Jesse Barry, known for her soulful blues pipes and contagious enthusiasm on stage, began her music career at the tender age of eight years old. Influenced by Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Etta James, Jesse has created her own, unique blues sound. She is often described as an "old soul" and audiences are stunned by the huge voice that comes out of her small body. Popularly known as "Skinny Legs" from Skinny Legs and All, a band she created as a teenager, Jesse has placed in the Mountain Xpress "Best Of" blues band category three years in a row, and has performed at B.B. King's Club for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, and at the Springing the Blues Festival in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Jesse competed on the popular TV show "American Idol" in season 9 and has made a lasting impact on her hometown, Asheville, North Carolina. She has recorded 3 albums with Skinny Legs and All and is currently working with her new blues, funk, and soul group Jesse Barry and The Jam, A Social Function, and What It Is. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, bassist Daniel Iannucci has been living and performing in Western North Carolina for the past 10 years. After receiving his Bachelor of Music from Western Carolina University, where he studied with Asheville bassist Eliot Wadopian, in Spring of 2010, he relocated to Asheville, North Carolina and is currently pursuing a career in music. He has performed with many of the regional symphonies, the Flat Rock Playhouse, and is currently involved in several local jazz, blues and fusion projects, including Jesse Barry and The Jam. As a duo, Jesse and Daniel create soulful sounds with a mix of blues and jazz standards, funky dance tunes, and beautiful ballads.

As much as they take their funk seriously, the band takes it’s rock-honed songwriting just as seriously, but the well crafted song is not the only final product in the live forum. Individually, the members of The Fritz are masters of improvisation, carefully weaving their personality into each performance. While the music may range from hard driving soul to progressive rock, a common thread of The Fritz’s passionate energy reigns true in each show. Whether live or in the studio, the band creates an energetic dance party every time. Their 2013 release, Bootstrap, released positive acclaim around the region. The Fritz brought several unforgettable performances to festivals all over the East Coast. As 2016 rounds to a close, the boys are preparing to enter the studio to record a new album with the help of Dave Brandwein (Turkuaz, The London Souls, Zongo Junction). The Fritz looks forward to a great year in 2017, as they continue to spread the good Fritz gospel of intoxicating live music. Vid: https://youtu.be/bdPL9hcco0YWeb: http://www.thefritzmusic.com/LITZLITZ brings together a wide array of musical influences ranging from funk, jam, go-go, soul, electronica and just about everywhere inbetween to amalgamate a new sound for the ears of the world. Michal Menert returns to New Mountain AVL with Cobrayama for the Music and Art Tour 2017. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 10 at 11am EST. Michal Menert is an electronic music artist and producer based in Denver, Colorado. Throughout his youth, his father exposed him to a wide variety of Eastern and Western music, giving Menert fertile soil in which to plant his musical visions. His passion for original analog sounds coupled with a vast knowledge of music history has given him an even larger platform from which to produce. A multi-instrumentalist, he incorporates live guitar and keys into his final production for a full sound and rich feel. By tapping into the world of music that surrounds him, Menert twists and turns day-to-day inspirations into music that is all his own. Menert worked as the co-producer with Derek Vincent Smith on the chart topping Pretty Lights album Taking Up Your Precious Time, and was a natural choice to be the first artist to join Pretty Lights Music in 2010 with the release of his solo album, Dreaming of a Bigger Life. Michal’s second album with PLM, the critically acclaimed mega-LP Even If It Isn’t Right, dropped in the spring of 2012. Within just a few short months, Menert was landing headlining slots at some of the most prestigious venues in the country. His musical collaborations have brought him a wealth of inspiration, and led to the formation of a number of ongoing side projects including Half Color (with Paul Basic), Manic Menert (with Manic Focus), and a slew of others. 2014 saw the culmination of a musical dream with the debut of the Michal Menert Big Band – an 18-piece ensemble led by Michal that performed his catalog in front of thousands, including headlining performances at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium and direct support at Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre. A dynamic and ideological producer, Menert has always taken a community driven approach. He works hand in hand with producers he chooses for his own record label, Super Best Records. By collaborating and working closely with a new generation of hip-hop & EDM producers, he’s bringing a new musical vision to life without any imposed limitations. The Spring of 2015 saw the release of Michal’s third LP, Space Jazz on Super Best Records, to an extraordinary response from fans and press. That fall, Menert released the first LP, “1” with his live indie-soul band Michal Menert & the Pretty Fantastics. His sound combines vintage vinyl samples with rich analog synthesis and organic, hard-hitting beats. It’s a fusion of yesterday’s elements and tomorrow’s ideas. Catch him on tour throughout 2015 and beyond.

Time Sawyer is interested in “real people and real songs” and that’s just what the listener finds in their music – a sense of realness. Time Sawyer blends a grassroots feel with heart-felt lyrics to put on an entertaining show. From introspective ballads to high-energy crowd-pleasers, Time Sawyer’s songs land in that rootsy sweet spot where folk, alt-country, and rock gather for a good time. The folk rock band’s name reflects the pull between the past and the future. The character Tom Sawyer evokes the rural background and love of home that lead vocalist/guitarist Sam Tayloe and vocalist/banjo player Houston Norris, share. Time is a muse for songwriting; it’s the thread that runs through life, bringing new experiences and giving us a sense of urgency, while still connecting us with our past. Time Sawyer has performed on the stages of some of the Southeast’s most iconic festivals, including Merlefest, Floydfest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Rhythm n’ Blooms, Carolina in the Fall and IBMA’s Bluegrass First Class. They’ve shared bills with Langhorne Slim, Phil Cook, Steep Canyon Rangers, The Wood Brothers, Joe Pug, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, and many more. The band’s original members, including guitarist Kurt Layell and drummer Clay Stirewalt, along with Tayloe and Norris, started performing and recording together while they were all students at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. They went on to record five albums together, each demonstrating growth, with more skillful instrumentation and more sophisticated arrangement, all while retaining the honesty and directness that has been a hallmark of their music from the start. Today Time Sawyer is Sam Tayloe and Houston Norris, who are joined by some of the region’s most talented instrumentalists, allowing the band the flexibility to perform as an acoustic duo, a six-piece band, or anything in between. The memorable lyrics and strong melodies result in songs that will stay in your head long after the music stops. Time Sawyer continues to develop a loyal and growing fan base. Whether they’re playing in an intimate listening room or a large outdoor festival, their goal is to forge a face-to-face connection with the audience so that they become friends who happen to be fans.

Description:
We are excited to announce that the City of Asheville will be participating in a year-long Rise Up and Read Together program beginning with volume 1 of the March trilogy. For one year, everyone in Asheville is invited to read the same book. To kick-off this city-wide event we will have one of its co-authors Andrew Aydin reading with us on March 26th. We anticipate quite a crowd and have therefore created a FREE ticket so as to manage the numbers at the event. The books will be on sale at the event and volume one is 10 percent off for the duration of the Rise Up and Read Together program. Please support your local economy by purchasing your book from us. Below is a bit more about the book and Andrew Aydin: Almost sixty years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. edited a 16-page comic book about the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Distributed by hand in churches, schools, and nonviolence workshops, it dramatized the fledgling movement and its tactics to a generation of future leaders including a young John Lewis. Today, Lewis is continuing that legacy, and using comics to educate and inspire a new generation. Together with Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, Congressman Lewis is creating a transformative work of literature in the graphic novel series March: a #1 New York Times bestseller that brings his memories of the civil rights movement to urgent new life. As a graphic novel memoir, March engages readers with unforgettable imagery and first-person narration, combining the disciplines of art, literature, and history in a single document. Students will not only understand the history of the civil rights movement but also connect in a deeply personal way with the story of nonviolent activism in America. March is also a catalyst for vital discussions about diversity, society, and active engagement in one's community, in ways that are not just historical but directly relevant to today's world. And what's more, it focuses specifically on the role of young people. Andrew Aydin, an Atlanta native, grew up reading and collecting comic books. After college, upon taking a job with Congressman Lewis, Andrew learned that the civil rights legend had been inspired as a young man by a classic 1950s comic book, Martin Luther King & The Montgomery Story. They discussed the impact that comic books can have on young readers and decided to write a graphic novel together about the civil rights era. A few years later, the March series was born. Today, Andrew serves as Digital Director & Policy Adviser to Congressman Lewis in Washington, D.C. While studying at Georgetown University in Washington, Andrew wrote his masters thesis on the history and impact of Martin Luther King & The Montgomery Story. As March has grown into a bona fide phenomenon, Andrew continues to publish and lecture about the history of comics in the civil rights movement including at the headquarters of Google and Apple, where CEO Tim Cook called March, "a very unique way to present what is probably the most important story of my entire lifetime. My hope is that everyone reads this, and I would love to see the day that it is required reading in every school."

He began formal studies on piano at the age of 7 and at 11 taught himself guitar. Influenced in those early days by the folk revival blooming in Britain, France and North America, Bensusan began first to explore his own diverse musical heritage and then moved to the horizons beyond. At 17 he signed his first recording contract, and one year later his first album Pres de Paris won the Grand Prix du Disque upon his debut at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland. Described by the L.A. Times as "one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today", Pierre Bensusan was voted "Best World Music Guitar Player in 2008" by Guitar Player Magazine Readers Choice. His name became synonymous with contemporary acoustic guitar genius, long before the terms New Age, New Acoustic Music or World Music were invented. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique. There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His "manner" of playing defies classification - crossing world, classical, jazz, traditional, folk and more. None can be isolated as simply “Brazilian”, "Arabic" or “French”; rather, they represent our world in its current state, a world sharing itself, fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced. Not to be missed!

"When words are not enough, music goes deep into the soul and can transform a seemingly hopeless situation, says Cecilia St. King international musician. Concert for Peace & Justice with Cecilia St. King, accompanied by Jay Whitham. Poetry by Majo Madden Jubilee! Community 46 Wall St, Asheville, NC 28801 Sunday: March 26th - 7:00 pm www.CeciliaStKing.com Ticket charge: Suggested donation $10.00 in advance, $12.00 at the door. All proceeds above the cost will go to support social justice actions through Jubilee! and faith communities in western North Carolina. Cecilia St. King is an Inner Peace Troubadour who has dedicated her life to healing our planet through the power of music. Over her 25-year career, she has performed worldwide. After running from the falling towers of the World Trade Center and discovering cancer in her throat 6 months later, her focus turned to PEACE. Touring throughout the United States for the past 16 years, she has sung in places as diverse as San Quentin prison to the Parliament of the Worlds Religions. Her work has been endorsed by the United Nations, the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and the National Peace Academy. Translating spirituality into song, she blends American roots music, merging rock, blues, folk, spirituals and a hint of jazz. Her music is positive, contemporary, non-denominational and offers a powerful antidote to turmoil in our current times. Audiences are encouraged to participate, singing a joyous note, they will laugh and might cry, but most assuredly they are left feeling a sense of hope that, no doubt, leaves them wanting more. Jay Whitham, local singer-songwriter and musician, will accompany St. King. Local Asheville poet, writer, speaker (and grocery store cashier) Majo Madden, will be offering his poetry during the performance. Personal, psychological and accessible, his poetry is for people who dont like poetry. His poem for this concert addresses his primary current fixation - how to do social activism from a peaceful, loving place. He will be accompanied by Robert Thomas on piano and three contact improv dancers: Amanda Levesque, Giovanna Allegretti and Tom Kilby.
