Description:

Maria Bamford stars in the semi-autobiographical Netflix comedy series Lady Dynamite, lauded as “revelatory” by Entertainment Weekly and one of 2016’s must-see shows by Variety and Rolling Stone.  The series was created by Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development) and Pam Brady (South Park).

Maria is the creator and star of Maria Bamford: the special special special and of the cult hit web series The Maria Bamford Show, which screened at the Museum of Art and Design.  She was the first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the Comedy Central series The Comedians of Comedy and Netflix’s Comedians of Comedy: The Movie.

Maria voices characters on numerous animated series including BoJack Horseman, Adventure Time, Legend of Korra, Puss in Boots and PBS’s Emmy-winning series Word Girl.  She can also be heard voicing lead roles on Fox’s Golan the Insatiable and Yahoo’s Talking Tom & Friends.

Maria recurred as DeBrie Bardeaux on Netflix’s Arrested Development reboot, for which she was praised as a “standout” (TIME) and “perhaps one of the high points of the entire new season” (Black Book Magazine).  She has also recurred on USA’s Benched, fX’s critically-praised Louie, and currently recurs on the ABC hit Fresh Off the Boat.   Her next special Old Baby premieres on Netflix in 2017.

with Body Games, Fifty Foot Shadows
Marley Carroll has a prismatic array of musical manifestations, and your impression can change based on which part of the spectrum you choose to view. As a singer and songwriter, he penned the eminently danceable indie hit The Hunter. As a DJ, he constructs expertly-mixed marathon sets that juxtapose vintage soul, disco and Afrobeat with modern house flourishes. Now, with his forthcoming record on Emancipators Loci imprint, Carroll has focused his attention on rhythm-forward instrumental electronica that is as meticulously-detailed as it is sublime. Taking its inspiration from the natural world, specifically flying and flocking creatures, Flight Patterns represents a new high watermark for the veteran producer.Carrolls humble origins as a classically-trained pianist and percussionist were shattered after he took top honors at a statewide DJ battle at the prodigious age of 17. The experience catapulted him into notoriety, pitting his skills against DJs twice his age and catalyzing his path towards career musicianship. In the intervening years he has completed a transformation into a dynamic electronic music producer, world-class turntablist and captivating live performer. As a producer, Carrolls early experiments wove the stuttering precision of mid-era Warp (Boards of Canada, Autechre) with the gauzy emotional haze of shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine), culminating in the well-loved debut LP Melanaster. His follow-up, 2013s Sings, revealed a more rhythmically-driven version of Carrolls vision, influenced by the galvanic dance floor energy of larger live audiences. A densely-propulsive electronic journey rooted in shadowy forest imagery, Sings received universal critical acclaim, drawing praise from tastemakers like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Stereogum, and was honored with an album-of-the-week nod at Bandcamp.Onstage, Carroll brings a more raw and improvisatory adaptation of his music to rapt audiences, combining live sampling, drum pads and looping with stunning and often unorthodox turntable skills. He has shared the stage with similarly-minded peers like Floating Points, Bonobo and DJ Shadow and has appeared at groundbreaking music festivals across the country (Coachella, Decibel, Moogfest). With Flight Patterns, Carroll has tuned his instruments skyward and infused his unique style of subtle and compelling dance music with samples and textures from the natural world. Bird songs, field recordings, gongs, deep basses, wooden drums and plaintive analog synths provide the substrate for expansive songs with the kind of three-dimensional depth that invites immersive, intentional listening. Flight Patterns is out 11/16 on Loci Records.A lot of artists working to merge dance musics propulsive complications with straightforward songwriting structures aim for something as simply excellent as this, and they often fail; however, Carroll hits a direct bullseye with The Hunter, and when the tart synth winds in about halfway through, its one of those eye-widening moments that should happen more often. with Of Good Nature
Sometimes inspiration strikes from the immersion of living in a far away place. The view of the ocean. The sound of a rainforest at sunrise. The smell of an open-air market. The embrace of the wild human experience. However, maybe the nostalgia for a certain place might be attributed instead to a feeling, or a time, or even a person. Sometimes, inspiration stems from a place that everyone can relate to, but maybe no ones actually been. This is the music of The Hip Abduction, the vibrant St. Petersburg, FL-based collective that formed over a mutual appreciation for West African and early Jamaican reggae/dub music. The Hip Abduction (THA) began through informal jam sessions and quickly coalesced into a sound that attracted national attention. For Gold Under the Glow, the bands third full album released on March 11, 2016, THA engage an indie pop acumen alongside a highly emotive and roots driven sound. Recorded in Nashville, Gold Under the Glow was produced by Dabney Morris (Wild Cub) who is credited with incorporating synth-pop teeth into the bands global foundation and summery vibe. Its a smart blending of world pop and club aesthetics that appeals to both audiences. The Hip Abduction featuring David New (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Powers (bass), Dave Johnson (baritone, tenor sax), Cody Moore (keyboards, sax), Matt Poynter (drums, vocals) and Justino Lee Walker (guitar, vocals, sitar) have shared stages with the likes of Grace Potter, Galactic, The Revivalists, Ziggy Marley, Umphreys McGee, Thievery Corporation, Matisyahu, 311, Galactic, and Moon Taxi and has performed at Shaky Knees, FloydFest, Wanee Music Festival, Suwannee Hulaween, Deep Roots Mountain Revival, Sunfest, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Tropical Heatwave Music Festival, The BIG What? and more. Watch out for more festival plays in 2018 including Red Rocks Amphitheater, California Roots Festival, Blue Plum Festival, Camp Bisco, Duck Creek Log Jam, Camp Deep End and more as well as coast to coast dates.

The Family Constellation Workshop is a beautiful way to bring the real issues in your family system to light. Systemic Constellation is an effective method for working with trans-generational issues and repeating patterns that show up in the family by increasing the flows of Love in your family system, easing the blockages to the flows of Love. A Family Constellation Workshop is a beautiful and gentle way to bring the real issues in your family system to light and to encourage them to transform. Systemic Family Constellations began in Germany in the early 1980s, and are the life work of Bert Hellinger, psychotherapist. Systemic Family Constellation is a popular, known therapy worldwide and is now gaining traction in the US.  What is Family Constellation and how does it work?  During a Systemic Family Constellation workshop, we gather as a sacred circle of individuals in service to our families and to each others' families. If you have an issue you want to look at in your family system, I will ask you some basic questions about your family system: Who was excluded? Did anyone die at a young age? Was anyone forgotten? When I have a sense of where the issue might be centered, I ask you to chose people from the group to represent your family members, issues, events, or even places which might have a bearing on the issue. I will ask you to place each representative in the working space in the manner in which it feels 'right' to you.  When a representative is placed, they are connected to the Knowing Field of your family system. They begin to relate to one another in very specific visual and spatial ways. From these relationships, we can see what cannot normally be seen about the inner workings of the system, and we can see where blockages occur. By nudging the system and by encouraging representatives to use Healing Statements of simple truth about what is, we strengthen the system and increase the flows of love within it. Systemic Constellation is one of the only methods for examining and modifying trans-generational patterns within the family system. To have a successful constellation you don't need to bring any other members of your family with you! We can do deep work in constellations because you bring the complete Knowing Field of your family system with you. We work with the system itself when we do a constellation. You can bring any issue to the workshop to be constellated. In the past, clients have looked at issues such as these: Repeating Patterns Across The Generations Addiction Estrangement Loss of Fortune Repercussions of Immigration Physical Pain which defies treatment Eating Disorders and many more Constellation work looks into the systemic aspects of the issue, that is, the parts of the issue which lie in the system itself, rather than in individuals.

Local color imbues this holiday concert by the Asheville Gay Men's Chorus, featuring historic seasonal tunes from the Appalachian mountains in both traditional and modern settings, as well as African-American spirituals. "At the Creche" by local composer Jonathan David uses text by UNCA professor and poet David Hopes to bring a menagerie of animals to the manger accompanied by the familiar Southern Harmony tune "Wondrous Love." In addition, a lovely setting of "In The Bleak Midwinter" by AGMC founder David Friddle brings us back to our roots and helps us celebrate the familiar alongside the new. Join us for a memorable evening. Asheville Gay Men's Chorus is now in our 20th season and strives to entertain, advocate and educate.

Description:

There was a musical language that we created; something without a guiding pattern that you could really just jump into and see where things could go, Maryland folk musician Michael Nau says of the process of recording his forthcoming third solo album, Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread. Hes wildly poetic, especially when recounting his dedication to music, and the work that led to this particular collection of delicately passionate songs. These things became the vehicle by which we traveled, giving us reason to spend most of our lives in a van of uncertainty.Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread is the follow up to 2016s Mowing the first record he released under his own name, after fronting psych folk projects Page France and Cotton Jones June 2017s Some Twist, and its extension, The Load EP. The sprawling new album was recorded in Benny Yurcos one-bedroom apartment in downtown Burlington, Vermont. Nau and his collaborators had a cool little set up going in Yurcos spot drums and bass took over the bedroom, the guitar amp in the bathroom, Naus vocals and piano in the living room, and a vibraphone in the kitchen. Its the first time one of Naus records happened all in one place, and it feels most like a band record than ever before, he says; Nau and this particular group of musicians held it down together as a true team, which is why Nau named the record in their honor. Nothing more was added to it than what was recorded by Nau and the band in Yurcos apartment. It didnt feel like the right thing to do to mess with it post-facto, he adds. Its a documented live performance. It happened the way it happened, and thats how it is.You can hear that organicness all across Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread, from the golden-sounding, glibly existential love song Less Than Positive, one of the oldest written on album, to the smoky and melancholic Smudge, one of the most recent compositions. It wasnt until recently that I ever considered revisiting songs from so long ago, Nau says of playing songs he wrote ages ago, like Less Than Positive. But something happened where Im now able to appreciate the distance between those songs written long ago, and where Im at now. It feels like playing someone elses song. Nau stresses this theme of time and distance in talking about the record. And those metaphysical thoughts permeate the music, which hangs in an ageless space, somehow classic-sounding and fresh like a cold wind, at the same time. The songs on this layered record sound sunny and familiar, like sharing stories and worries with a close friend on a late summer day. In a gorgeous and natural way, he contemplates his own process, those feelings of uncertainty. Making it too hard just comes easier, Nau croons on Funny In Real Life, an exquisite meditation on creation and self. Truth is such a beautiful force/And every time we find the chorus/Theres no second-guessing the real/I dont ever know how I feel.Nau shines when hes nestled in that medium between melancholy and carefree. He seems to be thinking about the past, present, and future, all at the same time, and his songs move between pain and joy, fires and rivers, faraway stars, icy Saturdays, clouds of smoke, between shelter and flowers in the rain. And it just keeps going, if its done its done/Still flow in the flowing, all around the sun, he sings on Smudge, the records finale, which is about love, and memories, and loneliness, and apprehension Something coming around some bend/Waiting for something to never end all at once. Its all just part of the waves of life; sometimes you get stuck, or things move slower, and sometimes the pace steps up. And that seems to be the gist of Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread that there are different movements in the self, that constantly figuring yourself out is all part of the journey. As long as love is the motion, Nau says, it might get there. Wherever there is.
