORTH STATE. The event will also be a panel discussion about the state of craft distilling here in North Carolina, and the hardships and benefits of starting a craft distillery. Representatives from distilleries in the book will be present for the panel, along with some samples of their spirits. Although legal spirits in the Tar Heel state only go back about ten years, making liquor in North Carolina is not new. Wilkes County, which was once dubbed the “Moonshine Capital of the World,” was the leading producer of illegal liquor for decades. In 1965, Tom Wolfe’s article in Esquire—“The Last American Hero is Junior Johnson. Yes!”— made the area nationally famous. In Still & Barrel, Trump traces the history of manufacturing moonshine whiskey, gin, vodka, and rum in the state all the way to today’s boom from the artisan movement. The book also serves as a guide so you can visit the almost 50 distilleries that are now in business. The state’s distillers are not just making moonshine. Their wares include rum—from sorghum and molasses—aged red-wheat organic whiskey and vodka infused with the mysterious Tobago pepper. The information about the distillers and their products is surrounded by history and compelling stories about people and their passion.

Asheville studio potter Julie Calhoun-Roepnack will be at Gallery of the Mountains in Asheville from 1 – 5pm on Friday, June 2nd demonstrating surface design on clay using handmade stamps, sgraffito and carving tools. Watch Julie create various textures for her nature-inspired subjects that she illustrates on her signature line of pottery, the Blue Ridge Collection. Several mugs, bowls and vases will be on display and available for sale. Paying homage to the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th Century, Julie has designed a distinctive high-fire, lead-free, fully functional pottery collection inspired by the beauty and flora of Western North Carolina. Tall pines, stumpy shrubbery, rolling landscape and open sky are all individually hand-carved to create a balanced and soothing nature-scape on each piece; an image that is both familiar and indicative of the stunning scenery and terrain of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Since 1984, Gallery of the Mountains has featured American handmade crafts by more than 100 local and regional artists of the Southern Appalachians. The gallery is located inside The Omni Grove Park Inn (Sammons Wing).

The mountains of North Carolina harbor a rich history of woodfired ceramics that forms the foundation of the region’s vibrant contemporary practice. Western North Carolina is home to some of the field’s top artists and also to a number of valuable young voices that continue to push the field of woodfired ceramics in new directions. This exhibition speaks to the diversity and strength of woodfiring in our region by bringing together established and emerging makers alike to highlight the quality of what’s being made in the mountains today. As we survey the state of woodfiring in Western North Carolina, this exhibition clearly conveys that the future is a bright as our past.
