Description:
Lost Utopias is an exhibition of works from New York-based photographer Jade Doskow. The show opened on June 1st, and will run through July 28th. For the past decade, Doskow has been documenting the remains of World’s Fair sites, once iconic global attractions that have often been repurposed for less noble aspirations or neglected and fallen into decay. Doskow’s photographs poignantly illustrate the utopian architecture and art that has surrounded the World’s Fairs, across both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She is an award-winning photographer based in Brooklyn, New York, known for her rigorously composed and eerily poetic images that examine the intersection of people, nature, and time. This series has been featured in numerous press outlets including Architect Magazine, Elle Decor Italia, American Photo, Design Observer, Design Arts Daily, Photograph Magazine, Dwell, Slate, and Wired, among others.

Could you be the voice for an abused/neglected child in the court system? Volunteers needed in Buncombe County North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program 828-259-3443 or www.volunteerforgal.org for more info No experienced needed – all training and support provided Since January 1, 2017, 360 children have entered the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program – this means that 343 kids are alleged to have been abused/neglected and are in the court system. Of no fault of their own, these kids are typically removed from their home and placed and in foster care or a kinship placement. Why were they removed from the home? Maybe their parents abused substances, had untreated mental health, or engaged in domestic violence – maybe it was a combination of these factors. Either way, it’s the kids who pay the ultimate penalty as their lives are uprooted, they often change school districts and are taken away from everything they know. There are so many parties in a DSS abuse/neglect case: the judge, parents/caretakers, parent’s attorneys, DSS attorneys, GAL attorneys, investigative/in-home/foster care social workers…it’s easy to see how the kids get lost in the system. That’s where the role of the Guardian ad Litem comes in: to advocate and ensure the voice of the child is heard in court, that their wishes for permanency and best interest are made known to all parties. With so many kids in the GAL program, our office is overwhelmed with cases, and we have a critical need for volunteers to represent children’s best interests in court. There is no experience necessary and we provide all training and support. Being a GAL is a challenging and demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding as you literally ensure the child’s voice is heard in court throughout the life of the case. Our next training begins mid-January – visit www.volunteerforgal.org to complete a volunteer application, or call the office at 828-259-3443 for more information. Could you be the voice for a child?

Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, certified Zentangle® teacher, Susan Goodman, will show you how to create beautiful abstract images using this fun, meditative process. Zentangle® is an easy-to-learn, relaxing way to turn structured patterns—called “tangles”—into tiny (3.5” x 3.5”) masterpieces that can, ultimately, be assembled into a larger mosaic. Susan will show you how to combine dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves, and orbs to create your first "tile(s)." By the end of the workshop, you will have learned at least four basic tangles, the strokes necessary to make them, and how to add shading to bring your pictures to life!

To grow your business, you (obviously) need to influence your customers through targeted marketing programs. However, your customers are just as likely, if not more likely, to be influenced by their favorite websites, media outlets or bloggers than they are by you directly. This is why public relations is key to business success. In this session, Krista Valiante, a PR and marketing pro who has worked with companies including Intel and Microsoft, will give you a crash course in implementing effective PR strategies to complement your marketing efforts.

Description:
“As a child I loved hearing my grandpa sing while playing his old cracked ukulele. I learned to play by watching at his feet. The music was bound together with his stories of being in the war and of his huge family, all of whom were larger than life characters. To me, the stories and the songs became inseparable.” Born with a profound love of music and a knack for weaving his own stories into his witty compositions- sometimes darkly comic and other times heartrendingly beautiful- Jesse Daniel Edwards began composing his own music with his six brothers and sisters at the age of 7. His first composition was an ode to his mother's mashed potatoes, arranging harmonies and recording his earliest efforts in his family’s coal cellar. Leaving home at 17 to busk around the US and abroad in Europe, he eventually found his way to Music City and began to cut his teeth as a songwriter in Nashville in 2008. It was there that he was mentored by Al Bunetta, (John Prine) a childhood hero of Jesse's. As he has grown in years and artistic maturity, he has continued to put forth his brand of honest and heartfelt songwriting. And his rootsy style has persisted: “The rich traditions of towns like Nashville and Dublin affected me very strongly when I was traveling, not just the DIY sound of folk music, but also the candid stories,” Jesse says of his inspiration and sound. Since that period, JDE has performed full-time on the college and music festival circuits both solo and with his 5-piece band. He has songs featured in radio, television, and independent films and his music may be heard on Netflix, Apple Music, and Spotify (featured artist). His latest album “Un / Becoming” releases throughout 2018.

The Rad Trads - Since You Been Gone - 3/9/2016 - Paste Studios, New York, NY The Rad Trads - My Place [The Blues Kitchen Live] The Rad Trads - Keith Richards and I When The Rad Trads met in the East Village in the Spring of 2012, they were looking to play with the best musicians they could find. Making rent playing gigs in every bar and beer hall that would have them, the guys dominated New York City with their soulful American music, punk-rock energy & showmanship, powerful horns, driving rhythm section, and four captivating lead vocalists. Almost 5 years later, the Rad Trads have headlined on four Continents, and opened for acts such as Lake Street Dive, Tom Jones, Charles Bradley, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, The Lone Bellow, Margaret Glaspy, Con Brio, and Dustbowl Revival. They have toured Europe seven times, the Middle East and played in 14 countries and 33 U.S. States. Following the release of their first full length album (Must We Call Them Rad Trads - Dala Records) in May 2016, the band is slated to release their second LP of original music in the Spring of 2018. The record is highly anticipated in it’s creative direction and sound. Members of The Rad Trads have performed or recorded with St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Deer Tick, Lee Fields, Jonathan Batiste, Sarah Jarosz, David Duchovny, Red Baraat & even Paul McCartney as well as leading their own critically acclaimed bands.

"Project Drawdown is the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming. Our organization did not make or devise the plan—we found the plan because it already exists. We gathered a qualified and diverse group of researchers from around the world to identify, research, and model the 100 most substantive, existing solutions to address climate change. What was uncovered is a path forward that can roll back global warming within thirty years." -- Drawdown Join MountainTrue for a discussion of this fascinating and optimistic approach to reversing global warming. We will meet for four weeks and address new solutions each time. It is free to attend the book study, but MountainTrue will not be providing copies of Drawdown. The book is available for $22 at Malaprop's bookstore in downtown Asheville.

Description:

Classically-trained singer / pianist Olivia Chaney graduated from Englands Royal Academy of Music, before teaching herself guitar and Indian harmonium, delving back to the inspiration behind the British folk revivalists. She has since built a loyal and growing following as a songwriter and interpreter, both in the UK and internationally, through her acclaimed and eclectic live performances and much lauded recorded works. In 2013, Olivia self-released an eponymous EP, that was followed by her critically-acclaimed 2015 Nonesuch debut, The Longest River. The latter, which The Guardian hailed as 'an enchanting and stately creation', was noted in a number of 'Best Of 2015' lists, (Uncut, Mojo, PopMatters, Chicago Reader and more); whilst The Independent featured it in their Top 5 Albums of the Year, calling it 'A landmark release'. Last year Olivia featured on two collaborative albums: the first - Folk Songs - with fellow Nonesuch artists; Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens, Sam Amidon and Kronos Quartet; and the second - The Queen of Hearts - by Offa Rex, an album by a new band formed between Olivia and The Decemberists, which was nominated for a Grammy at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in the 'Best Folk Album' category. On June 15, 2018, Nonesuch released Olivia's second solo album - Shelter - which was produced by Thomas Bartlett (David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens, St.Vincent, The National, Florence Welch). Already applauded as a sophomore triumph, the media are saying: 'even the simplest arrangements seem to ooze with an inherently fluid musicality. From the deathless serenity of the opening title track to the neo-classical closer "House On The Hill", here is ranscendent refuge from the storm. Uncut; A finely wrought piece of work, with Chaneys swooping delivery turning songs into dramas. An elegant, luminous album. Observer; A beautifully haunting meditation on the human condition. Sun; The ravishing follow-up to the Chaney's acclaimed debut is an exercise in bejewelled simplicity. Chaney's clear resonating voice is a superlative means to convey this eagle-eyed observer's tender intimations like Dragonfly and A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. A triumph.' Daily Mirror.Over the past few years, Olivia has collaborated and shared the stage with a diverse range of artists including Robert Plant, Eliza and Martin Carthy, The Decemberists, Shirley Collins, Alasdair Roberts, Kronos Quartet, Zero 7 and The Labque Sisters.
