Description:
Transgender and gender variant folks deserve competent, inclusive care during their prenatal, birthing, postpartum, and parenting transitions. In this workshop, we will discuss what it means to provide gender inclusive care to clients. In the first session, we will specifically focus on gender competency discussing transgender and gender diverse identities, biological sex, pronouns and inclusive language, and watch content from trans and gender variant persons as they discuss their experiences accessing adequate care. In the second session, we will start putting our lessons into practice. How can we support our clients? We will discuss client advocacy, resource compilation and sharing, and building inclusion into business practices. Participants will have space to reflect on their own businesses to see where their growing edges are. Pre-registration required! _________________________________ Logistics When & Where: This workshop will take place on Tuesday Dec 10 & 17, 2019 over two consecutive weeks. Each session will be three hours, and includes two 15 minute breaks. Both sessions will take place at Homegrown Babies, 201 Charlotte Street, Asheville, NC 28801 Who this is for: This workshop is intended for birthworkers. midwives, doulas, and/or any people who support others through reproductive transitions. Format: These sessions will include presentation style information sharing, power point with writing, pictures and videos, small group discussion, language practice, role-play practice, large group discussion, and resource sharing via email. Registration: Pre-registration is required. The deadline for signing up is Friday, Dec 6, 2019. Attendance: Participants must attend both sessions. If an emergency prevents you from attending a session, you are welcome to attend a make up class when the next series of this course runs later this year. Exceptions to this are made for trans and gender variant people, whose lived experience has taught them much of what we will go over in the first session. Workshop size: Participation is limited to 10 people to allow ample space for reflection and processing as we move through the coursework. Cost & Refund Policy: This two-part 6 hour workshop is $125. Registration will take place through Brown Paper Tickets. After I have received your Brown Paper Ticket receipt, I will send you a brief questionnaire for you to fill out to finish your registration. Unfortunately, I cannot issue any refunds at this point. However, if after you register you are unable to attend, Im happy transfer your payment to the next iteration of the workshop. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to a transgender advocacy organization. *Transgender, gender variant, and IBPOC birthworkers may attend the course by paying a sliding scale fee. Please email me at [email protected] for details! To Bring: Please bring your sincerity, an open heart, the ability to breathe and sit with any feelings that may arise (especially defensiveness), and a willingness to reflect on your personal behaviors and business practices. Additionally, writing utensils and a notebook, and snacks are encouraged! Workshop Culture: This is a safe(r) space in which racism, transphobia and transmisogyny will not be tolerated. This is not a space to discuss whether certain identities are valid or not, or a space to argue about whether everyone deserves competent care. If you are already not on board with the idea that all humans, regardless of gender, deserve compassionate support through health care transitions, this is not the workshop for you. Childcare: Childcare will be provided for folks who would like it. Please email me with the number, age and needs of your little ones to set it up at least one week before the first class! Description:
I am debuting a new series of psychedelic, wildly distorted landscape photos of Asheville in a solo show up now through December at ZaPow! Gallery in Asheville’s South Slope, 12-8PM Sunday-Thursday, 12-10PM Friday and Saturday. The new series of photographs, currently known simply as “The Asheville Series”, began when I stumbled upon a process of shooting panoramic photos which produced distortions in the image over which I had only limited control. I immediately saw an energy in these images that perfectly captured Asheville’s funky vibe, which I sought to enhance by digitally hand-coloring the pictures in dazzling, intense hues. The end result is intended as a loving tribute to my vibrant hometown. The show is rounded out with some of my robot art, with both new pieces and some old classics available in larger sizes than I usually display, including several prints on metal. In addition, I am showing a small selection of my rarely-exhibited tiki art, featuring several original paintings and a mind-melting fluorescent skateboard deck by my alter ego, Tiki Lord.

Description:
Do you want to help lobby bipartisan solutions on climate change? Or take the lead on talking to businesses about climate advocacy? Or how about being a public voice for climate engagement in politics? Citizens’ Climate Lobby helps to build political will for a livable world by empowering citizens to engage with national legislators on a bipartisan climate change solution called Carbon Fee & Dividend. This revenue-neutral, market-based solution would charge a slowly rising fee on carbon and return the dividends to each household equally on a monthly basis to offset the rising cost. It would also help to grow the economy, jobs, & GDP, provide predictability for the markets, promote bank investments in low-carbon technologies, and motivate energy companies to transition to cleaner energy faster. Come learn more about our legislation that has been introduced to Congress in 2019 with bipartisan support. It is called the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act www.energyinnovationact.org At our CCL-AVL chapter meetings, we dive into how we can use these strategies to build the political momentum for climate action to pass national bipartisan legislation on climate change. All political parties are welcome to join in this effort - conservative, liberal, progressive, libertarian, etc. Free with donation We meet every 3rd Monday of the month! Check out or share our events on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ashevilleccl Directions to Paulsen Lodge at Asheville School: Turn off Patton/Smoky Park Highway onto Asheville School Road. Go straight up the hill and through the guard gate (not staffed during our meeting time). Pass Faculty Drive on your left, continue straight for a couple hundred yards, veer left at the next possible turn. There are two log cabins directly ahead of you. Paulsen Lodge is the larger one to the left. https://www.ashevilleschool.org/about/campus-map Parking is all around. Side of gravel road that’s in front of building, up on road in any marked spots, behind building.

The basic definition of “potlatch” from Wikipedia says, "A potlatch is a gift-giving feast practiced by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada and the United States, among whom it is traditionally the primary economic system." To experience this type of sharing economy, we’re asking people to bring food and something used and in good condition that will be chosen by someone else who attends the Social. It will be great fun!

Description:
Eda Rhyne welcomes you into its sanctum, the distillery floor, to enjoy the first of a series of private, coursed tasting dinners with beverage pairings. We are calling this series of events Of Course (of course we are), and the first featured guest will be Iter, an itinerant food concept from chef Daniel Rider. Chef Daniels food has been featured at Eda Rhyne at a pop-up event earlier this season, and was very well received. He currently bakes bread for chef Jacob Sessoms Table and All Day Darling, and he was Eric Morris sous chef at Katie Buttons Nightbell, and previously the chef de partie at Jose Andres Minibar in DC. Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal, who oversee the beverages at Eda Rhynes new barroom, will be designing the course pairings, which will consist both of wine and cocktails featuring local amari (bittersweet spirits and liqueurs) from us, Eda Rhyne, in the very space where they are produced. The dessert course may very well be featuring an enviable egg nog recipe for which, if you ask nicely, you may obtain the reciept to replicate for your friends and family this holiday season! Non-alcoholic adult beverages will be available for substitution, and as for food it is possible to offer a vegetarian or a pescatarian option. No matter what, any special requests or dietary restrictions must be included in your reservation form so that we can be fully prepared to accommodate your needs! For this particular menu, because of the nature of some of the dishes chef Daniel wishes to prepare, we are not planning to offer a gluten free or dairy free option. Our apologies to those of you for whom this is a deal breaker, and we encourage you to keep abreast of our upcoming events as we post them, because we will definitely be informing you as to those dietary options. Up to now, we have sort of assumed that you know who we are. In case you are not familiar with Eda Rhyne, we are a local distillery in Biltmore that utilizes the breathtaking biodiversity in our region of the Smoky Mountains to produce amari, which are bittersweet, often herbaceous liqueurs traditionally produced in the uplands of Italy and other Alpine regions of Europe. A significant portion of Eda Rhynes flavors is thanks to local forage, and nearly all of our botanicals and ingredients hail from this region. The botanicals featured in our products are part of the pharmacopeia of the region, and many have been prized for their medicinal potency by homesteaders and native herbalists alike. This local medicinal plant tradition reflects the cultural context of amari in Europe, where they were once sold as medicinal elixirs. Head Distiller Rett Murphy also applies his farming background to sourcing the quality agricultural products that find their way into his vats. Here at Eda Rhyne, we are excited to add food experiences into our offerings, because it is within the context of food and good company that these spirit styles, largely of Alpine, European origin were meant to be enjoyed. We are also excited to invite you, dear reader, to imbue the same room where we put so much effort and love into our spirits with your own positive energies in the forming of great memories sharing good times with us and our guest chefs!

The Friends of East Asheville Library present free a concert by Laura Boosinger, an award-winning performer and recording artist whose primary focus is the interpretation of traditional music from the Southern Appalachian region. Laura's concerts offer a step back to a simpler time, awakening memories for the old and gently instilling important cultural lessons for the young. Through an introduction to several traditional instruments and vocal styles found throughout the region, from ballads to play-parties, old-time banjo to finger-style Autoharp, Laura invites audiences to participate in the richness of the region's musical heritage. Her performances have included The Tennessee Homecoming at The Museum of Appalachia, MERLEFEST and The Smithsonian Folklife Festival. She garnered the title of "Most Outstanding Performer" at the oldest continuing traditional music festival in the country, Asheville's "Mountain Dance and Folk Festival." In January of 2007 Laura was invited to perform at Scotland's Celtic Connections festival where she shared the stage with the legendary Peggy Seeger. Her teaching of old-time banjo and shaped-note singing is featured at festivals throughout the Southeast. Laura's recording "Let Me Linger," is a collection of tunes learned from NC Heritage award winners Luke and Harold Smathers. Included are old-time fiddle tunes as well as swing favorites such as "Sweet Sue," "Up a Lazy River", and "Whispering."

NV Pol Roger Champagne Brut Reserve (Champagne, France) Year in and year out, this is one the best non-vintage Champagne deals in the marketplace. And the current disgorgement is brilliant stuff! Ripe, yet energetic, it exudes pure class and sophistication. Bravo!
