Genre: Jazz/FunkTickets: adv. $23 // dos. $25Show: 9:30PM (Doors: 9PM)Ages: 21+ Slim Wednesday w/ Jojo Hermann of WSP Slim Wednesday creates a sound that keeps listeners dancing all night. The band focuses on the sound of New Orleans that was pioneered by artists like Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and The Funky Meters, all of which were a huge part of JoJo's musical background. John “JoJo” Hermann is known for his lead vocals on many New Orleans style jazz and blues covers and originals along with gospel-style organ playing. In capturing the quintessential sound of New Orleans, The Slim Wednesday Band will be sure to provide a night of dancing, partying, and great entertainment. web: https://slimwednesday.com/music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3jev3v23xVcKxTD4v8oE9q Kalu and The Electric Joint Austin, Texas, has long been a breeding ground for fantastic musicians. Not only has the town birthed some of the best players one could ever hope to hear, it also attracts peerless musicians from all over the world. Kalu and the Electric Joint not only live up to Austin’s caliber of playing, they infuse it with worldly rhythms that give their music a sound all their own. This musical chemistry comes from the bond forged by frontman Kalu James, who emigrated from Nigeria at age 18 to claim Austin as his new home, and guitarist Jonathan “JT” Holt, who adds a touch of American soul to Kalu’s West African heritage. Kalu and JT connected through the hustle of the Austin music scene, writing songs together and discovering immediately that the talents of each complemented the other. JT is a master song craftsman, and he also can rip a mean solo. He’s just as comfortable holding down the groove with his magnificent chording and rhythm as he is busting out a blistering guitar lead. The musicians honed their vision during a weekly residency at Austin’s Continental Club Gallery that was initially intended to last only a month but eventually stretched to three years. Drummer & Percussionist, John Speice, who had a longstanding Austin connection with JT also had spent his life mastering rhythms Kalu had grown up with, making him a perfect fit for the group. Time Undone, Kalu and the Electric Joint’s forthcoming album, testifies to the band’s talent and mission with tight arrangements, stunning vocals and a deep well of influences. Time Undone is sonically woven with the low end theory of hip hop, yet it has the drive of heavy-hitting rock and roll and futuristic psychedelia. The resulting boogie-down blend of ethno-funk and neo-soul packs dance floors and tantalizes eardrums.Kalu and JT wrote the album’s songs, perfecting them during their nights at the Continental Club Gallery. The group recorded the album with producer Brett Orrison, known for his work with ‪The Black Angels‬ and ‪Widespread Panic‬, over a year’s time at Nest Recording in Driftwood, Texas. The album features guest appearances by members of ‪Widespread Panic‬, The War on Drugs, The Sword and ‪Grupo Fantasma‬.The ensemble’s sound palette integrates masterful songwriting and electrifying performances. With deep lyrics, ethereal arrangements, youthful exuberance and a positive message, Kalu and the Electric Joint make a lasting impression on everyone who hears them.Starting with the sounds of his homeland and a lifelong passion for the unorthodox approach, Kalu blazes an inclusive trail for himself that could not be more genuine. He embraces not only the creative attitude of his adopted hometown but also the traditions of his past. Remaining deeply in tune with the traditions of his upbringing, he balances his responsibilities to his family in Nigerian while pursuing his calling in the US. Having recently become an American citizen, he’s ready to add to this country’s greatest export — its music.Whether seeing Kalu and the Electric Joint throw it down in the clubs of Austin’s bustling South Congress scene or hearing the music of Time Undone for the first time, it’s blatantly obvious that this music evokes a wide range of emotions. This band delivers a positive message in turbulent times, uplifting their listeners and compelling them to get up and dance. With amazing vocals, beautiful arrangements and a funky modern beat, Time Undone is sure to be a modern classic. web: https://www.kaluandtheelectricjoint.com/music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OQOcvFKUjJLSHC5gdAkbt JBOT JBOT aka Josh Blake's Organ Trio is an instrumental groove project that features a rotating cast of local talent. Genre: psycho-delicious soul splatter /// acid bass unicorn chrondorTickets: $15/$18/$20Show: 9PM (Doors: 9PM)Ages: 21+ Freddy Todd Words will inevitably fail to properly describe Freddy Todd. Genre-busting could be an understatement. You can't pin him down with lexicon like lazer-bass and glitch-funk; these phrases fall way short of capturing the expressiveness, fearlessness, and space-traveling qualities of his music. Hearing his music is akin to being abducted by an extra-terrestrial cruise liner where everyone is tripping on space acid. And if you are lucky enough to witness him produce, you'll see that he fittingly looks just like the captain of said space cruiser, both hands intently gripping his electronics like the instrument panel on the flight deck.Let's bring this back to earth real quick. His motown, soul, blues, jazz, funk, hiphop (and techno for that matter) roots are a given, being born just outside of Detroit in Southfield, MI in 1990. Freddy moved out of his parents house immediately upon turning 18 lusting for the world and the creative juices it has to offer, living briefly in Ferndale, MI at first, then to the outskirts of a rougher part of the city of Detroit near 7 mile and Lahser for two years to live with his then-band "Tone Poets", producing for Scrummage hip-hop queen "Breezee One", and wrapping up his second full length studio LP on Simplify Recordings, followed by a year in Chicago. After living in the midwest until the age of 22, his sights were set on the golden west. Moving cross-country and living two years in the Bay Area, living in both the hood of West Oakland followed by the Oakland Hills while writing and releasing the "Golden Tremendous" album and starting his next EP. After soaking up the Cali vibes, he returned across country for some more wholesome less-congested living in the blue ridge smokey mountains of Asheville, NC to be closer to family, where he currently resides.Freddy Todd is truly a master of his craft not only in the studio but on stages across the globe. Without any pre-recorded sets, Freddy has the skills and the audacity to perform on the fly mixes of 100% original material tailored to his specific audience, mood, and venue each night, be it a theater in northern California, a club in the back alleys of Detroit, or an outdoor festival in the bush off the eastern coast of Australia (occasionally on special nights with his live drummer forming the FT Live Band/Duo). His earth shattering, meticulously programmed beats & rhythms, his lazer crunk, funky psychedelic bass & sound design, and his brain tingling, intelligently soul-soaked synths, melodies, & field-recorded samples are sure to shake your consciousness as they blast through airwaves out of top notch sound systems across the universe while Freddy serenades you with 100% live & improvised get-your-booty-on-the-floor analog Moog synthesizers & keytar, loop triggering, and occasional drums & percussive elements. Be careful where you don't look. web: https://freddytoddmusic.myshopify.com/ music: https://youtu.be/NrFRVPj5Rpc kLL sMTH Like a prismatic audio avalanche ripping down the mountains of Colorado to ears all around the world, kLL sMTH has stayed vigilant in his mission to keep the heart in the bass and the bounce in the booty. Cruising powerfully through gut-wrenching lows to illuminated peaks (and occasionally stopping off in sexy-time), his music paints an inspired portrait of an ecstatic dance-floor. music: https://soundcloud.com/kllsmth

Genre: Roots Rock ReggaeTickets: adv. $13 / dos. $15Show: 8PM (Doors: 7PM)Ages: 21+ Akae Beka One of life’s chief lessons is the consistency of change. The Earth, once conceived flat, is now thought to be round. The Book of Enoch, Noah’s great-grandfather, was obscured for generations until three copies were brought out of Ethiopia by a prominent European explorer. Events like these have triggered paradigm shifts in the evolution of human thinking, yet the same principle applies to individual growth as well. Akae Beka is the current manifestation of an evolving consciousness. Following a quarter of a century as lead singer and co-founder for the legendary, St. Croix-based band, Midnite, Vaughn Benjamin was inspired to intensify his light when life situations led him to revisit the Book of Enoch. He then realized his preparedness to answer the calling of a sacred oath described therein, the Akae, the Beka, one and the same. Much like the archangel Michael who was responsible for the truths pertaining to the secrets of creation, so does Benjamin today accept his role in a parallel time of rampant deception and broken taboos in the arenas of world leadership. Always rooted firmly in the teachings of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, his personal evolution and reaffirmed purpose is manifested in his newly declared name. Vaughn and his brother Ron Benjamin, sons of Antiguan music legend Ronnie Benjamin, Sr., together sowed the seeds of Midnite in 1989. During the mid-1990s, the band embarked on a 5-year sojourn in Washington DC, where they became area legends for their nightly 3-5 hour sets. Albums such as the debut Unpolished (1997), Ras Mek Peace (1999) and the seminal third release, Jubilees Of Zion (2001), collectively set the tone for what would become more than 60 albums  leading up to 2014. That year, their album Beauty For Ashes (a Midnite – I Grade collaboration) was named ‘Reggae Album of the Year’ by iTunes. Though his signature voice and edifying poetry graces an incredibly vast catalog of recordings, Akae Beka was unleashed by Fifth Son / VPAL Music in November 2015 with the debut album, Homage To The Land. The sophomore follow up, Portals, was released in collaboration with I Grade Records in April 2016. Livicated, released October 2016 on the Zion High Productions label, is the third and most recent project continuing Benjamin’s reputation for prolific output.  JahSayDo, the fourth release under Akae Beka, will be released on March 31, 2017.   Still he explores and introduces ancient, esoteric knowledge in ways applicable to present day realities. Akae Beka is accompanied by the following players of instruments: Peter Willock (drums and percussions), Lyndon ‘Ras L’ Williams (bass), Edmund Fieulleteau (guitar), Legrand Lee (guitar) and Suren Fenton (keyboards). Consisting mostly of former Midnite band members, the Akae Beka sound builds on a strong foundation of trance-inducing performance experiences across five continents and countless festivals such as Bonaroo, Outside Lands, Reggae on the River, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Summerjam, Rototom Sunsplash and Reggae Jam.  web: https://www.akaebeka.comvid: https://youtu.be/53puYBjvfdE?list=PLNJzOJwqkEXmbBu611jNVPUUgvYst1OSk Dub Kartel It more or less took an act of Jah to bring the Dub Kartel together. On January 12, 2010 a devastating earthquake struck in Haiti. After the Haiti earthquake a group of allstar Asheville reggae and ska musicians decided to do a fund raiser benefit for Haitian relief. Bringing together Agent Ishi (Strut), Coleslaw (Gnomebirds), Mike W. (Shining Rock, Natural Healing), Jeremy S.(Natural Healing), Tablesaw (Shining Rock, Cosmic Wind ) Horn players Courtney Hall, Sean Singer and JP Furnas(Empire Strikes Brass/Common Foundation), from this initial benefit show the seeds for Dub Kartel were sown. Dub Kartel pays tribute to the golden era of Jamacian music. Description:

Ministry’s Al Joursengen, the acclaimed pioneer of industrial music, doesn’t muck around, doesn’t sugar-coat, doesn’t pull punches.  He’s highly opinionated, exceptionally well read and articulate on subjects ranging from politics to alien conspiracies to American history to his beloved Chicago Blackhawks/Bulls/White Sox/Bears.  He is an avid follower of NASA scientist David S. McKay, ancient civilizations scholar Zecharia Sitchin, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Scottish writer/archaeologist/scientist Graham Hancock.  During a layover at the Las Vegas airport this past summer, Jourgensen spotted U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff, introduced himself, and took full advantage of the encounter to let the Congressman know of his views on tax reform and the possible perils of redistribution of wealth, the current obstruction of the “Russia-gate” investigation by the House Intelligence Committee lead by Republican Chair Devin Nunes, and to inquire about the status of the possible impeachment of the President, on not only obstruction and collusion charges, but for treason.

You see, Al Jourgensen is angry, really angry about what’s going on in America – sexual abuse and the disrespect of women in our society, the waning respect for the U.S. Constitution, the growing acceptance of one’s opinions replacing facts, the decline of the our leaders’ sense of morals, ethics and personal responsibility to the country and to their constituents, and the mad man in the White House. Yeah, Al is angry, and that takes us straight to Ministry’s upcoming album AmeriKKKant.

Before all of that, the industrial machine that is Ministry has manufactured immense amounts of sound during its 30+ years of musical artistry. Initially coming into existence in 1981, Ministry was to be the lifetime passion project of front runner and founder Al Jourgensen. Often associated with ideas and imagery that are easily recognized today, in part because of Jourgensen’s insanely dreaded hair, pitch black attire, vampiric glasses, and exquisite top hat, the band has become incredibly symbolic. But like any creature cursed with the gift of creativity, “Uncle Al” has shed his skin several times over the decades. The development of Ministry and all of Al Jourgensen projects has been purely organic, which is a huge reason why the masses following his projects are so vast.

Often referred to as one of the founders of Industrial Music, the true outlook of Ministry as well as Jourgensen’s other projects, is far more fluid than just one specific genre. Surgical Meth MachineRevolting Cocks, and anything Al “Fucking” Jourgensen has produced all explore different realms of sound and thought.

In the year 1981 in Chicago Illinois, Ministry was initially born. With an original line up of Al Jourgensen doing lead vocals, guitar, programming and overall production, Stephen George on drums, Robert Roberts on keyboards and backing vocals, and John Davis also on keyboards and backing vocals. New sounds were constantly being developed in the 80’s especially as technology improved. At first the band had a very catchy, synth-pop sound. They began by releasing four 12” singles on Wax Track! Records starting in 1981, and released their first LP “With Sympathy” in 1983 via Arista Records.

As time progressed however, so did Ministry, and they quickly developed a harsher, and even more stylized industrial sound that they soon became infamous for. In the mid to late 80’s the band gained a progressively greater following as it released albums Twitch (1986),  The Land of Rape and Honey (1988), and The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste (1989). The darker, heavier sound that Ministry had developed into was often a direct reflection upon modern concepts, society, and politics. It was also during this time that Al Jourgensen himself reached one of his many peaks of creativity and branched off into what would be one of his many side-projects: Revolting Cocks. He also began producing a vast amount of other music by artists similar to his realm in one way or another such as Nivek Ogre/Skinny Puppy, The Reverend Horton Heat, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Cheap Trick and Red Hot Chili Peppers. With the release of Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and The Way to Suck Eggs (1992), Ministry hit an all time high in the mainstream musical realm and even received a Grammy nomination. Filth Pig was released in 1994 and by then Ministry had not only grown a solid fanbase, but a solid reputation as well.

Famous for a hellaciously unique talent and sound, pure heinous insanity while on tour, and endless energy filled performances at countless festivals, Ministry had developed a cult following and would go on to release several more records throughout the years before eventually taking a hiatus. On December 23rd, 2012 then guitarist Mike Scaccia suffered a heart attack and passed away. It was not long after this that Jourgensen took what was to be an indefinite leave from doing anything Ministry related as he could not bare to continue without Scaccia. It wasn’t until recently that Jourgensen decided that if the circumstances were right, he would consider reawakening Ministry to release something new to the world.

Now, in 2017 Ministry has reunited, revamped its line-up, signed to Nuclear Blast Records, recently returned from a full world tour, and is now preparing to release their 14th studio album, AmeriKKKant, on March 9th 2018. Society and Politics have taken a turn for the insane and frightening in the United States and across the globe, leaving much inspiration and frustration for Ministry to draw from. Jourgensen remembers his shock while witnessing everyone and everything around him during the recent election process, and awoke on the morning of November 9th 2016 proclaiming: “We are making a fuckin’ album – right now.”

AmeriKKKant, like all Ministry projects, is an organic reflection of not just the band’s talent and sounds, but of the society in which we all live and breathe. Jourgensen says “I’ve spoken my piece on the societal conditions that would elect such a blithering idiot. It’s not an anti-Trump album, it’s like a- ‘did you pay attention in School? Does anybody have any intellectual curiosity anymore?’- album. [It’s] basically just holding up a mirror to ourselves and saying: ‘Look at this, is this what you really want to be?’”

With a new line up, incredibly full sound, and some might say a return to the roots of Ministry, the band is prepared to release a record that is socially relevant and sonically effective. Fans can look forward to a hearty future for not just Ministry, but Surgical Meth Machine, and Revolting Cocks as well. There is simply too much insanity in this world for Jourgensen not to speak his mind and keep our senses alive with his vast array of decibels and visuals: “I’m afraid for the stupidity of not embracing nonsense. I think nonsense is a great escape from the rigors of being in life’s hamster wheel.”

Worthwhile Sounds Presents: Andrew Marlin (of Mandolin Orange) with Josh Oliver WHEN: Tuesday December 11, 2018 WHERE: Ambrose West 312 Haywood Road Asheville, NC 28806 DOORS: 7pm SHOW: 8pm SEATING: Seated Show TICKETS: $15 ADV / $17 DOS / $22 VIP (Guaranteed 1st 3 Rows) Andrew Marlin You may be familiar with Andrew from his involvement with Chapel Hill, NC duo Mandolin Orange. As the songwriter for the band, Andrew has become known as a gifted lyricist, producing powerful yet subtle, thoughtfully crafted songs. With Mandolin Orange, Andrew has toured the world, gracing famous stages including the Ryman Auditorium, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and Newport Folk Festival, to name just a few. Buried In a Cape, Andrew’s first solo project, was released September 14, 2018. The album is a collection of his instrumental work. He wrote the songs on and off the road, and the recording session was scheduled on a whim at the Butcher Shoppe in Nashville, TN with Eli West (guitar, banjo), Christian Sedelmyer (fiddle), and Clint Mullican (bass). The compositions highlight Andrew's skills as an instrumentalist, while showcasing that his writing skills are not confined to poignant lyricism. With Buried In a Cape, Andrew follows in the footsteps of his previous accolades. The Mandolin Cafe said "Marlin joins his heroes as a mandolinist of note, and a talent for the ages," while Red Line Roots praised the album saying "Buried In a Cape is (in my opinion) the best record to be released in 2018. For those of you who are already fans of instrumental music, this will be your go to for years to come. For those who are not fans of instrumental music, listen to this album and then I’ll say ‘welcome to the club'." For these shows, Andrew will be joined by his Buried In A Cape recording band (Christian Sedelmyer, Eli West, and Clint Mullican). This cast of players have history with a list of roots music luminaries including Jerry Douglas, Bill Frisell, and Tim O’ Brien alongside their acclaimed solo projects. http://www.andrewmarlin.com

Progressive Crust band from Salt Lake City, UtahAll heavy/aggressive music comes from the same place. The biggest distinction that should be made between bands of this type shouldn't be by (sub) genrefication, but simply by how authentically and effectively they convey what they're trying to convey. Hopefully the sounds we make and the way we operate makes that point clearer than words can, but in case they don't, here are the words. Longtime friend Seth Avett even made an appearance, singing a duet with Andrews on "I'm so in Love with You." Andrews kicked off her songwriting career as co-founder of The Everybodyfields, a band whose mix of Southern genres — folk, country, bluegrass — and male-female vocals helped pave the way for future groups like The Civil Wars. It earned The Everybodyfields a wide fanbase too, as well as appearances at Bonnaroo, The Kennedy Center, and a cross-country tour with The Avett Brothers. After three albums, Andrews left the band and launched a solo career, starting with a self-titled EP and a full-length record, The Mirror, which built something bigger and broader on top of her Americana roots. Andrews also signed a publishing deal during this time, and began landing songs in multiple TV shows and movies, including Grey's Anatomy, The Good Wife, Nashville, American Idol, Hart of Dixie, and Me, Him, Her (2015), among others. Of late, Andrews has been writing and recording with fellow Nashville songwriter Peter Groenwald under the moniker Hush Kids. Their debut self-titled album comes out on September 21st. Andrews returned to the studio this fall to record her next solo album, due out in 2019.

CARRYING TEAR GAS, BILLY CLUBS, AND PLEXIGLASS SHIELDS WITH “PORTLAND POLICE” PRINTED UPON THEM, DOZENS OF RIOT POLICE MOVED PAST THE CROWDS GATHERING TO SEE RISING APPALACHIA PLAY. It was a warm evening in the fall of November 2016, and the sister-led folk band was performing to a sold-out audience at the Crystal Ballroom, blocks away from protests occurring in the capital city of Oregon. Somehow, despite the animosity and unrest in the streets, there was a palpable sense of joyful togetherness, community and celebration in the theater that night. In the middle of the set, as the band bent a hip-hop inspired anthem into an old gospel spiritual with the words “No more weeping and wailing,” the audience erupted in a long, raucous roar. The concert was offering not so much an escape from the drama outside, but an opening for a way through it.

Leah Song and Chloe Smith, founding sisters of Rising Appalachia, have long witnessed themselves – by both choice and coincidence – carrying harmony into settings of upheaval and discord. Soon after their eponymous release in 2006, the siblings moved to New Orleans to assist in rebuilding efforts following Katrina. There they gained not only a deeper sense of connection to the roots of American music, but also an abiding sense of purpose as musicians. The band, which has now grown to include musicians David Brown on upright bass and baritone guitar, and Biko Casini on world percussion, has settled into its stride and purpose through creating original music with a mission, rooted in the traditions of folk songs, storytelling, and grass roots activism. The band manages to meld traditions and genres the same way Leah and Chloe blend their voices; it’s casual, beguiling, and effortlessly singular.

As the name connotes, the band’s sound arises most directly from the old-time music traditions that were passed down from Leah and Chloe’s parents, who often took the young girls to fiddle camps and gatherings in the Appalachian Mountains. Their home was in a different setting altogether, though. It lay smack dab in the heart of urban Atlanta Georgia, a humble craftsman house where, on most afternoons, fiddle tunes and blues guitar still get played by their mother and father. The traditional melodies within can blend with the city’s other sounds: a passing car’s subwoofers shaking out deep drum and bass notes, and some accordion driven boleros from a soccer match down the road. It’s not hard, sitting on their porch, to understand where this band’s persuasive and powerful new genre of acoustic folk comes from – one that melds old-time music with a thick rhythm section, southern soul with West African instrumentation and an occasional Colombian love song thrown in. The diverse influences converge through the voices of Leah and Chloe, which go together as only two siblings’ can.

In addition to their original approach to their music, the band has embraced a similar independent spirit with their touring. Outside of many industry norms, they have built a significant, loyal following as evidenced by recent sold out shows across the U.S, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe. After years of performing in coffee shops and on the streets of New Orleans, Dublin, Florence and Stockholm, they have risen to grace stages such as Red Rocks, the Kennedy Center, the Vancouver Folk Festival, Urkult, Winnipeg Folk, Woodford and Envision festivals, Pickathon, Kate Wolf, among many others. In spite of a busy touring schedule, a manifesto known as the “Slow Music Movement” guides the band in deliberate and often anachronistic means of touring. In support of their last studio album, Wider Circles (2016), the band travelled the US by rail, and in then in 2017, they toured the gulf islands of British Columbia in a wooden sailboat named La Libertatia. Accompanied by a film crew and a hearty bunch of sailors, they played shows on farms across the islands in support of issues such as food justice, indigenous rights, and protecting clean water. The band routinely provides a platform for the causes local to the cities they play, and frequently incite their fans to gather with them in converting vacant or under-used lots into verdant urban orchards and gardens.

Both onstage and off, Rising Appalachia exudes a sense of rootedness, playful exploration, and inspired action. Their sound and message, such as revealed in the newest single, “Resilient,” suggest that voices and traditions, brought together through song, may be one of the saving graces to a world in distress. In a time when the fabric of community and culture often appear to be unraveling, their interweaving of music and mission, old traditions with new interpretations, creates an atmosphere of contagious hope and bliss.
