Description:

When Xylouris White recorded their second album, this most intuitive and inquisitive of duos did what comes naturally to them: expanded their horizons. For George Xylouris, the Cretan lute player who partners here with the Dirty Three's preternaturally fluent Australian drummer Jim White, one aim was to extend a core metaphor of their ruggedly visionary debut album, 2014's Goats. "Like goats walking in the mountain" is Xylouris' poetic analogy for their approach: "They may not know the place, but they can walk easily and take risks and feel comfortable. Really, the goats inspired us."That exploratory pitch is matched by the majestic Black Peak, named after a mountain top in Crete and, says Xylouris, "recorded everywhere". A peak in both artists' careers, the album testifies to their determination to stretch the scope of their instruments and forge something vigorously questing from more traditional roots. Where Goats was mostly instrumental, Black Peak gives Xylouris's full-force baritone a lead role. And where Goats was often frisky, its tumultuous, tender and terrifically expressive follow-up drives harder and dives deeper."As we work together we can see the horizon is always open," says Xylouris, "because that's how we work. We give each other space, and that comes from the space we always try to give the bands and the people who we work with in the past."Partly, Black Peak pays testimony to both men's remarkable histories. One of Crete's best-loved artists, Xylouris is a scion of Greek musical royalty, a family from a mountain village near the Cave of Zeus. His father is revered singer / lyra player Psarandonis. A child when he began playing the lute, Xylouris would accompany his father in a backing role. Yet just as Psarandonis stretched the lyra's range ("If music is measured in meter," Psarandonis said, "I play in kilometre!"), so Xylouris elevated his eight-string laouto to the lead role in his Xylouris Ensemble.Jim White has commanded international attention for more than two decades as part of Australia's Dirty Three, storm's-eye instrumental diviners whose emotionally choppy soundscapes brim with elemental force. Now New York-based, White is often found collaborating with alt-A-listers (including: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, PJ Harvey, Nina Nastasia, Cat Power and Smog,) where his playing redeploys the rolling momentum of free-jazz to supple ends, from sensitive to seismic.PJ Harvey has likened White's playing to dancing. Yet if dancers need partners, Black Peak also pays testimony to a friendship forged over 25-plus years. Xylouris was touring with his Ensemble when he met White in Melbourne in the early 1990s, when the drummer was in his pre-Dirty Three avant-rock outfit Venom P Stinger. In retrospect, a cycle of influence emerges: Xylouris's 1990s live contributions to the Dirty Three seem to set a blueprint for Xylouris White, yet the Dirty Three were themselves inspired by Xylouris and Psarandonis. That mutual admiration shapes the way the duo operate on Black Peak, always listening, encouraging, accommodating. "Each one has different roles at the same time, accompaniment and lead role," explains Xylouris. "It's very fluid."This fluidity is clear from the rolling explosion of the title-track, where White's thunderous rhythm seems to urge, and be urged along in turn, by Xylouris's chugging lute-rock riff, pirouetting melody and soaring vocal. "Forging" maintains the momentum, Xylouris's thrashing, thrilling lute melody circling the rock of White's pulsing drum. Elsewhere, Xylouris White re-write their route map. "Hey, Musicians" is rich and sonorous. The skin-tingling crawl of "Erotokritos (Opening)" draws on romantic renaissance verse; "Short Rhapsody" is a joyous jam of slashing laouto and coiled percussion; "Pretty Kondilies" is dancing and declamatory. Finally, "The Feast" sprawls gorgeously between tradition and invention, its sombre, sighing spaces shared with guest star Psarandonis' stunning lyra and voice. It took until 2013 for Xylouris and White to form as a duo, a process accelerated when White played with Xylouris and Psarandonis at a Nick Cave-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Australia. Just as other parties helped unite them, so the path to Black Peak was trod with support. The producer is Fugazi's Guy Picciotto, as on Goats (Xylouris: "His enthusiasm and aesthetic bring richness to the proceedings."); the ghostly harmonies on "Erotokritos" come from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy."All these things together, Jim from Australia, me from Crete, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy from Kentucky, Psarantonis from Crete, Guy Picciotto from Washington give us the inspiration of the horizon," says Xylouris. "Jim and I travel a great deal and we like to do so. We have been doing that together the past three years, which is what inspired us to think of the horizon."We're still goats," he adds, "now on the horizon." On the spectacular Black Peak, Xylouris White show just how far their horizons can stretch.

Mac Sabbath: Lord of the Swirled - Treehouse Sessions Mac Sabbath - Sweet Beef, Crescent Ballroom, Phoenix, AZ 7-10-15 Mac Sabbath "Frying Pan" It was the Year of Our Lord 2013, and I was devouring a cheeseburger in a Chatsworth, CA franchise of a certain multinational fast food conglomerate which shall remain nameless. A crazed skull face painted, dirt-bag, clown sat down beside me. This Skeletor reject of Uriah Heap introduced himself as Ronald Osborne and was familiar with my work. I was informed that Ronald, Slayer Mac Cheeze, Grimalice, and the Cat Burglar, were performing secret rock shows in the bunker-like basements of the local restaurants. But the time had come, he said, to bring drive-thru metal up from the "underground," and he asked if I would consider becoming the manager. BAM! Abruptly we were thrown to the sidewalk. (Apparently the daytime manager was not informed of this activity) I looked over at Ronald, watched him brush off the sodium chloride and GMO remnants of my UN happy meal.

Before I knew it, I was in a burger stand bomb shelter, witnessing Black Sabbath music, hilarious fast food lyrics, smoldering clown heads with laser eyes, a giant purple gumdrop bass player, and Tony Iommi with a giant cheeseburger head. I was confused, amazed and can't ever remember feeling so………happy!

Metalachi HOT FOR TEACHER music video Metalachi CRAZY TRAIN music video Metalachi - Master Of Puppets ( Amazing violin intro ) America's Got Talent 2015 S10E05 Metalachi The Metal Mariachi Band THE STORY OF METALACHI…

On a hot summer night in Veracruz Mexico circa 1982, Consuela Espinoza stumbled out of her dilapidated shanty and into Rock N Roll history. What began as an innocent night of snorting horse tranquilzers in a hotel room with seven members of the village jai alai team went on to produce the greatest metal band to ever live. Unhampered by a steady regime of tequila and ill advised sumo lessons, nine months later five bastard children where born. Unable to care for her hungry offspring and concerned that motherhood would seriously interfere with her Tuesday night Karaoke league, Consuela hastily packed the babies into the saddlebags of a burro and sent her children off to America in search of a better life. Against all odds, 14 years later, and nearly dead from dehydration, the burro knelt down to drink from the stagnant waters of the Rio Grande just ouside of Juarez Mexico –mere yards from the U.S. border. With one fleeting burst of energy the brothers Espinoza cinco climbed from their leather restraints and scampered the vast reaches of the river, collapsing onto the sweet amber hue of American soil. As if by destiny, lodged in the sand beneath their tanned faces was a record sleeve upon which were the words "PARANOID" and "BLACK SABBATH". For many years to follow, this definitive black metal album served not only as a teacher and a mentor..but also as a friend. From these bleak and humble begins grew the seed that would
eventually be the band we know today. Often referred to as the greatest heavy metal band to ever live..always referred to as…METALACHI.

Johnny, James and Zack, the co-hosts of the Crafted Podcast, will be working on a collaboration project the weekend of April 1st at Johnny's shop. We decided it'd be a fun idea to have a meetup with some listeners and viewers while we're all in town. We'll start the meetup at Asheville Hardware, one of the coolest woodworking stores around. We'll hang out, drool over the amazing slabs, chat woodworking, and maybe eat a little something there. Once we've talked enough woodworking to start feeling parched, we'll walk to one of the half dozen breweries within a block of Asheville Hardware. We have a choice of Burial, the Funkatorium, Green Man, Twin Leaf, Catawba, and a few others.

LinksTAYLOR MARTIN
http://taylormartin.org/

Taylor Martin was born September 2, 1980. Raised near Richmond, Virginia, this life-long lover of music began playing guitar at the age of 14. Taylor remembers, “After I got the basic chords down, I was already into writing songs. I was real shy about my voice, so I would walk down to the James River, sit on a rock, and just play and sing until it got too dark or cold.”

As soon as Taylor could drive, he began going to hear live music nearly every night of the week. The local bands around Richmond at the time–bands like Agents of Good Roots, and Walter Bell and the Latin Jazz Unit were early influences. “I would go see everything: Ravi Shankar, Magraw Gap, Pat Metheny, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Friends of Taylor told him about a producer in town named Eric Willson. Willson had been Ricky Skaggs’s sound man for ten years. “I heard the High Windy album, ‘A Greater Storm,’ that Eric had produced for my friends,” recalls Taylor. “It sounded great, and I knew right then that Eric was who I wanted to work with. We met and I demoed songs for him. That was the beginning of my first real album, ‘Engine’.”

Taylor toured for three years with the material from “Engine.” He then released his second album, “Heartache or Bust.” Since that time, Taylor has been playing nonstop across the Eastern seaboard. He has performed at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah and the Suwannee Springfest in Live Oak, Florida. He also sat in with national touring acts Donna the Buffalo and Mountain Heart.

WOODY WOOD
http://www.aaronwoodywood.com/

Aaron Woody Wood’s story is one steeped in music and tradition. Woody is straight up Appalachian Soul music. Carved from a piece of the NC foothills Rock and then Rolled through the Mississippi Delta mud, he’s a cosmic cowboy who represents the powerful soul and energy of American music.

Beginning all the way back in Love Valley in the Piedmont foothills of North Carolina where the famous Fiddler’s Grove was held, Woody was brought up in a family full of musicians and musical talent. As long as he could remember there was music surrounding his life. Woody’s Father, AL Wood, was an important figure in Contemporary Bluegrass Music throughout the 60’s and 70’s helping define that genre of music alongside bands like ‘Seldom Scene’ and ‘Country Gentlemen’. AL Wood was well respected for his songwriting, tenor singing, and banjo playing putting out records when Bluegrass was just beginning to get popular. Playing at the Grand Ole Opry 3 times and performing at the White House were among some of the great achievements of AL Wood’s career. Woody’s Mom influenced him through encouraging him to listen to her collection of rock n roll records turning him on to artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Rockabilly music.

Being the youngest of 5 kids, all of whom played instruments or sang, Woody was immersed in music and tradition from a very young and formative time in his life. His first memory of being on stage was at the young age of 6 where he played a tiny banjo his Dad had made for him. He played and sang next to his Dad and Bill Monroe that day. Between the old time bluegrass his Father and brothers played and The Piedmont Blues that he was drawn to in his teenage years, his musical styles and influences were taking shape through his guitar playing and songwriting.

At 20, Aaron Woody Wood moved to the Asheville, NC mountains and soon began busking on the downtown streets with what would end up becoming the members of the Rag n Roll swing style Ragtime music of The Blue Rags - and would be the start of Woody’s musical career as an artist. When Woody was 23 the band was signed to Sub Pop Records and began touring, eventually recording 2 CD's and playing in 47 states across the country and abroad over the following 5 years before disbanding. Along the tours they opened up for some of the greatest like Alabama, Leon Russell, Southern Culture on the Skids, Santana, Pavement, and Ziggy Marley in places like The Oregon Country Fair, High Sierra Fest, City Stages in Birmingham, Al and SummerFest in Milwaukee. Woody was featured in Acoustic Guitar Player Magazine in April of 1998 for the work that was being released during these years.

Over the next 10 years Aaron Woody Wood had many successes as a solo artist and began various bands in Asheville like the Sufi Brothers, Custard Pie, and Hollywood Red, opening up for Mountain and Kenny Wayne Shepard. In 2006 he was featured on the CMT television show Big Break, where he beat out over 400 local Asheville musicians to open for Country Superstar Sara Evans. The show aired numerous times on the network. Woody spent those years all over the country doing club shows and festivals like Bonaroo and The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

New Orleans has always been like a second home to Woody. While spending time in The Big Easy he recorded 2 albums and performed regularly with the Blue Brass Project, a blend of traditional New Orleans jazz and bluegrass music. The Blue Brass sessions features Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Woody, members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Larry Keel, and Trombone Shorty. He performed in New Orleans at Voodoo Fest and JazzFest in 2011 and 2012 with the Mardi Gras Indian funk band, the 101 Runners.

Most recently Woody has been doing studio work and opening up for acts like Brad Paisley, Buddy Guy, Jamey Johnson, Kellie Pickler, David Holt and Tony Joe White. He sang on The Avett Brothers 2013 release Magpie and The Dandelion - and continues to perform with and open for top acts like American Idol's 2014 winner Caleb Johnson as well as performing at Warren Haynes annual XMas Jam in Asheville, NC every year. He continues his focus on songwriting and fresh styles of guitar picking while collaborating on new creative projects.
Billy Cardine and North of Too Far Downs

Website
Facebook
LinksInspired by comedian Louis CK, Billy set aside all his original music and started writing fresh in the Winter of 15/16. The music was developed by putting the fresh charts in front of a new group of sight readers each week at The ByWater in Asheville. It was exciting to see what worked and what didn't, what each musician brought to the table, and how that helped shape the concept of each song. Billy and Simon George, friends due to their connection at the UNCA jazz piano department, have found an exciting common ground where composition meets groove and exciting rhythms meet beautiful harmony.

The group got it's name from the map of Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings. On the map, ByWater is just north of Too Far Downs.

Description:
Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco-based classically trained pianist Holly Bowling, who infuses jam band music with a technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at SF State University, Bowling has turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013’s Distillation Of A Dream album and the newly released Grateful Dead focused Better Left Unsung (released December 9, 2016 through The Royal Potato Family). Her instantly compelling playing and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Branford Marsalis, and other luminaries who’ve asked Bowling to perform with them, and led to her being featured both as a solo artist and band collaborator as part of this years Christmas Jam hosted by Warren Haynes. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling plans to expand her solo touring in 2017 and beyond.

Experiencing the music of Sons Of An Illustrious Father is like being invited into a trusted triangle of creativity, emotion, spiritual and personal and interpersonal growth. Here, three stories of three songwriters/singers/instrumentalists merge selflessly into one artistic continuum. This February, the New York-based trio releases its most boldly vulnerable and artistically distinct body of work yet; its third album, 'Revol' (Big Picnic Records). "Everyone has crucibles in life, for us, by singing each other's songs, and through being present for one another, we all share in the catharsis of moving through suffering," says Ezra Miller, vocals, drums, percussion, and keyboards. ." Josh Aubin, vocals, bass, keyboards, and percussion adds: "These songs are rooted in an honest emotional space. They're about the relationships we have outside and inside the band."Lilah Larson, vocals, guitars, drums, percussion, and bass, chimes in: "We can bring songs to each other and never have to explain the context. We've been together so long that a lot is unspoken -- it's a sibling, lover, family thing -- it's the most serious and longest relationship I've been in." Core to the group's artistry is a discourse of challenging and blurring the lines of identity conventions. Sons Of An Illustrious Father seeks to defy normative standards in genre, in belief, in relationships, in its members' daily practices, in its members' relationship to, and perception of, gender identity and sexuality, and, generally, in the way the Sons and interact with themselves, others and the world that surrounds. When pressed, the three playfully refer to its music as "future folk" or "heavy meadow." The trio's free spirited creativity has garnered comparisons to such diverse artists as The Band, Tom Waits, and Nirvana. Sons take a collaborative approach to songwriting, signing separate songs, and creating three-part harmonies. Highlights in Sons career, thus far, include being singled out as a highlight for their CMJ debut by Jon Pareles of the New York Times, selling out a limited edition version of a previous album, and touring with poet/musician Saul Williams. The title of the band's latest album, 'Revol,' brims with the group's foundational and enigmatic mythos. "The title refers to a number of words, one being 'revolt,' and it speaks to the album's concepts of love, global struggle, and interpersonal revolt against binary oppression," Lilah explains. Ezra chimes in: "It also references the word 'reveling' and speaks to reveling the gift of life." 'Revol' manages to showcase maturity and cohesion while boasting three distinctly gifted songwriters. Throughout the album, Sons explores identity politics, humanitarianism, ecological concerns, and relationships through each songwriter's individual artistic flair. The album opens gorgeously with "PPM," a track that beckons mournfully with vocalizing that feels like it's wafting in from a distant haunting. Urgently, the song comes into sonic focus with Ezra's weary vocals backed by full drums, rubbery bass, and a hypnotically lyrical keyboard refrain. From there, the song shoots upward with moony harmonies and impressionistic electronic ambience. One of Lilah's stunning contributions is the mangled art-rock "Conquest," which evokes a knife fight between Tom Waits and the Pixies. It slithers, it's abrasive, and it howls with purpose. The track is an emotional and conceptual manifesto for Sons. Here Lilah sings about the intersection of global oppressions, about how misogyny, racism, capitalism, and colonialism intersect. She tackles each facet and issue with sinister sultriness. The song will be released as a single bundled with an arrestingly thoughtful graphic novel. Josh's elegant "Post Future" concludes the album. It's poised and poignant, and its centered beauty is piercing. Other album highlights are the burly theatricality of Lilah's breakup song "Because," and Ezra's "Armageddon" which evokes classical music in its emotional scope, thrusting up from fragile intimate passages to anthemic climaxes. 'Revol' was recorded in Montreal at Hotel2Tango (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade) by Howard Bilerman who also mixed the album. "I saw this video of Howard where he likened the production process to midwifery. It made us feel like our ethos were aligned, and they were," Lilah says. Howard's vast knowledge of effects and production techniques, artistic intuition, and sensitivity to band dynamics enabled him to help Sons Of Illustrious Father create its most lush and visceral album to date. Sons Of An Illustrious Father, as it's known today, emerged three years ago one winter night, in the wake of the turmoil and despair of having lost two of its band members. This painfully complex time forged a deeper bond between Josh, Lilah, and Ezra, and they committed themselves to the familial musical spearhead of Sons. "The journey for us has been about really being present for each other as friends, family, and bandmates," Ezra says, concluding: "I remember during our first tour one sound engineer we worked with sent us an email with tips for a band on the road. One was 'remember your friendship is what powers the songs.' We printed that out, framed it, and hung it up on the mantle of our bus. The nature of our love, and sense of family as a band, is what makes the music so strong and pure."

John Kadlecik of Dark Star Orchestra, Furthur, Golden Gate Wingmen and his own solo ventures comes to Asheville NC for a solo Acousti'Lectric show. This intimate performance will feature a mix of Kadlecik originals with his unique take on varied songs throughout the history of music, and of course the Grateful Dead songbook.Link below for an example of the show type (free download):https://archive.org/details/jk2015-04-04.sbd.pairdoc.44kJohn's bioJohn Kadlecik was born on June 28, 1969 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. His father a city manager, and his mother an artist, John's family moved every few years, and he grew up in several mid-western towns. Omaha, Nebraska; Cincinnati, Ohio; and then, in Davenport, Iowa at the age of nine, John began to study classical violin. Moving to Palatine, Illinois in the Chicago suburbs at the beginning of his high school years, John caught the rock-n-roll bug, and, on a quest to understand improvisation, began teaching himself guitar and mandolin. While still in high school, John played guitar in several bands, covering a broad spectrum of American and British "guitar rock" as well as writing songs and learning the rudiments of multi-track recording.John flirted briefly with college life, going to William Rainey Harper College as a classical guitar music major. But, he began living on his own, and found work, school, and his own local bands to be too much on his plate. It was during this time that a friend turned John onto the Grateful Dead. He fell in love instantly, and, shortly thereafter, dropped out of college. By this time, however, John was already playing out a few times a year, anywhere an underage musician could find a gig, and Chicago would be where he called home for the next fifteen years of his life.Once he turned twenty-one, John began playing regularly with several local and regional groups, most notably Hairball Willie and Uncle John's Band. While most of the bands he played with wrote their own music, in 1997 John co-founded the group, Dark Star Orchestra, a band exclusively devoted to playing the well-documented actual setlists of the Grateful Dead. Originally started as a side-project house band for some of the best local deadhead musicians, "DSO" rapidly became a nationally touring band, attracting many guests to join them onstage, including John Fishman, Mike Gordon, Sam Bush, Jorma Kaukonen John Popper, Sanjay Mishra, Tom Constanten, Vince Welnick, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bob Weir to name a few. While spending the better part of twelve years of his life touring with DSO, John also found time for other musical projects, both live and studio. A bluegrass band, numerous short-lived original groups, and then in 2003 John began playing sporadically with Melvin Seals. Out of those shows came a group with Melvin called The Mix, also featuring Greg Anton, Jeff Pevar, and Kevin Rosen. The Mix toured nationally and went on to sign a recording contract, releasing a full length CD in 2004 titled, American Spring, but eventually disbanded for lack time in everyone's schedule to tour. And then, of course, in 2009 John departed from Dark Star Orchestra to join Furthur.John now lives near Washington, DC with his wife, Katy Gaughan, and, when not on the road with Furthur, performs in the DC area with the newly formed and simply named John K Band, as well as solo acoustic and special guest appearances.

Description:
Despite his relatively young age, MPress recording artist Seth Glier is a seasoned troubadour. A singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who averages over 250 live performances annually, Seth has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals. He’s shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar. His music has also caught the ears of fans, industry and critics alike, with USA Today stating that his “exquisite tenor echoes Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel.” Building on the acclaim of his Grammy®-nominated sophomore album The Next Right Thing, Glier’s subsequent record Things I Should Let You Know landed him his first Daytrotter session, was called “a genuine revelation” by Blurt Magazine, and was praised by M Music & Musicians Magazine for its “shimmering, seductive melodies”.

Thursday, April 6th at 6:30 pm - Rosenthal Wine Merchant French Wine Dinner at Local Provisions featuring 5 courses of locally sourced, seasonal fare and French wines from famed importer Neal Rosenthal. $85/person includes tax and tip -- please call Local Provisions at 828.424.7815 to make your reservation(s). Table Wine and Local Provisions are celebrating farmers near and far! I share a similar philosophy with Chef Justin Burdett of Local Provisions. The highest quality and best tasting foods and wines come from small, conscientious, family owned and operated farms and wineries. That simple premise guides us and the work we do, and we are excited to collaborate on this very special food and wine event. Also sharing our philosophy is New York City-based importer Neal Rosenthal. For over 40 years, Neal has been selecting and importing wines from small, family owned, traditionally run estate wineries scattered throughout France and Italy. Join us for a 5-course meal paired with some of Neal Rosenthal's finest French wines. Mike Tiano of The Haw River Wine Man and yours truly will be on hand to discuss the wines and the pairings, and all of the wines will be available for purchase at deeply discounted prices. At just $85/person all inclusive, this is one of the best wine and dine extravaganzas in Asheville. Being that Chef Justin only buys what is fresh, local, and in season, the menu will be announced closer to the date of the dinner. Trust me, it's going to be great! Cheers and we hope to see your for this incredible night of food and wine. *****If you have any food allergies or restrictions, just call the restaurant at 828.424.7815 and Chef Justin will offer delicious alternatives.
