Description:

The American West. Americas America. It was here in three very different worlds that Shannon and the Clams were spawned. From the dark redwood forests of Oregon emerged Cody Blanchard: singer and guitarist. The dusty walnut orchards and vineyards of northern California gave us Shannon Shaw: singer and bassist. Out of the lonely dunes of Californias central coast shambled Nate Mayhem: drummer and keys. These three talented visual artists were drawn separately to Oakland, California and it was there that the Clams began playing house parties and grimy clubs. The band was forged in the anachronistic remote communities of the west, in some strange mixture of computer show and country fair; their music is some odd alloy of The Last Picture Show and The Decline of Western Civilization. The pioneer spirit of western life is all over this band: pushing into the unknown, blazing their own trail, creating their own destiny, with the accompanying canyon-esque loneliness and untamed joy only truly known by those with the courage to pull up stakes and head off into the big empty sunset.Gone by the Dawn, the newest Shannon and the Clams album, is their best work to date. The music is complex, the lyrical content is emotionally raw and honest, and the production is the strangest its ever been. The album was written as one member was recovering from a serious breakup and another was deep in one. The lyrics reflect it, and the entire album is dripping with sadness, pain, and introspection. Shannon and Cody have not written generic songs about love or the lack of it. Instead they have written about their very own specific heartbreak, mistreatment, and mental trials. The emotion is palpable. On Gone by the Dawn the Clams have DARED TO BE REAL. Theyve exposed their true emotions, which is whats most moving about the album. People are scared to be so real. Society does not encourage it. Folks remain guarded to protect themselves from being mocked, punished, and becoming outcast . The Clams have opted to forgo the potential tongue-clucking finger-waggers, and have instead had the artistic courage and audacity to splay their pain and struggles out for all to hear. We are lucky to hear them get so damn real. For Gone by the Dawn, the Oakland trio hooked up with studio wizard and renaissance-man Sonny Smith to record the album at Tiny Telephone Recording in San Francisco. Best known as the driving force behind San Franciscos beloved Sonny and the Sunsets, Smith uses his refreshing production techniques to create an engaging sonic landscape without compromising the Clams signature Lou Christie-meets-The Circle Jerks sound. The Clams have evolved: their skills are sharper, their chops are tighter and weirder and theyve added new instruments to to the mix. A whole new dimension of the Clams has emerged.Nowadays, its exceedingly rare for a two-and-half minute rock song to have raw emotional power, but with Gone by the Dawn Shannon and the Clams have gifted us an entire album of them.

LinksAndrew Finn Magill is a fiddler/violinist who straddles genres. By 16, he was a two-time finalist at the All-Ireland fiddle championships. In 2011 he produced a Fulbright-MtvU funded concept album about AIDS with Afro-vibes artist from Malawi Peter Mawanga. He currently leads his own quartet of Brazilian choro, O Finno and is a founding member of Violino no Choro.

In 2016 he is launching two albums Roots and Branches which integrate Irish music with modern acoustic and jazz influences and feature guest appearances by John Doyle, Colin Farrell and Cillian Vallelly (Lúnasa), Paul McKenna and Seán Gray (The Paul McKenna Band), Grant Gordy (The David Grisman Quintet), Sean Earnest (The Yanks), Duncan Wickel (The Rondo Rigs), David Brown (Rising Appalachia), Vincent Fogarty (The Red Wellies), Dan Iannucci, and Micah Thomas.

In 2005 he released Drive & Lift, a debut featuring ex-Solas guitarist John Doyle. It received rave reviews in Dirty Linen and Sing Out! magazine and has been featured multiple times on NPR’s The Thistle & Shamrock.

“He is an innovator and composer with clearly his own signature. This (Drive & Lift) is just an awesome debut, which delights one more on each listen.” — National Heritage Award Winner, fiddler Liz Carroll

He has toured the U.S. and Canada with the Glasgow-based Paul McKenna Band, the 2009 Scots Trad Music winners of “Best Up and Coming Band” and has performed internationally with African music icon Peter Mawanga. In 2011- 2012 he toured through out France with the popular French Dance revue "Celtic Dances" under the musical direction of Liz Knowles & Kieran O'Hare.

In 2009, Andrew Finn received a Fulbright-MtvU Fellowship to co-write and co-produce an album that musically captures ten experiences of HIV/AIDS through song in Malawi, Southern Africa. The result, Mau a Malawi: Stories of AIDS was released on October 14th, 2011 at the University of North Carolina’s Memorial Hall. Sales from Mau a Malawi are invested in programs to keep vulnerable Malawian children in school and empower them through the arts.

“The inspiring cross-cultural performances on this beautiful album “Mau A Malawi: Stories of AIDS” remind us of the human cost of this disease as well as the imperative to unite in creating an AIDS-free generation. —Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator

Since 2014 Andrew Finn has been developing a Brazilian music project O FInno which is inspired by Brazil's Choro tradition, a highly technical instrumental genre emerging out of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1800s. In less than a year, the group has been featured twice in public performance series Viva o Talento, local radio, and performed throughout Rio de Janeiro.

Andrew Finn has years of experience teaching fiddle/violin in a range of styles. Over the years he has taught many private students as well as at many private music camps including the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp, the Swannanoa Gathering's Celtic and Fiddle Weeks, O'Flaherty Irish Music Youth Camp, Common Ground on the Hill, Goderich Celtic Roots, Old Songs, and the ETSU Summer fiddle Camp.

Since being awarded the title of “Best Up and Coming Artist of 2009″ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, The Paul McKenna Band have gone from strength to strength touring extensively throughout USA, Canada and Europe.

Combining their love for Folk and Traditional music, as well as original songs and tunes; The Paul McKenna Band from Scotland has been captivating audiences with live performances of their new album, titled ‘Elements’, out now on Greentrax Records.

Concert highlights over the last few years include performances at Celtic Connections Glasgow, The Cambridge Folk Festival England, Tonder Festival Denmark, Milwaukee Irish Festival USA and Edmonton Folk Festival Canada.

In 2015 the band will play at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida representing Scotland at Epcot Centre.

With a contemporary approach to songs, although not straying too far from their roots, their arrangements are both fresh and innovative. The exciting sound of The Paul McKenna Band is created through outstanding Vocals, driving Guitar and Bouzouki, intense fiddle playing, a warm pairing of flute and whistles and dynamic bodhrán and percussion.

Doug Stanhope has been compared to such fearless comic revolutionaries as Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks. But his work makes it abundantly clear that he's a complete original. As Ricky Gervais tweeted, "Doug Stanhope might be the most important standup working today."His live show was twice named "Best Stand-Up Show" of the year by Time Out New York, his confrontational rants encompassing caustic social commentary, outlandish first-person narratives, graphic sex and perversion sometimes within the same sentence. Fueled by equal amounts of anger, outrage and alcohol, Stanhope rails against western civilization's slide into apathy and stupidity, always on the edge of implosion yet fully in control and never afraid to risk pissing off his audiences. "Stanhope is a genius parading around the slums of failed ideologyhe's Charles Bukowski with dick jokes drunkenly fueled by Thomas Payne," declared The San Antonio Current. Doug's latest comedy special, "No Place Like Home," is streaming now via Seeso.

Original hard driving blues and electrified old time fiddle music intertwined with mind-bending pop reminiscent of 60’s era psychedelia and twisty, sometimes satirical violin-funk instrumentals. The Boston Globe calls him a “Considerable talent…[he] is as persuasive in a traditional Irish ballad as he is country fiddling or ripping through cascading classical flourishes or atonal double stops”. A “mad scientist of the violin”, Duncan conjures boiling rhythms and syrupy textures unchained by the stereotypes associated with the violin in todays world. Bring your best pair of dancing shoes and save your suit for the symphony. Duncan’s music has all the finesse and spirit of a world traveler, while remaining at its core uniquely asheville. Duncan will be joined by Asheville’s own Chris Rosser and River Guerguerian.

On any given night the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. This allows fans both young and old to share in the experience. By recreating set lists from the past, and by developing their own sets of Dead songs, Dark Star Orchestra offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon. Honoring both the band and the fans, Dark Star Orchestra’s members seek out the unique style and sound of each era while simultaneously offering their own informed improvisations creating a sound that truly encapsulate the energy and the experience.

Death in June are a neofolk group led by English folk musician Douglas Pearce, better known as Douglas P. The band was originally formed in Britain in 1981 as a trio, but after the other members left in 1984 and 1985 to work on other projects, the group became the work of Douglas P. and various collaborators. Douglas P. now lives in Australia.Over the band's three decades of existence, they have made numerous shifts in style and presentation, resulting in an overall shift from initial post-punk and Industrial Records influence to a more acoustic and folk music-oriented approach. They are sometimes considered controversial (largely due to usage of themes and imagery relating to Nazi Germany). Douglas P.'s influence was instrumental in sparking neofolk, of which his music has subsequently become a part.

Description:

Often referred to as The Hendrix of the Sahara, Vieux Farka Tour was born in Niafunk, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Tour, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Tour came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father dissaproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabat, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.Vieux was initially a drummer / calabash player at Malis Institut National des Arts, but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Tour was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him, and these recordings, which can be heard on Vieuxs debut CD, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Tour played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days, at peace with, and proud of, his sons talent as a musician. In 2005, Eric Herman (still Vieuxs manager today) of Modiba Productions expressed an interest in producing an album for Vieux; this led to Vieuxs self-titled debut album, released by World Village in 2007. Ali Farka Tours work to tackle the problem of malaria is continued as 10% of proceeds are donated to Modibas Fight Malaria campaign in Niafunk through which over 3000 mosquito nets have been delivered to children and pregnant women in the Timbuktu region of Mali. On this first album, Vieux pays homage to his father and follows Alis musical tradition, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabat, as well as his late father. One of the tracks, Courage, is on the soundtrack of the film The First Grader (2010).On his second record, Fondo on Six Degrees (2009), Vieux branched out and presented his own sound: while remaining true to the roots of his fathers music he uses elements of rock, Latin music, and other African influences. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim from across the globe, and Vieux was clearly moving out of his fathers shadow.By June 2010, Vieux was performing at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. That month Vieux also released his first live album, LIVE. His live performances are highly energized and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile, both of which captivate audiences from all audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages). In 2011 Vieux released his 3rd studio album, The Secret, so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son. It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno (of the Soulive trio) and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. The title track is the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father. With the heralded release of The Secret, Vieux Farka Tour has clearly established himself as one of the worlds rare musical talents and guitar virtuosos with a distinct style that always pays homage to the past while looking towards the future.Vieux released The Tel Aviv Session (Cumbancha) in April 2012, a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed The Tour-Raichel Collective that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as a masterpiece and one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music, drawing comparisons to Ali Farka Tour and Ry Cooders legendary Talking Timbuktu album. In 2013, Vieux Farka Tours beautiful and critically acclaimed latest album Mon Pays was released as an homage to his homeland. Being that his native Mali had recently been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012, Mon Pays was devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his native Mali. Translated as My Country, this predominantly acoustic undertaking transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation. Two songs on the project -Future and Peace feature Sidiki Diabates kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Tours spectacular guitar work. Both tracks represent an important generational passing of the torch as Sidikis father, Toumani is considered one of the greatest living kora masters and was a close friend of Vieuxs father Ali. Mon Pays has been widely hailed as the most mature and lovely record yet from one of this generations most exciting artists to come out of Mali and one of world musics true rising stars.Vieux reunited with Idan Raichel in Paris to record, release and subsequently tour their 2nd collaborative album as The Tour-Raichel Collective in 2014. The result was yet another musical and critical triumph, titled 'The Paris Session' (Cumbancha) revered by many as not just a musical gem for the ages but a powerful testimonial to the power of art and fraternity to transcend vast cultural and political divides. In 2015, Vieux released another unexpected, genre-bending collaborative album, this time with New York-based singer Julia Easterlin, aptly titled 'Touristes'. The album shot to the top of the iTunes World chart and earned critical acclaim, including that of John Schaefer (NPR) who called it "brilliant." With each new project, Vieux expands his horizons, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the worlds most talented and innovative musicians.

Noname (born Fatimah Warner) is an American artist from Chicago, Illinois, who blurs the lines of poetry and rap through the music she creates.

Noname grew up in Bronzeville, a historic neighborhood on the southside of Chicago that famously attracted accomplished black artists and intellectuals of all types. Noname first discovered her love for words while taking a creative writing class as a sophmore in high school.

She became enamored with poetry and spoken word, pouring over Def Poetry Jam clips on YouTube and attending open mics around the city. Noname regularly attended and performed at an open mic at Harold Washington Library,YouMedia’s Lyricist Loft.

After sessions at YouMedia, Noname would participate in cyphers and started getting into freestyling. When she was just a senior in high school, she placed third in “Louder Than A Bomb”, a poetry competition with 120 Chicago high schools in participation. She remained connected with the artists she met at YouMedia and in 2013, her verse on Chance the Rappers “Lost” attracted the beginning of her large fan base, most of whom have been following her every move since.

On July 31st, Noname released her debut project entitled Telefone which was 3 years in the making and highly anticipated by fans and media alike. The project instantly gained critical acclaim, with a rave review in Pitchfork and praise from major outlets like Rolling Stone, Complex, and Dazed & Confused. Noname has been hailed by The FADER, Complex, and Rolling Stone as one of the most exciting and important new artists of 2016.

Thanks to Telefone‘s success, Noname played some shows in support of Ms. Lauryn Hill, who handpicked Noname to open for her on tour. When first approaching the project, Noname set out to emulate the feeling of talking on the phone with someone for the first time. She describes Telefone as “an introductory conversation with someone you’re interested in”. But as Noname continued to work on the tape, it also transitioned a bit into mortality: the idea of life and death and the duality between those two things.

Co-produced by Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack, Aubrie Sellers) and Eric Masse (Rayland Baxter, Mikky Ekko), the 13-track album is already receiving widespread advance critical acclaim, with NPR Music praising, "...Worsham has made a sophomore album that, if there's justice, will give him an unforgettable year. The Blue Dogs "Isabelle" Blue Dogs Isabelle w/ Darius Rucker Blue Dogs - "I'd Give Anything" from "Live at the Dock Street Theatre...Again" On Wednesday, December 28, 2016, the Blue Dogs once again took over The Charleston Music Hall in their hometown to celebrate 28 years of making music. This show marked the Americana band’s fourth "homecoming" since their 25th Anniversary show in 2013, and to solidify it as annual affair, the band brought in MUSC's Children's Hospital in 2014 as a charity partner. By evening’s end of the 2016 show--thanks to support from Tito's Vodka, a variety of local sponsors, donations of ticket holders, as well as a generous gift by an anonymous donor and the overall match by The Press On Fund (for pediatric cancer research)--the Dogs fetched over $150,000.00, all of which benefited the capital campaign for the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital by funding the pediatric cancer research of MUSC Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Jacqueline Kraveka.

The show was again a sellout, and as in years past, the show included special guest appearances, this year featuring Grammy-award-winning country artist, songwriter, and producer Shawn Camp from Nashville (by way of Little Rock, Arkansas), and Mississippi singer-songwriter Cary Hudson, formerly of the band Blue Mountain.

Past shows have included guests such as Darius Rucker, Hootie and the Blowfish, Edwin McCain, Radney Foster, Pat McGee, 2015 Georgia Music Hall of Fame inductees Drivin’ N Cryin’, SC native Sadler Vaden (guitarist for Grammy-nominated artist Jason Isbell), Doug Jones of Greenville SC’s Cravin’ Melon, acclaimed South Carolina singer-songwriter Danielle Howle, Matthew Mayes & John Felty of Brevard, NC's Jupiter Coyote. There have always been a number of Charleston-based acts involved as well, including Bryson Jennings, Uncle Mingo, Five Way Friday, Dangermuffin's Dan Lotti, Dave Dunning and Live Bait, Mac Leaphart, John Wesley Satterfield, Travis Allison, Carroll Brown, Charlie Thompson, and most of the former and current members of the Blue Dogs. Unannounced guests are expected each year.

The band continues to perform in 2017 on a regular basis at venues everywhere including clubs, festivals, and colleges as well as for corporate events, private parties, and fundraisers. They continue to maintain an international fan-base, with all 9 of their recordings available through iTunes and other digital portals via their distributor, Redeye, and their CD's, DVD's and other merchandise offered exclusively at their website, www.bluedogs.com. 2017 marks 29 years since standup bassist Hank Futch joined forces with longtime friend, fellow Cub Scout, and acoustic guitarist/vocalist Bobby Houck under the band name “Blue Dogs,” and so they will celebrate their 29th Anniversary on December 29, 2017, once again at The Charleston Music Hall, and with many special guests to be announced later in the year.

With three albums already out in the musical world and a new record due [February 2016], their explosion is only a matter of time!" – Relix Magazine

After seven years of touring the world, a few original projects under their belt and an unwavering devotion to their craft, The Vegabonds have completed what might be considered their best work thus far. "What We're Made Of" consists of hard-hitting lyrics that don't hesitate to touch on real-life situations like growing up, moving on, heartbreak, loss and the struggles that accompany it all. Well versed, two-time Grammy nominated producer and engineer, Tom Tapley (Destiny's Child, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen), applied his soulful roots background and passion for rock 'n' roll to bring The Vegabonds' vision to fruition. The combination of Tapley's unmistakable chops, the analog console's raw sound and the group's impeccable instrumentation and vocals creates a genuine style that is exclusively their own. This 12-song journey is their fourth project as a group and the first release they have had since 2012. Over the past 3 years The Vegabonds have discovered what they're made of and are eager to share their adventure and self-discovery with the masses.

The Vegabonds are...
