Join Asheville';s Flatiron Writers for a FREE reading and book signing by award-winning memoirist Norma Watkins, in conversation with novelist Marjorie Klein, discussing Norma’s newest memoir, THAT WOMAN FROM MISSISSIPPI (Nautilus Publishing, 2017). Norma Watkins was raised to be a proper white Southern lady in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi. The daughter of a segregationist who defended Jim Crow laws, she married at nineteen, became a housewife, and had four children. But she shocked her friends and family by giving it all up.  Uncomfortable with the repression and bigotry in her world, she left her husband and young children for a chance at a new life where she could speak her mind, earn her own money, and find her own freedom. When asked what her books are about, Watkins says, “Civil rights, women wronged, good food, and bad sex.” Marjorie Klein is the author of the novel Test Pattern (Wm. Morrow Publishers, 2000), which was a Barnes and Noble "Discover Great New Writers" selection. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in various publications, including 20 years of free-lance work for Tropic, the Miami Herald's Sunday magazine. This event is sponsored by Asheville’s Flatiron Writers.

North Carolina based Hip Bones features:Gary Schwantes on saxophones and bamboo flutes, Shannon Hoover on bass and loops and Robin Tolleson on drums.Visit:http://www.hipbones.nethttp://www.myspace.com/hipbones4for audio, video, photos and more! Bad long before The Bad Plus, Hip Bones has been called “renegade jazz,” “psychedelic funk,” and “monsters of the mash-up.” It has been written, “These gentlemen push the boundaries of jazz…and get away with it!”Hip Bones’ music combines funk and dub-flavored original instrumentals, along with spirited psychedelic covers from such diverse sources as Jimi Hendrix, The O’Jays, Sting, and Freddie Hubbard. Hip Bones has released two CDs, Threedom and 4. They are working on a new release recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning engineer/producer Bil Vorndick (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Allison Krauss).A trio that plays more like a five-piece, Hip Bones gives jazz a good name, bringing new listeners into the fold each performance with their imagination, irreverence, tasty musical impressions and improvisations. “Together they sound like a band twice their size. They’ve also managed to achieve that prized goal of musicians – a unique sound.” Paul Wertico“It’s one thing to mash-up songs using studio trickery. It’s another to do so onstage with your bare hands, like jazz-funk trio The Hip Bones does.” (Metromix)“Angular melodies, time-twisting rhythmic figures and fluent solos, often over hard-grooving loops. Anyone interested in quality jazz, funk, and world music for that matter, can find plenty of interest in Hip Bones.” (Roanoke Times)“Seriously funky jazz from San Francisco, this all-instrumental trio is all about deeply textured grooves and tight improv, on material from the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bob Marley, and Radiohead.” (Connect Savannah)

Flatland Cavalry - Summertime Love (Official Music Video) Flatland Cavalry - No Shade of Green (Official Music Video) Flatland Cavalry - February Snow (Official Music Video) Flatland Cavalry - A Life Where We Work Out Lyric Video At some point between Lubbock and Midland, the land shifts from endless cotton rows and rich farmland into pump jacks and mesquite tree filled pastures. Lubbock roots-country outfit Flatland Cavalry straddles that line between the Panhandle and the badlands of West Texas with their bright, earthy country ballads and gritty folk ramblers. Vocalist and chief songwriter Cleto Cordero’s honest, smooth songwriting revolves around the vernacular world of West Texas that he’s constructed with dusty, sun-soaked character sketches, brooding self-evaluations, and candid love songs that all have the ability to turn into singalong anthems.

Formed in the fall of 2012, the quintet was rounded up by Cordero after stretches of acoustic outings around the Panhandle town of Lubbock. With guitarist Reid Dillon, fiddler Laura Jane, bassist Jonathan Saenz, and drummer Jason Albers joining Cordero, Flatland quickly garnered the attention of the masses with the release of the debut EP, Come May, in the spring of 2015. Building off the success of Come May, Cordero and company released their full-length follow-up, Humble Folks, in April 2016.

Description:
TRE® (Tension, Stress and Trauma Releasing Exercises®) is a series of simple movements that turn on our body’s natural rebalancing process—typically providing an immediate experience of relaxation. It enables the body to release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and constriction by stimulating a gentle, involuntary, shaking response.TRE® is extremely effective as a stand-alone practice, and it deepens all other stress-relief practices such as mindfulness, yoga and meditation. How Does TRE® Work: TRE® was developed with the understanding that human beings are genetically encoded to contract to protect ourselves during stressful or traumatic situations. After the stressful event has passed, the next phase of the survival cycle is the release of these contractions bringing the body and mind back to an optimal state of balance. However, the way the body releases these contractions is through a reflexive, involuntary shaking and tremoring response. Culturally, we’ve been conditioned to believe that shaking is a sign of weakness. Very early on we learn to unconsciously inhibit this healing response—often by tensing even more. TRE® interrupts incomplete looping defense responses by reactivating this natural healing mechanism-- letting our nervous system know it is now safe to return to a state of balance, relaxation and calm. The first annual BackPack Slam Jam is a concert series to raise money and food through ticket sales and donations for the Backpack program of the No Kid Hungry Foundation of Western North Carolina! It’s for the children who have free or reduced lunches at school, but when they go home for Christmas break their families may not have the money to feed them 3 meals a day. In severe cases the only meal the child gets is the free or reduced breakfast and lunch at school. Our goal is to raise enough money and food so all children of WNC can go home on Christmas Break and have a pantry full of food. That’s one less thing for the family to worry about during this wonderful time of year. 100% of all proceeds go towards the cause!

On October 14, David Bromberg a godfather of Americana, decorated multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, gifted song interpreter and lauded bandmate to the stars - will release 'The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues' (Red House Records). Produced by Levon Helm and Bob Dylans longtime collaborator, Larry Campbell, Brombergs first album since 2013 is a wonderfully curated selection of deep cuts from the blues genre, in addition to original compositions. Bromberg found his inspiration for the album when he heard Willie Nelson repeat a quote from Texas fiddler Johnny Gimble: "there's only two kinds of music - the Star Spangled Banner and the Blues."Through Brombergs unparalleled playing and gift for interpretation, a crack band and Campbells tasteful horn arrangements, the record reaches electrifying heights as well as intimate acoustic moments, breathing fresh life into the songs of Robert Johnson, Bobby Charles, George Little Hat Jones, Ray Charles, and Sonny Boy Williamson, among others.Ray Charles A Fool For You is one of many album stand-outs, featuring just David on a spellbinding solo acoustic guitar performance and vocals. David learned the song Why Are People Like That? from a Muddy Waters record, a song written by one of his favorite writers: Bobby Charles. Bromberg dug deep into recorded music, sometimes finding songs with mysterious origins such as How Come My Dog Dont Bark When You Come Round, or 900 Miles, an old country song imagined as if Howlin Wolf were to play it. Bromberg is an American music icon (Dr. John), and counts Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Garcia, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, The Eagles, and so many more as collaborators, fans and friends. This is Brombergs 18th album, the latest in a solo career that began in 1971 on his self-titled debut. The David Bromberg Quintet will bring their exuberant live show across the east coast this fall, including a trio of Belated Birthday Bashes featuring Tom Rush, Larry Campbell, and Teresa Williams. Suzy Bogguss and Jerry Jeff Walker - Night Rider's Lament (live) Suzy Bogguss - Someday Soon (live) Suzy Bogguss - Letting Go Suzy Bogguss - Hey Cinderella Suzy Bogguss - Drive South - Music Video Outbound Plane Suzy Bogguss didn’t set out to craft a Merle Haggard tribute record. Some might call that serendipity; she just calls it Lucky. “Merle Haggard is a hell of a storyteller,” says Suzy. “When I hear his songs, I feel like I’m listening in on someone’s life.” On her new album, Lucky, a collection of songs all written by Haggard, Suzy does more than just listen—the CMA, ACM and Grammy Award-winning singer makes the country rebel’s compositions her own, reinterpreting classics like “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “Silver Wings” and “Today I Started Loving You Again” from a female point of view.

“Merle is one of the most masculine songwriters I’ve ever heard, and I’ve been watching boys cover his music for years. I just thought, ‘Why couldn’t a girl do this?’” Suzy says.

Turns out, a woman can—especially if that woman is Suzy Bogguss, one of country music’s most pristine and evocative vocalists. With the release of the Illinois native’s 1989 major label debut, Somewhere Between, Suzy quickly became one of the key artists that defined those golden days of ’90s country. She scored a string of Top 10 singles with country radio staples like “Outbound Plane,” “Drive South,” “Hey Cinderella,” “Letting Go” and “Aces,” and her 1991 album of that name was certified platinum. In addition, she scored a trio of gold albums and notched more than 3 million sales.

With Lucky, released on Suzy’s own label Loyal Dutchess, the singer comes full circle, returning yet again to her early inspiration, Haggard—Suzy’s Somewhere Between was titled after a Hag cut.

“My very first song on the radio, ‘Somewhere Between,’ was a Merle Haggard song,” says Suzy, going on to explain the title of Lucky, which she produced with her husband, songwriter Doug Crider. “I was sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper and the word ‘lucky’ jumped out at me. I said, ‘That’s the title of the album.’ Because I feel lucky that I get to know Merle.”

Not that Lucky is a tribute album. Of that, Suzy is adamant.
“I don’t want it to be viewed that way. I had been wanting to make a record based in country and blues and I just kept thinking of great Haggard songs,” Suzy says. “Finally it just made sense to quit denying that what I really wanted was to sing an entire album of Merle songs! I have always looked to great singer/songwriters for SUZY BOGGUSS “Lucky” material outside of my own. These songs are perfect for me at this time in my life.

They just happen to all be written by one guy.

“I didn’t try to imitate Merle, this is my interpretation of his songs,” she continues.

“Besides, Merle is still doing his own thing. He’s hard at work, and people are still lining up around the block to see him.”

Lucky is remarkable in its freshness. Its acoustic-based arrangements, while sparse, crackle with vibrancy. Each song is driven by the perfect marriage of Suzy’s delicate voice and the adventurous, yet tasteful, playing of the band. It’s indicative of what Haggard himself would do in the studio.

“Merle would experiment. He would take his band The Strangers into the studio and they’d be pioneers,” Suzy says. “Each one of Merle’s records sounds fresh and you hear that in these different songs we chose. I really miss that fearlessness today.”

Suzy followed suit. Assembling her own ace band at her home studio—along with an A-team of singer-songwriters, including Jessi Alexander, Matraca Berg, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Gretchen Peters and Jon Randall Stewart, to lend background vocals—she cut a dozen Haggard tunes. They range from the boozy lament “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” and the randy “Let’s Chase Each Other Round the Room” to the somber one-two punch of “You Don’t Have Very Far to Go” and “Someday When Things Are Good.”

“Merle’s songs were on the 8-track player in my dad’s car. Saturday nights when I would drive around with my friends, this was a part of our soundtrack. Back when country music talked about real adult problems and how we deal with them. We felt like we were eavesdropping on the secret lives of our parents,” Suzy says.

“Merle’s songs feel familiar... and slightly dangerous. And there’s not a truck or a bonfire in the batch.

“These are the songs that I related to, that I felt I had a reason to sing,” she continues. “They all had something that I could give them, whether it was a particular passion to a lyric or a melody. Every melody on this whole project is one that I just love as a singer.”

Throughout Lucky, Suzy’s bohemian spirit—for nearly five years, she lived in and traveled the country by camper—is palpable. In “Silver Wings,” she delivers an almost cinematic vocal. “There’s a movie playing in my head when I sing that song,” Suzy admits. “And in many of his songs.”

“Lucky” To further the metaphor, it’s a movie written by Haggard, but directed by Suzy.

One of her goals with the album was to show fans of American music exactly what Merle wrote. “These are meaty melodies, meaty stories,” she says of the songs. “I love sinking my teeth into them.”

And she hopes both her fans who have followed her since the ’90s as well as devotees of Haggard will do likewise.

“What I really wanted to illuminate is not only is this guy awesome to see live and awesome to listen to on his records, but his songs are very relatable for somebody else to communicate to other people,” Suzy says. “Not every artist has music that is as universal as Merle’s. It’s pretty heavy-duty stuff and I think that’s why to so many of us who sing and write songs, he’s such a king among us.

“He really is the poet of the common man.”

Or in this case, an extraordinary woman.

Alien Music Club is essentially an on-going studio project conceived and produced by Jonathan Pearlman (JP) of Asheville, NC.JP grew up hearing light jazz and pop music. His first musical icons were Elvis Presley and Bobby Darin. He was performing for audiences at age seven. He began playing guitar at age nine. JP’s influences are far-reaching, absorbing Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Clapton, and Motown, during the 60’s. Jazz-fusion bands of the early 70’s were also influential, like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Frank Zappa. These became JP’s earliest jazz-rock influences. Other influences include Tom waits, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Donald Fagan, Ian Hunter, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Beck, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, Paul Simon, Todd Rungren and Joe Walsh.JP was continually writing, singing and playing in bands throughout his college years, and he graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Broadcasting in 1978. Fast forward the next 20 years or so, and he had become a successful videographer and producer, all the while pursuing his music. During the 1990’s, JP adopted the pseudonym “Alien Music Club”. The idea of a club came from the desire to incorporate the talents of other musicians and friends in the creative process. The “Alien” concept comes from the wildly eclectic nature of JP’s music, which defies categorization. “It’s really a musical melting pot,” says JP.

Space Jesus aka Jasha Tull is a Brooklyn, NY based electronic music producer. Born and raised in New Jersey, Jasha’s firm roots in hip-hop are apparent in most of his productions. With a focus on bass-line synthesis, commanding beats and futuristic feels, Jasha injects his signature sound on every sub-genre he graces.

With a reputation for his dynamic live performances, Space Jesus recently completed a national tour supporting Break Science. He’s also been handpicked to support Tipper, Big Gigantic, Zeds Dead, Die Antwoord, Rusko, Shpongle, Infected Mushroom and Feed Me, to name a few. Additionally, he’s been granted prime spots at festivals such as Mysteryland USA, (Bethel Woods, NY,) TomorrowWorld, (Atlanta, GA,) Shambhala, (Salmo, BC,) and 710 Cup (Denver, CO,). Mysteryland USA even chose him as a top Emerging Artist and featured him in their Official Mysteryland USA Aftermovie.

Space Jesus’ next full-length album titled Close Encounters will be released Fall 2015 via Brooklyn-label Smokers Cough. This highly anticipated album, arguably his grittiest, most mind bending work to date, blends heavy hip-hop influences with a distinct psychedelic flare. Close Encounters takes listeners on an intense journey through intergalactic gangster truths and crunchy bass textures.

Jasha’s other projects include Schlang with fellow producer Rob Uslan (Supersillyus) and #$ (Hash Money) with New Jersey rapper and long time friend GDP.

Genre: Singer-Songwriter/Folk Rock/Funk RockCover: Donations @ DoorShow: 10PM Ages: 21+Brad ParsonsThus far, 2017 has been kind to Portland-based singer-songwriter, Brad Parsons. This year, Parsons released his first full-length solo album, Hold True, and kicked off his first tour with the Brad Parsons Band. As an Artist-At-Large for this year’s Winter WonderGrass and Northwest String Summit, Parsons has been gaining momentum with audiences across the West with his sincere sound and larger-than-life vocals. Now, the former member of Horse Feathers is capitalizing on that buzz by shifting his focus toward his own solo project, much to the delight of old fans and new.Hold True, his first full-length solo album, was produced by Fruition’s Tyler Thompson and captures the upcoming artist’s genre-bending mix of Americana with, as Parsons describes, “a psychedelic sheen.” The album also features appearances from some of his friends, including all of the members of Fruition, Bevin Foley of Trout Steak Revival, Cody Russell of The Drunken Hearts, and Daniel Lee.web: http://www.bparsonsmusic.com/vid: https://youtu.be/Jjp98Br5uFQStarbirdvid: https://youtu.be/f8gycYzAsbM
