Description:
Presented by: The Collider and Oskar Blues Brewery It’s a natural history epic. It’s a compelling detective story. It’s a scientific adventure at its best. It took Dr. Fred Urquhart almost 40 years to discover the monarch butterflies’ secret hideaway and prove the most incredible migration on Earth. Following the year-long annual migration cycle of the butterflies, the award-winning production team filmed hundreds of millions of monarchs in their remote overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico in 2011, again in 2012, and also along their migratory routes from Canada, across the U.S. and into Mexico. The movie will be followed by a facilitated conversation with Environmental Educator, Kim Bailey. Kim first visited the monarch overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico in 2002 and has since co-led several trips to the area. After 14 years coordinating a statewide environmental education program for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, she fulfilled her longtime dream of launching Milkweed Meadows Farm in Fruitland, NC. She now enjoys growing milkweed, wildflowers, fruits, and vegetables; producing open-pollinated seeds for Sow True Seed; keeping bees and raising butterflies. Kim also works for the Captain Planet Foundation as their Curriculum Editor. Audience: All ages Cost: Free! Location: 1 Haywood St, Asheville, NC, 28801 Doors open at 6:30

Description:

Cindy Wilsons current endeavor is as far from The B-52s as one can possibly imagine. Rather than shouting from the rooftops in "The Worlds Greatest Party Band", Wilson swoons and whispers over swirls of subtle psychedelia, Quincy Jones-era strings, and pulsing synths. With echoes of Air, Bjork, Tame Impala, and Gary Numan, the band refers to its infectious brand of new wave electro-pop as "Turbo Chill, a sonic synopsis offered by the hosts of Adult Swims Stupid Morning Bullshit following the release of Wilsons solo debut EP, Sunrise. Two years in the making, Change offers a challenge to fans of the iconic B-52s, while cultivating a new generation of listeners. After four decades on the road internationally with The B-52s, Change represents a full circle for Wilson. Tapping into her own local stock in order to start anew, Cindy returned to the same town that nurtured her own creative roots: Athens, Georgia. Change features a native cast of Athenian musicians including Ryan Monahan (Easter Island, Monahan), producer/engineer Suny Lyons (PacificUV, Dream Boat), Lemuel Hayes (Ola Moon, PacificUV), and Marie Davon (powerkompany). Its very different from a B-52s show, Wilson recently told PopMatters. I get to play around with different ideas and beautiful melodies. I dont have to yell in a rock voice. I think you can get an emotional depth in the types of rooms were playing that you cant find in larger rooms.

Description:
Beats Antique bring their unique + eclectic electronic experience to the New Mountain Amphitheater on Friday, June 30th. Stay tuned for a very special afterparty announcement!!! • More about Beats Antique • Celebrating its tenth anniversary with its tenth studio release, the Bay Area’s wildly innovative performance dynamo Beats Antique emerges from the studio with a brand new album and stage show to mark the milestone. With legendary sets at some of the most iconic venues and festivals around the world and collaborations with superstars from Les Claypool to Bassnectar, the next chapter in the trio’s story takes them back to a mysterious world. When multi-instrumentalists David Satori and Tommy Cappel and choreographer Zoe Jakes dove into development of the new Beats Antique era, the concept of Shadowbox emerged. Driven by the infinite wonders of the deceptively simple design, the narrative of shadows and light, of darkness and contrast, of reality and surreality propelled the music and vision into new territory. Capturing the heart of the Beats Antique sound means skirting that divide between the electric and the acoustic. Balkan melodies strung over crashing cymbals and marching band horn lines run smack into contemporary electronic grooves. It might be the drums and brass or the sweeping psychedelic strings that will take you for a ride down the rails of a steampunk circus. It’s chaos and cacophony on a very tight leash. All three members shared production duties to harness the sound they first stumbled upon a decade ago: far east meets wild west. Bringing in sarod master Alam Khan (son of Ali Akbar Khan) Jakes was able to take her study of Indian classical dance from the stage to the studio. Russian singer Tatiana Kalmykova resurrected an ancient folk language to evoke a haunting fairy tale that feels at home in the shadows. Beats Antique also recruited rising stars of brass house TOO MANY ZOOZ for the horn-fueled funk and punk central to their sound. As always, Tommy Cappel focused his efforts on the beats and bass production, while David Satori assembled an armory of stringed, plucked, and bowed instruments from far-flung lands to adorn the low-end foundation. All samples were created live in the studio—a hallmark of the lush warmth of a Beats Antique record. The Shadowbox stage show will be teased at Red Rocks and Electric Forest before its full unveiling this fall. Taking the theme of shadow play and expanding the concept forward and backward in time, the core members dove deep, influenced by ancient practices of Indonesian shadow puppetry, falling into the world of wayang kulit, the eons long tradition of storytelling where epic tales unfold into the wee hours of the morning. Enormous lanterns adorn the stage, casting light upon a maze of curtains where playful new characters dance and fight and rejoice and mourn. Beats Antique is breaking the boundaries of conventional wisdom. Why can’t an electronic music performance encompass a range of emotion? This isn’t a nuclear-powered laser light show from the ever-intensifying optical arms race of the EDM industry. This is one of the earliest methods of storytelling brought from the past into the present. “The digital is there to enhance the analog,” notes Jakes. “We’re here to tell a story,” Satori adds. Bringing an album from the shadows of the studio to the brightly lit stage is what Beats Antique does best. These are storytellers for a digital age—equipped with the newest technology and ancient traditions. This is where the Beats meet the Antique.

Genre: Funk/Rock/ReggaeCover: Donation$Show: 9:30PM (9PM Doors)Ages: 21+ The Get Right Band THE GET RIGHT BAND is “hip-shaking, earthquaking pure funk fun” (The Alternate Root). They are one of Relix Magazine’s “On The Verge” picks, Home Grown Music Network’s 2015 “Best New Band of the Year,” and were voted “Best Progressive Band” in Western North Carolina by Mountain Xpress readers. They have performed on the famed World Cafe, a nationally syndicated NPR show, and have brought their unique sound to major festivals and venues such as FloydFest, The Orange Peel, Music City Roots TV Show, The Green Parrot, Arlene’s Grocery, and Riverbend Fest. Combining catchy, clever, honest songwriting with musical expertise and fearless improvisation, the live show promises to move your head, heart, and hips. “An ass shaking good time.”-Relix Magazine The band is built on the musical brotherhood that guitarist/vocalist Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school. Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, possesses guitar chops that can soothe or rage and a charismatic swagger as a frontman and a singer. “Durocher has an impressive range and rich clarity to his vocals—think a more soulful Dan Auerbach” (Connect Savannah). Gentry’s virtuosic bass playing “catapults from elastic to nasty” (The Mountain Xpress). With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, a drummer with “precision, passion, and an inescapable momentum” (Live For Live Music), the group’s sound has become an unstoppable force. They have been wowing audiences around the country and the Caribbean since their inception in 2011 with an unparalleled live show and a relentless tour schedule. “I love this song!”-Marc Maron, of WTF podcast On August 5, 2016, The Get Right Band released their third studio album, Who’s in Charge? The record was made at Asheville’s legendary Echo Mountain Studios (Widespread Panic, Zac Brown Band, Smashing Pumpkins), engineered, mixed, and co-produced by Julian Dreyer (The Avett Brothers, Dawes, Band of Horses), and mastered by six-time Grammy winner Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Grace Potter, Dr. John, Beck). The album has received praise and support from such giants as The Huffington Post, NPR, Relix, WTF with Marc Maron, Live For Live Music, PopWrapped, and dozens of radio stations around the country. While seamlessly blending a number of different genres, the CD is held together by The Get Right Band’s honest songwriting, fierce playing, and strong self-identity. The powerful songs and the pop/rock/psychedelic approach to production puts the album in the realm of acts like My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, and The Black Keys (with hints of Sublime and early Chili Peppers). “Tight and diverse jams and a distinctive, intellectual but accessible worldview.”-Live For Live Music The Get Right Band has had the honor of playing shows with national acts such as Galactic, Rusted Root, Victor Wooten Band, Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull), Turkuaz, Mike Dillon Band, Jeff Sipe Trio, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Jeff Coffin’s Mutet, Larry Keel, and Bobby Lee Rodgers. web: http://thegetrightband.com/ vid: https://youtu.be/5RbzFr3swGc Marbin Marbin is a progressive jazz-rock band based in Chicago, IL, with a unique story that stands out in today's music world. Let Go of Self Criticism & Guilt: Half-Day Meditation Course Saturday July 1, 10am – 1pm 1070 Tunnel Road, Building 2, Unit 20 (Behind Pomodoro’s), $20 or $15 Students/Seniors. Discounts for Monthly Members Guilt can be very painful and even destructive. With guilt, we can find ourselves frequently reliving painful memories of the past which then negatively impacts how we live today. It is very common for us to be our own harshest judge and give ourselves a hard time over mistakes we have made. When we develop guilt, we are identifying ourself as a bad or worthless person and this not only causes us a lot of pain but keeps us stuck in the same kind of behavior patterns. On this course we will explore how we can separate ‘ourself’ from any undesirable behavior we may have, let go of guilt and set ourselves free to really live a much healthier and happier life. We will learn that the peace that comes with self-acceptance enables us to truly change. Everyone Welcome. To Register or for more information: go to link below

Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s July show features the work of Cheryl Keefer whose signature impressionist style interprets moody landscapes as well as urban scenes. The show runs July 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, July 7, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. The artist enjoys oil painting en plein air, whether on a mountainside or along a marsh. She is often inspired to listen to that still small voice that speaks to her, sometimes quietly, filling her with awe and gratitude, and moving her to create. Simple ideas become visual expressions of her personal epiphanies: morning light glistening on a wooded stream, a sunset punctuating a cloudy sky, fresh spring blossoms highlighting an otherwise gray day, a red umbrella piercing through the rain. In a loud world full of so many inconsistencies, Keefer says she finds wonder and joy in the rhythmic cycles of life on earth, celebrating all seasons in all kinds of weather and times of day. Each composition reflects her endeavor to rejoice everyday, and her hope in the wondrousness of creation. "Momentous occasions of life are few and far between so I want the viewer to see cause for celebration, even in the rain." The artist holds degrees in art history and art education from The University of Alabama, Birmingham, and graduate painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. She enjoys working and visiting with clients and friends in her studio, NorthLight, in Asheville’s River Arts District. Keefer’s work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of July. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Find your one and only dog at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Brother Wolf will host its first single dog speed dating event on Saturday, July 1, from 6-8 p.m. at its Adoption Center located at 31 Glendale Avenue in Asheville. Dogs participating in this event prefer to be the only animal in a home, and are seeking a family that wishes to give all their love and affection to just one perfect pet. Potential adopters seeking a match will meet with a Brother Wolf Adoption Counselor, and answer questions about what they are looking for in a companion. They will then be matched with three dogs for a 15-minute “blind date” on campus scheduled at specific times. Dates will involve treats, snuggling and playing with toys. Between dates, guests will be welcome to enjoy family-friendly games and mingle with members of the community. This event will be free and open to the public.

The Arkansas native has earned wide respect as the top-tier penman behind #1 Billboard hits for George Strait (“River of Love”), Josh Turner (“Would You Go With Me”) and Brooks and Dunn (“How Long Gone”), in addition to the Brooks smash “Two Pina Coladas.” Camp frequently splits pages with legendary tunesmiths like Guy Clark (“Sis Draper,” “Magnolia Wind”) and Jim Lauderdale (“Forever Ain’t No Trouble Now). Shawn also penned Blake Shelton’s “Nobody But Me”. A true artist, Camp’s previous solo albums – including 1993’s Shawn Camp, 2004’s Live at the Station Inn and Fireball in 2006 – consistently have turned heads. The accomplished instrumentalist, who has accompanied luminaries including Guy Clark and John Prine, frequently backs seamless lyrics with his fiery fiddle, guitar and mandolin riffs. Shawn is also a talented producer; a skill that won him a Grammy nomination in 2013 and a Grammy win for 2014’s Best Folk Album of the Year (Guy Clark’s, My Favorite Picture Of You). Most recently, Shawn formed the band with NRBQ’s “Big Al” Anderson to make the World Famous Headliners (along with Pat McLaughlin, Greg Morrow and Michael Rhodes). Their debut album spent over 6 weeks in AMA’s top 20 and was named one of the Top 100 Americana Albums of 2012. Recent Accolades: -2014 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album of the Year: Guy Clark’s My Favorite Picture Of You – AMA Album of the Year: This One’s for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark (co-producers w/ Tamara Saviano) – 2013 GRAMMY Nomination: This One’s for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark  (co-producers w/ Tamara Saviano) – BMI Songwriting Award: Billy Currington’s “Love Done Gone”

Whether it’s unmatched authors in the MFA Program for Writers residency or world-renowned musicians of the folk and Celtic variety, summers at Warren Wilson College have put the fine arts front and center. The longest running tradition, the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival, is entering its 48th season with performances throughout July in Asheville, Greenville and Waynesville. The first concerts launch July 1-3. “After nearly 50 years, the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival attracts the world’s top talent,” said Inessa Zaretsky, director and pianist for the festival. “This year, we’re thrilled to have the Jasper String Quartet and percussionist Yousif Sheronick launching our first concerts of 2017.” Philadelphia’s Jasper String Quartet, the professional quartet in residence at Temple University's Center for Gifted Young Musicians, returns to the festival for the seventh consecutive year. Winner of the 2011 Chamber Music America Cleveland Quartet Award, “the Jaspers … match their sounds perfectly, as if each swelling chord were coming out of a single, impossibly well-tuned organ, instead of four distinct instruments," according to the New Haven Advocate. “The Jasper String Quartet is the definition of excellence. Warren Wilson College is fortunate to feature so many amazing musicians each summer, and the Jaspers round out the series so eloquently. While they are known for exquisite music, the quartet takes it to the next level by connecting audience members to the pieces on a very real and emotional level,” Zaretsky said. Noted by The New York Times for his “wizardry on a range of humble frame drums,” Yousif Sheronick is accomplished in the classical, world, jazz and rock music arenas, according to his biography. He honed his skills at Yale University and additional study around the world. Sheronick has shared the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Branford Marsalis and Paul Winter, among countless others. Along with Zaretsky, the Jasper String Quartet and Sheronick will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s “String Quartet in E minor Op. 44 No. 2,” Giovanni Sollima’s “Quintet for Percussion and String Quartet,” Donnacha Dennehy’s “Pushpulling (2007)” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Piano Quintet Op. 57.” The concerts start at 7:30 p.m. and are set for July 1 at Warren Wilson College’s Kittredge Theater in Asheville, July 2 at the Performing Arts Center in Waynesville and July 3 at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, South Carolina. The first concerts of the series will be a tribute to longtime festival pianist Ruth Geiger. For tickets and more information, visit https://www.scm-festival.com.

LinksIDLEWILD SOUTH, The Allman Brothers Band Tribute, was co-founded by keyboardist and vocalist Don Eason, a veteran musician whose initial influence of The Allman Brothers Band's live performance goes back to his first concert experience of the band on Easter Weekend of 1970, at The Winter's End Concert in Bithlo, Florida.
A duo of drummers, (including co-founder) Robert Kintner, and John Flowers, provides the foundation with bassist Tim Smith rounding out the rhythm section. Slide Guitarist Dave George and Lead Guitarist/ Vocalist Pete Waggoner bring forth the dual guitar harmonies and searing guitar leads Duane Allman and Dickie Betts pioneered in the late 1960's.

In the tradition of The Allman Brothers Band, IDLEWILD SOUTH's live shows can exceed a staggering 3 1/2 to 4 hours non- stop in length. The set lists are different every night, drawing from The Allman Brothers Bands self-titled debut album, 2nd album Idlewild South, Live At Fillmore East, Eat A Peach, and Brothers and Sisters, all recorded between 1969 and 1974. A few select songs from their albums between 1989 and 2000 are also included.
