Genre: Americana/Newgrass Cover: $17 ADV // $20 DOS Show: 9PM (8:00PM Doors) Ages: 21+ Larry Keel http://larrykeel.com/ https://www.youtube.com/user/Larrykeelmusic Larry Keel is described by reviewers as the most powerful, innovative and all-out exhilarating acoustic guitarist performing today. Keel has absorbed the best lessons from his Country and Bluegrass family upbringing, both sides deeply steeped in the rich mountain music culture and heritage of Southwest Virginia. From there, he has always integrated that disciplined musical grounding and natural-born talent with his own incomparable approach to playing the guitar and composing original music. He’s also got a knack for choosing interesting and appealing material from all realms of music with guts, whether it’s a tune written by a fellow song-writer/musician friend, or a tasty cover from any number of genres all over the map. The combination is pretty irresistible, and has earned Keel the highest respect and billing among the top acoustic musicians alive, and some now gone: Sam Bush, Del McCoury, Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers), Chance McCoy (Old Crow Medicine Show), Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Vassar Clements, John Hartford, Bill Monroe, Peter Rowan, and Darol Anger to name a few. And his fierce, high-spirited energy also appeals to young rockers, jammers and alt country players and fans who are equally drawn to Keel’s deep rumbling voice, his earthy and imaginative song-writing, and his down-home-gritty-good-time charm. Keel regularly collaborates with Americana giants Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, Infamous Stringdusters, Keller Williams, Steep Canyon Rangers (with Steve Martin), Jorma Kaukonen, David Nelson, Little Feat, Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass, members of String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon, amongst others. Keel has a variety of musical formats swirling around the calendar each year: look out for his core band, The Larry Keel Experience (featuring Will Lee on soulful, blues-grass 5 string banjo, penetrating vocals and exceptional song-writing contributions and Jenny Keel on upright bass, with impeccable timing, solid yet imaginative bass lines and vocal harmonies), Larry Does Jerry (Keel performing the music of Jerry Garcia), Keller Williams and The Keels, Keel paired with artists such as Drew Emmitt, Danny Barnes, Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, and appearing as special guest with a multitude of major acts and artists on the tour circuit. Throughout his career, Keel has released 15 albums and is featured on 10 others. The most recent release, “Experienced” is an entirely original work that showcases both Larry’s and band-mate Will Lee’s exceptional songwriting, singing and jaw-dropping instrumental performances, accompanied by Jenny Keel’s upright bass-playing and harmony vocals. Added to the raw sophistication of Keel’s progressive acoustic style are several guest musician-friends who appear on various tracks: Sam Bush, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Keller Williams, Jason Carter (Del McCoury Band), Mike Guggino (Steep Canyon Rangers) and Anders Beck (Greensky Bluegrass Band) In addition to his performing and recording work, Keel also plays host to a special music event concept, ‘Fishin and Pickin’, which combines 2 unique but thoroughly complementary pleasures: the satisfying thrill of sports fishing, and the energizing intensity of live music, all conducted in all-inclusive style settings hosted on live water properties. There, experienced musicians teach every level of acoustic instrument players how to advance their musical ‘chops’ , while also having the chance to catch some big fish in the process. Bass and Grass takes place in Georgia each year in the fall, always with a fantastic roster of musician-instructors, and outstanding bass fishing! Similarly, there have been memorable events at Trout and Tunes featuring fly-fishing styles and mountain-music study and entertainment set in the misty mountains of West Virginia. More destinations on tap: The Salmon and Henry’s Fork Rivers in Idaho and the Maury River in Rockbridge County VA. There’s no end to the places Keel wants to play music in and fish, with like-minded folks! For Keel the musical mission is always clear: to let technical skill and excellence, honest emotion and fearlessness connect the playing and singing to audiences, to entertain and to thoroughly enjoy the experience of creating and sharing in music.

WHERE: The Altamont Theatre, 18 Church St, AshevilleWHEN: Saturday April 15, 2017DOORS: 7pm | SHOW: 8pmGENRE: comedy / country music satireAGES: all agesSEATS: seated general admissionTICKETS: $20 ga / $30 VIP (guaranteed seat in 1st 3 rows)WEB LISTING: http://thealtamonttheatre.com/event/doyle/Doyle and Debbie:WEBSITE: www.doyleanddebbie.comSEE A VIDEO: https://youtu.be/ol2q9VgS-NkThe Doyle and Debbie Show is sublime parody, simultaneously lampooning and idolizing country music's tradition of iconic duos and their subsequent battle of the sexes. Bruce Arntson and Jenny Littleton wield the vocals of vintage country stars and the acting chops of Broadway veterans, taking audiences on a freewheeling joyride through a wickedly funny script and slew of equally hilarious original songs. Over the past eight years, Doyle and Debbie have developed a rabid cult following in Nashville, many of whom have seen the show over a dozen times—everyone from theater-going professionals to college students who wouldn't be caught dead in a theater or a country bar."...a gloriously tacky send-up of a washed-up country duo." - The New York Times"Brilliant". "The last time I laughed anywhere close to this hard was at "The Book of Mormon." "...hilarious. Drop-dead funny." - Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune"90 minutes of goofy perfection — clever, hilarious, wacky and brilliantly performed..." - Chicago Sun-Times"Bruce Arntson and Jenny Littleton are nothing short of fabulous" - Chicago Reader"...hilarious piece of low-brow inspiration turned into high entertainment." - Nashville Scene"The Doyle and Debbie Show is a brilliant musical revue that should be seen more than once." - The Tennessean"It is akin to George and Tammy doing a night at the Grand Ol' Opry - only on mescaline." - Austin Onstage "It's hilarious in the manner of Spinal Tap's tour in the mockumentary and just as spot-on in satirizing a musical genre's styles and sensibilities (or lack thereof)."- Austin Chronicle"Bruce Arntson (Doyle), who wrote or co-wrote the songs, and Jenny Littleton (Debbie) inhabit their characters with near-creepy perfection."- Austin American-Statesman"Littleton has a terrific voice that can evoke everyone from Patsy Cline to Dolly Parton." - The City Paper"Littleton and Arntson have breathtaking singing and acting talents."- The Tennessean"Arntson appears here with train-wreck curiosity, wondering just how deeply he'll dare to venture into his psychological black hole."- Nashville Scene"Littleton is talented as usual, using her coyly flexible voice to solid comic effect even when she's singing things straight-ahead. Arntson is often flat-out brilliant, inhabiting his frighteningly lifelike character with a passion and intensity worthy of the country entertainers he lampoons. His tongue-twisting delivery of the show's closing number is masterful." - Nashville Scene"In its raising of lowbrow Southern culture to the level of something approaching art, "Doyle and Debbie" can be enjoyed on more than one level, but the songs put it way over the top. In a good way." - Austin American Statesman"The Doyle & Debbie Show is like Spinal Tap with a twang, and it manages to tweak and tickle without ever denigrating country music." - Peter Cooper - The Tennessean"A great script, supremely clever songs and two extraordinarily talented performers make this show worth seeing again and again." - The Tennessean"It's the greatest thing I've ever seen!" - David Auburn, Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning author of "Proof"."I laughed so hard I thought I was going to throw up. And I don't laugh very easily...I'm very critical. But 'Doyle and Debbie' is so funny it's worth getting on a plane to see." - Ron White, comedian

Description:

Southern Culture On The Skids has been spreading the rock and roll gospel since since they formed in Chapel Hill, NC in1983. Guitarist/singer Rick Miller, drummer Dave Hartman and bassist/singer/heartbreaker Mary Huff, play a greasy mix of surf, rockabilly, R&B and country-fried garage with a side of psych, all the while driving fans into ecstatic, sweat-drenched paroxysms of joy. Its a musical gumbo Miller calls, Americana from the wrong side of the tracks. The band has been prolific and ubiquitous for over thirty years, touring everywhere from the North Carolina Prison System to Mt. Fuji, Japan and delivering what Rolling Stone calls a hell raising rock and roll party. In 2014 the band was honored by the Southern Folk Life Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with an exhibition featuring their music and cultural contributions. The flame-adorned La-Z-Boy from the cover of their Plastic Seat Sweat LP now resides at UNC-CH!Southern Culture On The Skids' newest album, The Electric Pinecones, was released on September 16, 2016. It's the bands fifth album on their own label, Kudzu Records. The album features 12 original SCOTS tunes 11 brand new songs and a whole-lotta NOLA remake of the SCOTS classic, Swamp Fox - The Original. All the tunes were produced and recorded at Ricks studio in NC, The Kudzu Ranch. The Electric Pinecones is a bit of a departure for the band conceptually and sonically. The inspiration for the record was born in an alter-ego side project from the early years of the band. The Pinecones was folk-ahill-a-billy garage band we used to put together just for kicks, Miller relates. We loved the sound of '60s west coast folk rock and psych bands. The Pinecones was our outlet for material that was not in the SCOTS vein. We even opened for ourselves occasionally. The Pinecones set list was the jumping off point for this latest collection of songs. The first single off the album, Grey Skies, is a minor key mood piece with that folk-a-billy, psychedelic sound. Listen to how the acoustic 12-string riff slides into the bands hypnotic rhythms that propel Mary Huffs reflective vocal into the minds eye of times past and love lost. Check out the Mellotron on the chorus that is a first for us, Miller says. The lead off track, Freak Flag, is more upbeat, but no less tweaked, with modulating guitars riding on pounding drums after the first verse. The songs message is a good one it is okay to be different and always respect yourself. The band debuted the song to an auditorium full of rowdy students at Carrboro Elementary School. I was nervous, Miller says if the kids dont like something they let you know, but when they started singing along with the second chorus and waving their imaginary freak flags in the air, I knew it was a hit!Dirt Road is Marys three-minute ode to sances, thunderstorms and good lovin long gone. The song is abackwoods southern gothic ghost story that opens with a big tom fill then twists and turns around a folky strum and a fuzz guitar. Marys spooky-good vocal takes it down that dirt road way back into the piney woods. The album also has some country rock songs that highlight the melodic side of SCOTS, with Baby I Like You, I Aint Gonna Hang Around and Given To Me featuring some of the best harmonies Rick and Mary have ever recorded.Waiting On You is the longest song on the album, coming in at 4:22; its a folk-garage-rocker with a singa-long chorus that segues into a surf raga breakdown before heading back to the big riff and out.The album has traditional Southern Culture flavor too. Check out the remake of Swamp Fox The Original. This take goes back to the beginnings of the song and is much closer to capturing the essence of the many all-nighters the band pulled in NOLA with friends and colleagues. The country funk of Rice and Beans, is a good humored tale of a cash strapped southern courtship, and Midnight Caller is Marys slinky RnB flavored woman-to-woman warning about bad men looking for good times.Song for song, on The Electric Pinecones, Southern Culture On The Skids continues to blow minds and blur the lines between genres delivering a stellar album. From their 1985 debut Voodoo Beach Party, to their 1988 international smash, Dirt Track Date (featuring the hit single "Camel Walk"), and now to the SCOTSified tunes of The Electric Pinecones, 30+ years, 200+ songs and 1,000,000+ road miles in, Southern Culture On The Skids just continues to get better with time.

"No band in town or anywhere is wrecking melodies as efficiently as this bizarro grunge-land band right now. On "So Hard," Pile flirts with about a dozen shards of anthem-worthy melodies in about two minutes before retreating into a haze, and diving into the monolithic riffs of "The Browns." The layered chords are thick with dissonance, the asymmetrical beats tumble like drum sets tossed down the stairs, and every wry vocal feeds on playground bipolar outbursts. Sounds like a recipe for force-fed weirdness, but these crooked moves unfold like clockwork." The Boston Globe

Ages 18+

Named in honor of the song by bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, acoustic funk-popsters Jump, Little Children formed at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where founding members Jay Clifford (vocals, guitar), Ward Williams (cello) and brothers Matt (harmonica, accordion, mandolin) and Evan Bivins (drums) were originally studying classical music. Influenced by a friend from Dublin, they began playing traditional Irish folk music in their spare time, increasingly drawing influence from Delta blues as well; eventually, the group quit school to focus on performing full-time, even gigging in Ireland in 1992 before returning to the U.S. and settling in Boston. There Jump, Little Children began writing and performing original material, and in the spring of 1994 they relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, adding upright bassist Jonathan Gray and building a grass-roots following through their extensive street-corner performances and club dates. Turning increasingly towards pop, the band released their independent debut The Licorice Tea Demos in 1995; the Buzz EP followed in 1997, and soon after Jump, Little Childrensigned to Atlantic, issuing Magazine the following year.

Description:
Overview The Certified Scrum Product Owner course is a two-day, interactive class introducing the concepts of Agile business leadership using the Scrum framework. Successful participants will become Certified Scrum Product Owners, a first step in the journey towards a more adaptive form of business leadership. This course is based on over 24 years of industry experience, including nearly 10 years of experience in the role of Product Owner/Agile Customer and teaching/mentoring others in this role. Though each Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) course varies depending on the instructor, all CSPO courses focus on Scrum from a product owner's perspective. Graduates will receive the CSPO designation. All CSPO courses are taught by Certified Scrum Trainers.   Audience This course is designed for team members and managers involved in projects who may assume the Product Owner role. This is often a product manager, business analyst or business sponsor. In large organizations, it is recommended that Directors and Vice Presidents who oversee IT projects or functional areas also participate.   Prerequisites Participants must have knowledge of Scrum by reading one of the Scrum introduction books or other self-study. A basic understanding of Scrum is assumed. Previous experience on a Scrum project is desirable.   Goals Prepare participants to effectively participate on projects using Scrum and to assume the Product Owner role. View the CSPO Content Outline and Learning Objectives.    Format The course is primarily exercises and discussions with some lecture to define terms and concepts. Ample time is available to learn from real experiences on real projects from the instructor’s experience as a product owner and from teaching and coaching Scrum teams.   Course Agenda   Product Vision - A clear, shared vision is crucial for successful agile teams. We'll walk through three techniques to help unify your team, stakeholders, and customers around the right vision for your product or service: "We're #1!" - boiling your product vision down to its essence Product Differentiation - what makes your product unique, different and better Collaborating on Product Vision - use the Product Box Innovation Game for a collaborative discussion about your vision   Agile Roadmapping - Roadmaps are an important link between vision and the product backlog. Unfortunately, many roadmaps are a slide with a date and some bullet pointed features, which doesn't provide any context. Learn how to create a rich, easily updated agile roadmap that gives the right amount of context to help stakeholders and team members understand where we might be headed and why. Learn how to use the Prune the Product Tree Innovation Game to collaborate with customers on your road map.   Product Backlog Basics - Learn the rules for a Scrum Product Backlog as well as a set of key practices for using the Product Backlog to help ensure consensus on what we are building. Product Backlog Basics Writing User Stories Vertically Slicing User Stories Acceptance Criteria Backlog Refinement    Prioritization - The core of the Product Owner's job is to prioritize among the many great things we could do and help the team focus only on what is most important to do first. Traditional techniques like Kano and market research are too slow for most agile teams, so many product owners prioritize solely on gut feel or by responding to the currently squeakiest wheel. Learn a prioritization framework that helps you visualize the relative importance of your customer segments, internal & external stakeholders, corporate strategy, and maintaining a clean code base. Use the Buy a Feature Innovation Game to collaborate with customers on priority.   Agile Release Planning - Believe it or not, I've heard many times the misinformed statement: "We're agile, so we don't really plan." Not only is this not in line with Agile values, which state "We value Responding to Change over Following a Plan", it is usually just bad business. The Agile value does not mean that we do not plan, but that we create a plan but then expect it to change as we start working on it! Learn the nuts and bolts of creating an Agile release plan Learn how and when to update the release plan   Working in Sprints - the Product Owner job doesn't end once the Product Backlog is ready for sprint planning. Your team will be most effective if you are available during the sprint to provide feedback at key points.  Learn the Product Owner role during the sprint   What You Get A printed copy of all course materials A one-year membership in the Scrum Alliance Recognition by the Scrum Alliance as a Certified Scrum Product Owner   Cancellation Policy:  In order to receive a refund of your tuition for this class you must notify us no later than 5 business days prior to the class start date. Cancellation requests received after the 5 business day window will be issued a credit that can be applied towards a future class.   Instructor   Jason Tanner  Jason is the CEO of Applied Frameworks, a product management consulting firm. Jason mentors, teaches, facilitates and sometimes does the work to identify and apply the optimal frameworks for given situations. Lately he’s been focused on very large scale Agile adoptions and overcoming all of the obstacles thousands of people encounter when their world of work shifts. TWO-TIME GRAMMY® Award Winners, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer celebrate their 45th recording, GET UP & DO RIGHT. They are master musicians with a career spanning over 35 years. Their superb harmonies are backed by instrumental virtuosity on the guitar, five-string banjo, ukulele, mandolin, cello-banjo, and many other instruments. An eclectic folk festival on their own terms, their repertoire ranges from classic country to western swing, gypsy jazz to bluegrass, and old-time string band to contemporary folk including some original gems. Their versatility defies a brief description, perhaps “well rounded Americana” does it best. “As close to flawless folk/bluegrass as it gets.” — Billboard Magazine

Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown showed an affinity for music at an early age. Discovering a guitar in his grandparent's attic at age seven, he spent the next several years woodshedding with records and the radio. Junior was also able to tap into music he couldn't hear at home which older, college aged kids were listening to. This was possible as a result of his father's employment at a nearby campus in 1958. Armed with this broad spectrum of source material, he had developed some formidable chops by the end of his teen years.Brown's passion for Country and Western music had intensified by the late 1960's. With many prominent figures as his inspiration, he spent his nights further sharpening his musical skills in small clubs across the southwest. "I played more nights in honkytonks during the 70's and 80's than most musicians will see in a lifetime...I did so many years of that, night after night, four sets a night, 15 minute breaks; I mean after that, you gotta get good or get out." Brown still prefers to refer to his favorite music as "Country and Western" as it was called when he began his career. More recently, however, with the exception of Classical, Modern Jazz and Rap, he has shown himself to be equally adept at virtually all styles of American music, leading many to dub him America's most versatile musician. A listen to his catalog of recordings reveals a virtuosity in Country, Western Swing, Hawaiian, Rock and Roll, (Hard Rock, Surf, etc.), Blues, Trad. Jazz, (Swing), Pop, Bluegrass, and even Mariachi.Junior knew he could play and sing almost anything, but he had yet to explore his potential as a songwriter. "I realized no one was going to walk into a club and discover me...so I started hanging out with some songwriters who I'd played some gigs with, and they showed me how to support myself by writing and publishing." With his songwriting coming together by the mid 80's, Brown upgraded his gear in a way that no artist had ever done. Struggling through each show with the back and forth switch between the six string guitar and its steel counterpart, he had a dream one night about the two instruments mysteriously melting into one. The result was Brown's unique invention, the "Guit-Steel", a double-necked guitar combining standard guitar with steel guitar, allowing him to switch instruments quickly in mid-song while singing. There are other Guit-Steel players now, but Junior was the first, and for many years the one and only. For this and other reasons, he is truly an American original. In the early 90's Brown and his band (including wife, Tanya Rae) relocated to the fertile Austin, Texas music scene and landed a weekly gig at the Continental Club. His unique and entertaining combination of singing, songwriting, instrumental skills and producing led to a seven record deal with Curb Records that began with "Twelve Shades of Brown" in 1993. He later released two albums on the Telarc label.

The music of Steely Dan is a perfect vehicle for Kung Fu. Best described from The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock And Roll – “Less a band than a concept, Steely Dan was one of the most advanced, successful, and mysterious pop units of the 1970s. Combining pop hooks with jazz harmonies, complicated time changes and cryptic, often highly ironic lyrics, the band sounded like no one else.” Kung Fu’s virtuoso collective of musicians create a fun and exciting action-packed fusion experience. The Steely Dan catalogue will be a unique journey for fans of the Fu. They tested the waters 2 years ago at their annual Toys For Tots Benefit by recreating a full rendition of Steely Dan’s album “The Royal Scam” while inviting original members of the band to join in the performance.

Foxygen and Star Power is the Los Angeles songwriting duo of 24-year-olds Sam France and Jonathan Rado. In May 2011, France and Rado nervously handed off a CD-R of this homemade mini-opus Take the Kids Off Broadway (Jagjaguwar, 2012) to producer and visionary Richard Swift after his performance in a Lower East Side club. The duo, who had just mixed and burned the disc that very night, had been devotees of Swift’s outsider-pop oeuvre since high school, when they first began recording their own pubescent forays into oddball rock n’ roll (At least a dozen records were finished before they graduated high school).

Foxygen left the venue that night unsure whether Swift would truly listen or sling the disc into a dumpster on his way out. You’re reading this right now because Swift did listen. In fact, he fucking flipped for Foxygen’s bugged out, esoteric majesty and called upon them immediately to say as much. Eight months later, Foxygen was holed up for a week-long recording session at Swift’s neo-legendary National Freedom studio, creating what became their breakthrough, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic (Jagjaguwar, 2013), a precocious and cocksure joyride across California psychedelia.

2013 saw the mercurial success of 21st Century, and with it, heightened demands for tour planning, added press days, demands on resources, the sacrifice of personal relationships, and the indefinite delay of recording plans. The quick-fire success made for an altogether turbulent 2013 for the band. Foxygen’s always captivating live performances shifted from eruptive to sometimes frightening — and then, just put on ice altogether. But at the close of 2013, France and Rado found secret sanctuary in their new studio, Dream Star, and holing up in some of LA’s most famous hotels for more recording. Writing music together is what their friendship has always thrived upon. At Dream Star in the northernmost passage of LA’s valley, they reformed as a punk band called Star Power. And the result, the svelte, 82-minute …And Star Power, is a morphing, splice-and-paste journey through soft rock indulgences, psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, D&D doomrock, and paranoid bathroom rompers. Foxygen, now expanded into a 9-piece touring machine as Star Power, calls the album “a cinematic, auditory adventure for the speedy freaks, skull krunchers, abductees, and misfits…the radio station you can only hear if you believe.”

In addition to their wildly innovative original music, The Reality brings their same flair to cover classics such as "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Three Little Birds", and "Little Wing" and modern hits like "Uptown Funk", "Suit and Tie" and "The Walk", making them perfect for your event! Just click play and find out what The Reality is all about. Band Members: Dan Jones- Fueled by Cuban coffee, Florida orange juice, and medicinal herbs, you’ll catch this lead singer/songwriter/guitarist occasionally even sporting a trombone during the shows. Widely known in Ybor City (Tampa’s historic district) as the player to see for a number of reasons. His skills and knowledge of music and his instrumental prowess put him on another level of artistry completely. But beyond that, Dan’s passion for music and his clearly evident love of playing is what you really take home. The way he communicates a variety of emotions and color via sound is truly artistic and inspirational. Caleb Bone- Another rare Florida native, Caleb takes the smooth, melodic bass lines of Flea, Pino Palladino and Victor Wooten, and combines that with classic slap tones made by Les Claypool and Marcus Miller. In addition to his skills on his instrument, he is a 4 time Florida All-State singer. Making him “One of the best double-threats in the touring business” Dan stated. He also went on to say “I am truly blessed to be working with who I whole-heartedly believe are some of the best musicians in the area.” Caleb sings warm and rich harmonies with Dan’s melodies while simultaneously playing extremely intricate and innovative bass lines. Logan Charles III- Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Logan brings that Motown funk that gives the band its backbone. In a word, Logan Charles III or “LC” is awesome. In several words, this man has some serious chops on the drums, he could literally play all day. In addition to being one of Florida’s favorite drummers to dance to, LC can play very in-depth keyboard solos while keeping the drums going at the same time. “It is hard for me to process when I’m watching him do it live, I almost forget to play sometimes” Caleb stated after a late night studio session. Once you see it live, you’ll understand why. web: http://www.music4pina.com/ vid: https://youtu.be/kcg0xV4v1fE

If Turnpike Troubadours are playing in your town, youll know it. A block or two from the venue, youll see the crowds lining up. Get closer and youll start to hear the music -- rockin hard, lashed by burnin fiddle and guitar, maybe a little rough on the edges but with a deep-rooted soul that's impossible to resist. And if you make it through the door, youll witness one of the best shows you'll ever see.Audiences in their home state of Oklahoma and down in Texas have known this for years. It's no longer news when they draw 5,000-plus at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth, sell out three nights in a row at Gruene Hall or turn several hundred away at the Legendary Stubb's Bar-B-Q in Austin. Word has spread, though: Their shows in Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere have pulled in more than 1,000 fans. And theyve drawn full houses at Joes Pub in New York and The Troubadour in L.A., among many other nightspots from coast to coast.Theyve even been picked by Playboy as one of three acts to watch in 2015 -- a distinction lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Evan Felker admits is pretty bizarre but impressive nonetheless. So is that the story? The Turnpike Troubadours Tear It Up Night After Night? Actually, no. Theres another side to singer/guitarist Felker, bassist RC Edwards, fiddler Kyle Nix, steel and electric guitarist Ryan Engleman and drummer Gabe Pearson. Maybe you dont notice it as much at their shows, where their blazing performances tend to obliterate detached reflection. But youll definitely notice it on their new album, The Turnpike Troubadours, to be released September 18th on their Bossier City imprint. Away from the intensities of their show, the music speaks more intimately. Details of their arrangements clarify. Above all, the lyrics become the center of attention, spinning stories so compelling that you realize youd almost forgotten how powerful the message of a song could be.Theres 7 Oaks, recounting a life made desperate by poverty, made more vivid by an incongruous hoedown accompaniment Bossier City, focused on a sad mill worker who blows his pay regularly on gambling and booze The Bird Hunters, a short story set to a Cajun waltz about friendship, love and coming home Down Here, a conversation between one guy who has lost all he had and another who assures him life "down here" really isnt so bad How Do You Fall Out Of Love, a melancholy meditation on lost love.Dig deeper into the words and bits of brilliant craftsmanship gleam: Hillbilly girl, as sweet as wine, grew up in the thicket like a muscadine. Robbies got a brand new girlfriend. Shes got to strip for pills. I left my heart in Tulsa on the corner of Easton & Main on the Cains Ballroom floor, soaking up a bourbon stain. You bet your heart on a diamond and I played the clubs and the spades. We gambled and lost. Yes, we both paid the cost. Look what a mess I have made.Human beings like stories, Felker insists. It doesnt matter what form, whether it be a song or a movie or a poem. And theyve always been drawn to characters. Our songs are real life applied to stories applied back to real life. I might get a plot line from several short stories Ive read. Then Ill build fallible characters into the midst of all that. Theyre never archetypes. Theyre real. Its all about the character. In fact, characters are so central to the Turnpike Troubadours that they often turn up in more than one song. On The Turnpike Troubadours, for instance, the narrator in Down Here, Danny, turns up again in The Bird Hunters.Stephen King has this canon of characters and any of them can walk into one of his stories at any time, Felker says. You have all these characters living in the same universe. I havent ever seen that applied to songwriting, but thats what Im doing. This universe feels real on The Turnpike Troubadours because the band resolved to let the album happen on its own time. Moving out to the Prairie Sun recording complex in the desert country of Cotati, California, setting up in former chicken coops converted into studios, they metaphorically unplugged the clock and worked studiously through 12-hour sessions, wrapping up only when each story and every note rang true. "This album sounds like us at our best," Edwards says. "We weren't going for being overproduced. What we got was exactly what we wanted because we didn't have that time factor problem."And this is the paradox of the Turnpike Troubadours: Do they sound their best when they're delivering another electrifying live show or when they've crafted an artful album, enriched by a narrative tradition that traces back to their fellow Oklahoman Woody Guthrie, in which every nuance tells a story unto itself? Honestly, the band doesn't worry much about that."The show is about people having fun," Felker says. "The more fun they have, the more fun we have and the better off everybody is. The record is about understanding the poetry in a real way. I figure it's like people sitting around in their house, maybe drinking a beer. That's more the place for poetry.""Our sound comes from playing country music, punk rock and anything else we liked in honky-tonks and beer joints," Edwards adds. "You've got to give the crowd something to dance to and have a good time. But songwriters are the most important thing. So I think everything we've done says that you can have it both ways."The proof is on The Turnpike Troubadours and at whatever place they're playing down the road near you. Think of them as a two-headed silver dollar; on both sides, you've got a winner.

Genre: Indie/AltCover: $12 ADV // $15 DOS Doors: 9pmAges: 21+ The Hip Abduction Sometimes inspiration strikes from the immersion of living in a far away place. The view of the ocean. The sound of a rainforest at sunrise. The smell of an open-air market. The embrace of the wild human experience. However, maybe the nostalgia for a certain place might be attributed instead to a feeling, or a time, or even a person. Sometimes, inspiration stems from a place that everyone can relate to, but maybe no one’s actually been. This is the music of The Hip Abduction, the vibrant St. Petersburg, FL-based collective that formed over a mutual appreciation for West African and early Jamaican reggae/dub music. The Hip Abduction began through informal jam sessions and quickly coalesced into a sound that attracted national attention. For Gold Under the Glow, the band’s third full album released on March 11, 2016, THA engage an indie pop acumen alongside a highly emotive and roots driven sound. Recorded in Nashville, Gold Under the Glow was produced by Dabney Morris (Wild Cub) who is credited with incorporating synth-pop teeth into the band’s global foundation and summery vibe. It’s a smart blending of world pop and club aesthetics that appeals to both audiences. The Hip Abduction featuring David New (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Powers (bass), Dave Johnson (baritone and tenor sax), Sean Fote (keyboards), Matt Poynter (drums, vocals), John Holt III (kamale ngoni, guitar, vocals), and Pat Klemawesch (kamale ngoni, guitar, vocals) have shared stages with the likes of Grace Potter, Ziggy Marley, Umphrey’s McGee, Thievery Corporation, Matisyahu, 311, Galactic, and Moon Taxi, and has performed at Shaky Knees, FloydFest, Wanee Music Festival, Suwanee Hulaween, Deep Roots Mountain Revival, Sunfest, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Tropical Heatwave Music Festival, The BIG What? and more. Watch out for more festival plays in 2017 including Jam Cruise and Sweetwater 420 Fest as well as coast to coast dates. Fans should also be on the lookout for surf footage and travel photos from this Florida coastline collective. web: http://thehipabduction.com/vid: https://youtu.be/NUVvj29Kac8 Mobley Cutting vocals in the woods behind his college dorm. Mixing in the backseat of a sedan. Sneaking into the music department after hours to teach himself to play new instruments (and sneaking out before the faculty arrived in the morning). From the start, Mobley's work has been marked by solitude, ingenuity, and a drive that could only be called obsessive. Whether you experience his music on record or at one of his live shows (on stage, he's electric), the passion is palpable. Mobley grew up all over the world, from the Spanish Mediterranean to the California coast. Perhaps it's because of this itinerant childhood that he finds it so hard to sit still. Over the last few years, he's composed dozens of pieces for stage and television (with placements on HBO, Fox, and NBC), played 200+ national tour dates (with the likes of Phantogram, JUNGLE, Mutemath, Robert Delong, & Wavves and at festivals like SXSW, CMJ, Savannah Stopover and Float Fest), and recorded (then scrapped) two whole albums in pursuit of the songs that would become his forthcoming full-length debut, Fresh Lies. Mobley wrote, produced, and played every instrument on the album. The music -- which Mobley calls "post-genre pop" -- defies easy classification, drawing liberally (often simultaneously) from an array of musical traditions. He's equally at home on a playlist next to The Weeknd and TV on the Radio alike, while his electronic, dub-dabbling production style calls to mind the intricate work of artists like James Blake and Thom Yorke. This summer and fall, he's touring as a one-man band, singing and playing keys, guitar, bass, drums, and samplers. He's spanning the United States and Mexico in support of his newest EP release, Some Other Country, out now on Violent Films.web: http://mobleywho.com/vid: https://youtu.be/PjD1xH5GyKU

Hot Rhythm & Blues & Jazz from New Orleans to get your feet stompin’ Forged out of the lively street music scene in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the members of the Roamin’ Jasmine found one another busking under the swampy Louisiana sun, along the banks of the Mississippi, or after hours in storefronts on Royal, Frenchmen and Decatur Streets. Inspired by the city’s history of ethnic and musical diversity, and fresh out of music school at University of Miami’s, bassist, vocalist, and bandleader Taylor Smith began to collect some of his favorite old blues, jazz, and country tunes, while also composing some of his own songs. Arranging this collection for a six piece jazz ensemble and giving them a healthy dose of New Orleans flavor, he decided to share his work with some like-minded colleagues, and bring it to the streets of New Orleans. The Roamin’ Jasmine repertoire explores 1920’s era speakeasy blues, vintage Calypso from Trinidad, seminal 1950’s New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, and original compositions, all set to traditional jazz instrumentation with original arrangements. Through polyphonic collective improvisation inherent in their new homeland of New Orleans, the Roamin’ Jasmine hold true to a great New Orleans jazz tradition while participating in its evolution with undertones of different eras and places. “There’s an art to making a quartet sound like a much bigger band and the Roamin’ Jasmine are masters of it…This is music to remind you that the New Orleans tradition is still very much alive and that even the most grizzled of Crescent City tunes, with their origins spread all over the Deep South and the Caribbean, can be reinvigorated to have both the character that comes with age and the effervescence of youth.” -Rob Adams, Folk and Jazz Critic, The Herald Scotland “In crisp suits they performed a kind of lesser-known American songbook of gems, such as ‘That’s a Pretty Good Love’ by Big Maybell, and vintage Calypso offerings. The band performed as if their horns and strings were on fire, but they were trying to be polite about it. Lead singer Taylor Smith’s voice sounds like its been dragged through a blackberry patch, at once thorny and sweet” – Alli Marshall, Mountain Xpress, Asheville, NC

Y&T

Event Date: 04/21/2017   Event Time: 8:00 PM

Description:

Before Mtley Cre, before RATT, even before there was a Metallica, Y&T was slogging away in sweaty rock clubs around America. When the band formed in the early 1970s, little did they know they would set the standard for hard rock bands that trailed. Many of the biggest acts of the '80s became popular opening for headliners Y&Tand cut their teeth on the band, as evidenced by the Y&T mentions in tell-all books by acts such as Metallica and Mtley Cre. Born in Oakland, California, Y&T is one of the San Francisco Bay Area's own innovators of the hard rock sound. World-renowned headliners on their own, the band also remained the most requested support act on the hard rock road, touring with icons Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Mtley Cre, and more. Whether performing to a festival crowd of fifty-thousand or in an intimate nightclub, Y&T's high-energy set still captivates legions of fans around the globe, proving Y&T's music timeless.Originally formed as Yesterday and Today, the initial powerhouse quartetfeaturing Dave Meniketti (lead guitar/lead vocals), Phil Kennemore (bass), Leonard Haze (drums), and Joey Alves (rhythm guitar)tore through the '70s and '80s with their own brand of hard rock. After two '70s albums on London Records, they shortened their name to Y&T and released eight albums on A&M in the '80s. Two more albums with Geffen Records marked an era of change with Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper, Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth) on drums and Stef Burns (Alice Cooper, Berlin, Huey Lewis) on guitar. With a discography of 18 albums and three greatest hits collections, Y&T has sold over four million albums since their 1974 inception. The band received extensive airplay with hits such as Forever, Rescue Me, Mean Streak, and Summertime Girlswhich played in heavy rotation on MTV. Y&T songs have been featured in a multitude of movies and television shows, including Real Genius, Out of Bounds, Baywatch, and Hunter. After five top 100 albums, songs that tipped into the 40s, two Bammie Awards, and many international television appearances, Y&T's hits are still played on VH1 Classic and classic rock radio stations everywhere. In 2010, Y&T recorded their first studio album in 13 years, featuring original members Dave Meniketti and Phil Kennemore, with longtime members John Nymann on guitar and Mike Vanderhule on drums.

There's only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Brave Combo and Ani DiFranco, collaborations such as Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin or bands he's fronted, including Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for 25 years now.Pulling from an arsenal of musicians Dillon has played with and known over the years, he will be touring with some of the "baddest" musicians on the planet including Claude Coleman Jr. (Ween), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Doug Belote (Ernie K. Doe), Andre Chomondeley (Project Object), James SIngleton (James Booker) , Patrick McDevitt (Band Of Outsiders), Johnny Vidacovich (Professor Longhair), JJ Jungle (The Coup), David Butler (American Babies), Brad Houser (Critters Buggin), Robb Kidd (Papa Mali), and many more.Dillon's most recent recording Band of Outsiders was crafted at Studio Center in Miami with the help of co-producers Gary Vandy and Richard Maloney Jr. Vandy is an old school engineer whose work includes over 200 platinum records predominantly in the disco and dance genres. His love of Zappa is what attracted him to Dillon’s work. In the age of pro-tools chicanery, the production is straightforward, capturing Dillon and his band playing live in a room.“Two tours of Mexico and a steady dose of Brazilian music was the jumping off point for these new songs,” explains Dillon. “Add our love for The Melvins, Deerhoof, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Trouble Funk and all things New Orleans and this album surpasses our intention to make the freakiest, most vibrant dance music on the planet.”Lyrically speaking, Mike Dillon draws from his love of Miguel de Cervantes, William Burroughs, Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Anton Wilson to tell stories of New Orleans debauchery mixed with age-old themes of travel, love, self-destruction and greed. Delivered with Dillon’s trademark vocal rasp, the record has the intensity of a Tom Waits-meets-Frank Zappa black comedy. Rumor has it that Dillon lived in the same apartment that Waits shared with Rickie Lee Jones for the past seven years. However, Dillon discounts those rumors: "This apartment has housed dudes from Morning 40 Federation, Ani DiFranco, an old Conga player and a bunch of heroin addicts.”Taken in its entirety, Mike Dillon's Band of Outsiders is a snapshot of four musicians hitting full stride. Having relentlessly toured the country in 2013—both headlining and opening for artists like Fishbone, Clutch, Primus and Galactic—its 13 songs bristle with a group mind, spill over the sides with the visions invoked during countless dead-of-night drives crisscrossing the country in a van and hit their target with a sonic assault only possible from a band that’s played 400-plus shows over the last two years.“People are always trying to figure out how to describe our music. Maybe we should call it New Orleans punk jazz Brazilian math rock? It’s a gumbo of tribal percussion, The Meters, old school hardcore, Brazil, hard bop and anything else that might move us,” concludes Dillon. “But you know, I really don’t care what you call it. We kick out the jams harder than anyone, and we also know when to heed the lessons of The Minutemen's Double Nickels On The Dime and keep things straight to the point. There’s a reason we called the record what we did. We’re the living, breathing definition of a band of outsiders, but together we deliver simple majestic beauty, let’s leave it at that.”amandla:WEBSITE: www.amandlanet.netHEAR SOME MUSIC: https://soundcloud.com/amandlanetSEE A VIDEO: https://youtu.be/-KARe1tu0CcAmandla is the music and group of Claude Coleman Jr., familiarly known as the perversely versatile, original drummer for the group Ween. His 25-year discography stretches across an eclectic array of artists and players throughout the NY/NJ area and beyond.Amandla is CCJ as singer-songwriter. On record he is performing on all instruments, engineering and producing. Live, he is Amandla’s frontman and guitarist. Coleman’s song career began in 1989 with the band Skunk. Signed to TwinTone Records in Minneapolis, MN. Skunk’s second release Laid (1991) featured three Coleman-penned tracks including the slow falsetto burner I Think I Don’t Mind, later re-recorded for debut Amandla release, Falling Alone (2001). Falling Alone was a contextual portrait of Coleman’s influences, jumping categories around alt-rock-soul-folk-psychedelic exploration. Gene Ween sings on the Tyrannosaurs Rex cover, Summer Deep. The second amandla record The Full Catastrophe (2006) took the span of four years in which Coleman became a near-fatal accident survivor, turning crippling injuries around to perform again. The record and his miraculous recovery story profiled by The New York Times and NPR. On Catastrophe, Coleman continued Amandla’s crossing style boundaries, bringing Costello-esque pop and flirting with jungle music moods. It has been reviewed as “a minor masterpiece”. Currently, the drummer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, engineer / producer, music teacher, writer, web designer and carpenter has just completed the third record entitled Laughing Hearts, release date Valentine's Day, 2017.
