Flower Essences are energetic remedies that are one of Mother Nature’s many healing gifts to us. As our soul’s journey through this human experience, we encounter numerous challenges that require us to evolve through our self-sabotaging patterns, programs and beliefs. Flower essences assist us, in a loving and compassionate way, to move beyond our limitations and step into our soul’s greatness and beauty. Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues can be transformed through the subtle powers imbued within flowers. In this workshop we will explore the many aspects of Holistic Healing and flower essence therapy including: Dr. Edward Bach and the history of Flower Essences, understanding Bach’s 38 remedies, how to combine flower essences to make effective therapeutic remedies, working with chronic vs acute conditions, commonly used flower essences and combinations for Transformational Healing, the art of case taking and finding out the key symptoms, working with intuition, distinctions between Flower Essences and other forms of energy medicine and much more. There will also be live case taking with class volunteers. This course is for both lay people and healers who wish to add another powerful therapy to their practice.

Could you be the voice for an abused/neglected child in the court system? Volunteers needed in Buncombe County North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program 828-259-3443 or www.volunteerforgal.org for more info No experienced needed – all training and support provided Since January 1, 2017, 360 children have entered the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program – this means that 343 kids are alleged to have been abused/neglected and are in the court system. Of no fault of their own, these kids are typically removed from their home and placed and in foster care or a kinship placement. Why were they removed from the home? Maybe their parents abused substances, had untreated mental health, or engaged in domestic violence – maybe it was a combination of these factors. Either way, it’s the kids who pay the ultimate penalty as their lives are uprooted, they often change school districts and are taken away from everything they know. There are so many parties in a DSS abuse/neglect case: the judge, parents/caretakers, parent’s attorneys, DSS attorneys, GAL attorneys, investigative/in-home/foster care social workers…it’s easy to see how the kids get lost in the system. That’s where the role of the Guardian ad Litem comes in: to advocate and ensure the voice of the child is heard in court, that their wishes for permanency and best interest are made known to all parties. With so many kids in the GAL program, our office is overwhelmed with cases, and we have a critical need for volunteers to represent children’s best interests in court. There is no experience necessary and we provide all training and support. Being a GAL is a challenging and demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding as you literally ensure the child’s voice is heard in court throughout the life of the case. Our next training begins mid-January – visit www.volunteerforgal.org to complete a volunteer application, or call the office at 828-259-3443 for more information. Could you be the voice for a child?

The NCOBS Collier Lilly Ride is an annual ride to benefit the North Carolina Outward Bound School in honor of Collier Lilly, a rising junior at Davidson College when he was killed in an automobile accident in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he was employed for the summer. Collier completed an NC Outward Bound course as a recent high school graduate in 1985. The experience ignited in him a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a passion for outdoor adventure. NCOBS challenged Collier in unexpected ways, inspiring him to reach for bigger goal than he had ever imagined. In memory of Collier, the proceeds from the Collier Lilly Ride for NC Outward Bound School will be given to North Carolina Outward Bound School. Since 1967, North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) has delivered challenging wilderness adventures that teach more than just outdoor skills. Upholding the same ideals and goals as the first Outward Bound School established in 1941 in Britain, every NCOBS course is built around a progression that delivers powerful life lessons by encouraging participants to safely and confidently step outside their comfort zones and travel in spectacular wilderness areas.

Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s May show, “Chasing the Light,” will feature the work of Joyce Schlapkohl who describes her style as, “painterly realism with a strong focal point.” The show runs May 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, May 4, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. When the artist moved from Florida to her native North Carolina 19 years ago, she was a watercolor painter and teacher who was then known for her boats, seascapes, and florals. However, she switched to oils almost immediately to capture the local landscape, flowers, animals, and any subject that inspired her with strong light and shadow patterns. “While watercolor training still influences the way I see values, oils add freedom for creating texture and layering paint.” Her formal art training began after earning a Master’s Degree in Business. When a back injury sidelined her, she studied art at Florida Atlantic University and has continued taking workshops with nationally known teachers. “A wonderful part of painting is that you never stop learning and developing your eye for seeing regardless of the medium you use. I’m very fortunate to be able to paint full time. I’m very thankful that I love what I do and can share life’s beauty as I see it. Hopefully the local scenes will stir emotion for the viewer as they have inspired me.” The artist’s studio is in Waynesville, NC. You can find Joyce’s work at Asheville Gallery of Art, Seven Sisters Gallery in Black Mountain, and Twigs and Leaves Gallery in Waynesville. She is a Signature Member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. Her website is www.joycepaints.com and her e-mail is [email protected] Schlapkohl’s work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of May. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Our next Super Saturday Wine Tasting will feature a bevy of Sensational Spring Wines. The cool cats from Sour Grapes join us to pour you the wines and tell you the stories. Just $5 to try 9 fantastic whites and dry roses. Free for Grape Nuts! Yep, you read that right. We’re doing all whites and dry roses at our next Super Saturday Wine Tasting. And every single one of the wines comes from a small, family-run estate. With spring in full bloom and summer just around the corner, this is your chance to taste, learn, save, and stock up on some of the best warm-weather wines we can find. Trust me folks, this will be one of the best wine tastings to go down in Asheville all spring and summer. Don’t miss it! All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day. 1. 2017 Chateau de la Selve Maguelonne Rose (Coteaux de l’Ardeche, France) – Talk about a wine to get the juices flowing! Chateau de la Selve is a small, certified organic/biodynamic estate, and their dry rose is fabulous. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah, it’s spring in a glass. 2. 2017 Domaine des Diables “Le Petit Diable” (Provence, France) – This heavenly, Provencal rose is in fine form again this year. 60% Syrah, with the balance in Cinsault and Grenache, it’s fresh, dry, and super aromatic. Look for notes of red fruits, summer peach, and green herbs. 3. 2016 Domaine de Bel Air Pouilly Fume (Loire Valley, France) – Pouilly Fumes are getting harder and harder to find………and pricier! After much hunting and tasting, I found the perfect one. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, this one snaps, crackles, and pops with crisp, steely citrus and chalky, flinty minerality. YUM! 4. 2017 Domaine du Pas St. Martin Saumur Blanc “La Pierre Frite” (Loire Valley, France) – This 100% Chenin Blanc-based wine comes from old, certified organic vineyards in France’s Loire Valley. Bone-dry, yet beautifully rich and textured, the zesty acidity keeps you coming back for sip after sip. 5. 2016 Chateau de la Selve Viognier “Saint Regis” (Coteaux de l’Ardeche, France) – De la Selve’s Viognier is beautiful and balanced in this vintage. Lighter and fresher than most Viogniers, it still possesses those lovely aromatics. Honeysuckle, rose petal, spice, and peach jump out of the glass here. 6. 2016 Pullus Halozan (Stajerska, Slovenia) – You might remember this one as “the most dangerous white wine on the planet” from last summer. It still holds that title! Why? Because it’s a liter of white wine deliciousness. A blend of 8 different aromatic whites, it’s fresh, it smells like heaven, and it tastes even better. Just drink it! 7. 2017 Pullus Pinot Grigio Rose (Stajerska, Slovenia) – Like their Halozan, Pullus’s Pinot Grigio is dangerously drinkable. For this one, they leave the juice and skin together for a bit, and the resulting wine is slightly pink and a lot more intense than your average Pinot Grigio. Bold notes of melon, creamy peach, herbs, and more! 8. Domaine des Diables “BonBon” Rose (Provence, France) – This, my friends, is one of the most intense, aromatic, and delicious roses in the house. From extremely old vines planted in 1914, this blend of Cinsault, Syrah, and Grenache screams out of the glass with notes of raspberry, pink grapefruit, citrus zest, and more. 9. La Collina Lunaris Secco (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) – We’ll end with something fun and super refreshing. It’s 100% Malvasia and it’s somewhere in between an orange wine, a Pet Nat, and a Loire Valley Chenin Blanc with amazing cider-like notes and a purity and cleanliness that cannot be topped.

The Lost Chord is an Asheville-based Moody Blues tribute band that was formed in 2016. Their goal is to reproduce the classic, cosmic sound of the legendary bands original studio recordings in a live setting. The focus of their repertoire is on the seven albums of the Moodies classic period, spanning from Days of Future Passed to Seventh Sojourn. They cover most of the well known hits as well as some of the more obscure gems from that era.The band features founding member, Garry Byrne, on keyboard sounds, which includes digital samples of Mike Pinders Mellotron, an instrument that was a major characteristic part of The Moody Blues sound. On lead vocals, backing vocals and electric bass is Sherman Hoover, who also performs with The Billy Jonas Band and has been playing at Jubilee services for many years. Todd Byington also sings lead vocals and backing vocals while strumming or picking the acoustic guitar. Doubling on acoustic guitar and backing vocals and rocking out on the lead guitar parts is Paul Quick of the local duo, QuickChester. James Wilson plays the drums on an electronic drum kit, which allows him to program sounds that match the original drummers palette. Kate Barber alternates between playing the flute and percussion and joins in on backing vocals.

You learn to trust your gut, you learn to trust your ear, and most of all, you learn to trust your company. Fortunately for us, here in 2017 Mr. Finley has all three in spades. The singer lives in the tiny, forgotten town of Bernice, Louisiana, right near the Arkansas line, but in his younger days his music took him all over the world. Joining the Army as a teenager, Finley was sent to Europe as a helicopter technician but found more appealing work as the leader of the Army band, and toured the continent many times over on guitar and vocals. Following his rambling military service, he learned the trade of carpentry and settled back home in the States. He leaned on his gospel and blues songs for a hobby rather than career, and mostly confined his artistry to the streets of the South. But now, in the true spirit of the American Dream, Finley’s music is once again primed to reach doors and shores at home and abroad, as his new LP Goin’ Platinum! is set to be released through Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound this fall.

Tickets on sale Thursday, 3/29/18THE FRITZ PRESENTS:The King of Pop Meets The Purple OneThe Fritz plays the music of Michael Jackson and PrinceThe FritzThe Fritz is a soul-driven dance rock band hailing from Asheville, NC. The group’s aggressive approach to funk, soul, and rock creates a sound that is uniquely their own. Their high-energy, danceable songs provide a platform for each member to shine. With powerful vocals, climactic solos, and tight grooves, The Fritz has built a devoted following and is captivating audiences everywhere.Originally formed in the rehearsal spaces of University of North Florida's School of Music, The Fritz discovered an immediate chemistry. Drawing on influences such as Prince, Talking Heads and Jimi Hendrix, the quintet integrated their diverse musical tastes and began writing music together. With their college days behind them, the Fritz soon set their eyes on the mountains of Western North Carolina, eventually settling in Asheville in July 2011. After the release of their 2012 debut album, Bootstrap, the band launched into a near-constant touring schedule. With appearances at festivals such as Hulaween, Wakarusa, and Catskill Chill, the band quickly gained a reputation as a live act not to be missed. The band’s 2017 release, Natural Mind, captures a sound that has been years in the making. “We intentionally waited to go back into the studio so that we could really work on the music and figure out what makes this band special,” vocalist and keyboardist Jamar Woods said. For the new album, The Fritz headed north to More Sound Studios in Syracuse, NY and enlisted the help of producer Dave Brandwein (Turkuaz, Galaxy Smith Studios) and engineers Jason "Jocko" Randall and Jose Varona to assist with the recording process.“We wanted to work with a producer whose work we respected and who we trusted to add a different perspective,” percussionist Mikey “Spice” Evans said. “Dave played an invaluable role in producing our album.”While most of the songs were written in the months leading up to recording, the studio environment allowed for some last minute additions and musical breakthroughs.“We really wanted to arrange these songs specifically for the studio, which was both challenging and fun for us” guitarist Jamie Hendrickson said. “Now we’re very excited to get on the road and have these songs take on a life of their own.”The band is now taking the album and their unforgettable live performances around the country with the Natural Mind tour. Check out www.thefritzmusic.com for local tour dates near you.

Genre: Radiohead TributeTickets: adv. $10 / dos. $12Show: 9PM (Doors: 8PM)Ages: 21+ Off With Your Radiohead Ever since he first heard "Creep" on FM radio as a teenager, Jeff Thompson has been crazy about Radiohead. "The Bends" and "OK Computer" got so much play on his Panasonic boombox in the 90s that the poor machine forgot how to play CDs by other bands.  Jeff screamed along with "Paranoid Android" in his college dorm room so many times and so loudly that a psychiatric intervention became necessary.  "You are not Thom Yorke, Jeff," the doctor repeated to him over and over as he flung himself around his padded cell.  But Jeff ignored the doctor and called him a "Gucci LIttle Piggy."  He was eventually released, not because he got better, but because the nurses grew exhausted from hearing one too many versions of "Fake Plastic Trees" crooned at them. So, getting to sorta pretend to be Thom Yorke on stage is not only the fulfillment of a decades long fantasy (delusion) for Jeff, but it's also a form of therapy for him. Radiohead is, in Jeff's opinion, one of the most brilliant, inspirational, and musically innovative bands in the history of rock.  Pushing the boundaries of convention rhythmically, melodically, harmonically, lyrically, thematically, and all other words that end with "cally," they've also been fearless pioneers and risk takers in the realms of business and progressive ethics.  In short, they do it all, and do it in ways that have never been done before. Getting to pay tribute to them through the project Jeff calls "Off with your Radiohead" is a high honor for Jeff, and one in which he takes great pride.  It is with immense pleasure that he performs the songs of Radiohead to the best of his ability with an assemblage of some of the finest musicians in Western North Carolina---including Aaron Price, Josh and Jake Cavinder, Josh Blake, and Mattick Frick. It seems unlikely that Jeff will ever actually get to BE Thom Yorke, but don't tell him that, and come check out an Off With Your Radiohead show. See if he and his bandmates come anywhere near close to pulling it off. We think you'll be pretty pleased. web: https://www.jeffthompsonmusic.com/off-with-your-radioheadvid: https://youtu.be/Tpifk1pv8iY
