Description:

Best known for his work with the pioneering German group Can, Damo Suzuki is a vocalist and improvisational musician whose creative wanderlust has taken him around the world, performing with a dizzying variety of collaborators. Suzuki had little experience as a musical performer before joining Can in 1970, but his bold, theatrical style and abstract lyrical sensibility put its stamp on three of the group's most memorable albums (1971's Tago Mago, 1972's Ege Bamyasi, and 1973's Future Days) before he left the group in 1973. After a decade away from music, Suzuki returned in 1983, shunning the recording studio in favor of improvised live performances, a number of which have been recorded and released, among them 2000's Seattle, 2002's P.R.O.M.I.S.E., and 2007's The Fire of Heaven at the End of the Universe. Working with established groups as well as "sound carriers" he often has never met before walking on-stage, Suzuki's music in the 21st century has found him relentlessly exploring the boundaries of spontaneous creativity.Kenji "Damo" Suzuki was born in Kobe, Japan on January 16, 1950. Growing up, Suzuki's sister encouraged him to play music, giving him his first instrument, a flute, when he was eight years old. Suzuki developed a keen interest in classical music as a child, and in his teens he discovered American R&B music and the popular British acts of the day, especially the Kinks (he briefly ran a Kinks fan club). When he was 17, Suzuki left Japan to explore the world, living in a Swedish commune for a while (where he formed a short-lived folk music duo) before making his way through Denmark, France, England, and Ireland. By 1970, Suzuki had landed in Germany and was cast in a Munich production of the countercultural musical Hair. During his travels, Suzuki had occasionally made money by busking in the streets, and feeling hemmed in by the rigors of performing the same songs each night, he took to performing in the streets in his free time. One of his improvised street performances was seen by Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, the bassist and drummer with the German progressive band Can. Can's vocalist, Malcolm Mooney, had recently left the band, and they were wondering how to fill his place for a gig that evening. Czukay invited Suzuki to perform with them, and the band was impressed with the strength and imagination of his improvised delivery. Suzuki joined Can full-time, making his recorded debut with the group on the song "Don't Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone," featured on the 1970 album Soundtracks. Suzuki would record three albums with Can -- 1971's Tago Mago, 1972's Ege Bamyasi, and 1973's Future Days -- with the singer often creating spontaneous lyrics during studio jams that would be later edited into completed songs. In 1973, Suzuki left Can, and for the next ten years, he stayed out of the spotlight as he got married, became a Jehovah's Witness, and dealt with health problems. In 1983, Suzuki returned to performing, appearing on-stage with Dunkelziffer, a group led by Jaki Liebezeit, and recording a pair of albums with the band, 1984's In the Night and 1986's III. (A Dunkelziffer concert from this period featuring Suzuki was released in 1997 under the title Live.) In 1986, Suzuki and Liebezeit formed the Damo Suzuki Band, which also included Dominik von Senger on guitar and Matthias Keulon keyboards. By this time, Suzuki had become disenchanted with the studio recording process, but he gigged regularly and often recorded his shows, and in 1998 two archival releases from the Damo Suzuki Band were issued, V.E.R.N.I.S.S.A.G.E. and the seven-disc set P.R.O.M.I.S.E. In the late '90s, Suzuki formed what he called Damo Suzuki's Network, his umbrella name for improvisational performances with musicians from all over the world. For his Network shows, promoters for each appearance would provide Suzuki with a band, and they would generate spontaneous music with Suzuki on vocals (the vocalist describes his collaborators as "sound carriers"). Suzuki would release more than a dozen live albums under the Network rubric, and he's also issued collaborations with existing groups and soloists, including Cul de Sac (2004's Abhayamudra), Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (2007's Please Heat This Eventually), the Holy Soul (2010's Dead Man Has No 2nd Chance), Mugstar (2015's Start from Zero), and Jelly Planet (2018's Damo Suzuki & Jelly Planet). In 2014, Suzuki was diagnosed with colon cancer, and his treatment left him unable to travel or perform for a spell, but in 2016 he was well enough to return to the stage, and still performs regularly. He will embark on a coast to coast tour of the United States in the spring of 2019. This will mark Suzukis first run of U.S. performances in over 10 years.

On Thursday, May 2nd, from 5-8pm, Momentum Gallery hosts an opening reception for a two-person, mixed media exhibition called Dissolution. The collection features individually created and collaborative works by two artists, Seth Clark and Jason Forck. Original collages mounted to panels play off architectonic sculptures in glass and wood culminating in a cohesive body of work that explores the notion of deteriorating architecture. Clark and Forck came together through a mutual interest in Americana landscape and the concept of abstraction through decay. They are attracted to the aesthetics of buildings and architectural systems that are dissolving and dissipating. Dissolution describes their work formally in terms of architecture in collapse, but it also describes their collaboration in terms of disassembling ideas and then bringing them back together. Supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Dissolution is a result of a one-year, Idea Furnace residency at Pittsburgh Glass Center that pairs glass and non-glass artists for explorations in material, content, and process. Detailed architectural formations, in various sizes, play a significant role in the cohesive collection, with shingles made from glass and exposed beams and interior bracing lending to the works' authenticity. About the work, Seth Clark comments, “I see an inherent honesty in the face of my subject. Among all of the clutter—the shards of wood and layers of rubble—there remains a gentle resolve. The buildings, often on the brink of ruin, have something very energized and present trying to escape from their fragmented reality.” Momentum Gallery is pleased to bring these artists and their dynamic body of work to Asheville for the first time. A strong collection of two- and three-dimensional work by two artists speaking in one voice—the Jealous Curator comments about Dissolution, “Perhaps one of the most amazing collaborations I’ve ever seen! They truly figured out how to blend their artistic skills and talents to create something beautiful.” Dissolution opens with an artist reception Thursday, May 2nd from 5-8 pm and continues at the downtown gallery’s Lexington Avenue location through Saturday, June 22nd.

Description:
“Stephen Nachmanovitch’s The Art of Is is a philosophical meditation on living, living fully, living in the present. To the author, an improvisation is a co-creation that arises out of listening and mutual attentiveness, out of a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. It is a product of the nervous system, bigger than the brain and bigger than the body; it is a once in a lifetime encounter, unprecedented and unrepeatable. Drawing from the wisdom of the ages, The Art of Is not only gives the reader an inside view of the states of mind that give rise to improvisation, it is also a celebration of the power of the human spirit which — when exercised with love, immense patience and discipline — is an antidote to hate.”— Yo-Yo Ma, cellist

Description:
Stewards of Children is the only evidence-informed, third-party evaluated child sexual abuse prevention training of its kind, and is nationally available in both English and Spanish. It can be taken online, or through a facilitator-led group session. I am a Darkness to Light authorized facilitator of this program, and I believe this training would benefit your staff, volunteers, and community. It can be administered to community members, schools, sports leagues, faith centers, youth serving organizations, and state agencies – basically to any adult or organization concerned about the well being of children.   Unlike some other child sexual abuse prevention programs that focus on educating children about concepts like good touch-bad touch, stranger danger, tricky people, etc., Stewards of Children focuses on adult education because ultimately, it is adults’ responsibility to keep children safe. This training approaches the difficult topic of child sexual abuse in a way that is inspiring, not fear-focused or depressing. It does not feature perpetrators of abuse, but instead uses a combination of advice from field experts, stories from adult survivors, and insight from concerned parents. This program’s practical, five-step approach is widely applicable and provides adults with the tools to protect the children in their lives and youth serving organizations. To learn more about Stewards of Children, click here.  Presented by Colleen Burnet from Mountain Child Advocacy Center  Thursday, May 2nd, 2019 6:15-8:15pm $10.00 2 CHCs *Directors and Family Child Care Home Providers* – You can attend ANY training for free if one or more of your staff attends the same training. If for some reason you are unable to attend this training after you have registered, you may send someone in your place! Just be sure to let us know ([email protected]). What is the refund policy? Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds for trainings, unless Buncombe Partnership for Children cancels the event. Instead, we do offer ‘credits’ that can be applied to future trainings you wish to attend. To receive credits for future training you must cancel at least 24 hours in advance. You are responsible for contacting us should you wish you transfer your credit to another training. Can I pay with cash or check? If your organization must pay by check, please contact Stevie Alverson at 828.407.2058 or [email protected] All checks are due 72 hours in advance unless otherwise agreed upon. Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash. If you do not have a credit card or feel uncomfortable using a credit card online, consider asking a friend to register you and giving them cash. I’m going to be running late. Can I still attend? Unfortunately, DCDEE rules do not allow for credit to be given to participants that miss more than 15 minutes of a training. The participant is welcome to still attend, but CHCs or CEUs cannot be given.

Description:

Captain Beyond was formed from the ashes of Deep Purple, Johnny Winter And, and the Iron Butterfly. The line-up consisted of Rod Evans, vocals; Bobby Caldwell, drums-vocals; Larry Rhino Reinhardt, guitar; and bassist Lee Dorman. In the beginning there were five members with keyboardist Lewie Gold who left some months later for personal reasons before the first album was recorded. After hearing the bands demo, long-time friends Duane and Gregg Allman introduced Captain Beyond to the late Phil Walden and Capricorn Records. After the release of the first album Captain Beyond and a most successful launch at the Montreaux Jazz and Pop Festival followed by a relentless touring schedule (with Alice Cooper, The Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath and many others,) Bobby left for a short time during the recording of the second album called Sufficiently Breathless. He then returned and Captain Beyond set out once again on a new round of touring with the likes of King Crimson, Trapeze, ZZ Top, etc. In the mid-seventies lead singer Rod Evans decided to leave music and was replaced with Willie Daffern on vocals. The band then signed with Warner Bros. and recorded the album Dawn Explosion. After further touring and management changes Captain Beyond in 1978 went on hiatus. In 2000, Rhino and Bobby decided to reform Captain Beyond which included Jeff Artabasy who is a current member, and recorded a four-track EP. Unfortunately, this line-up was short lived as Larry Reinhardt was having health problems and it was decided to not continue. In addition, a tribute album to Captain Beyonds music was recorded by some of Scandinavias best musicians titled A Thousand Days of Yesterdays. In January of 2012, Larry Reinhardt passed on , followed by Captain Beyonds original bassist Lee Dorman some nine months later. Rod Evans has been involved in the medical field and is not currently involved in music.Bobby Caldwell has resurrected the new Captain Beyond with the intention of recording some new master works, and bringing the historic music back to their many fans! The current line-up in addition to Bobby Fire Caldwell and Jeff The Count Artabasy, is Simon Lind, Don Bonzi, and Jamie Holka. Touring has begun in 2015, and they are looking forward to meeting everyone!

Genre: BluegrassTickets: $15/$18Show: 10PM (Doors: 9PM)Ages: 21+ Jeff Austin Band Mandolinist Jeff Austin is unstoppable. He is celebrated for his fleet fingers and penchant for improvisation on stage, but those qualities also speak volumes about how he chooses to live. Austin has cultivated his natural musical abilities and allowed himself to be driven by his boldest instincts. In this way, he has been able to build positive, exciting momentum around his life’s greatest passion. In 1998, while working at a bar called the Verve in Nederland, Colorado, Austin met Adam Aijala and Ben Kaufmann, with whom he and Dave Johnston would form the Yonder Mountain String Band. “My time with Yonder has taught me what is possible,” Austin says. “It has shown me that if you work hard at it and you believe in it and there’s a part of you that’s meant to do it, it will happen. It’s clichéd, but it’s true.”It is with this history at his back that Jeff Austin will step out into the spotlight as a solo act. “My ideal sound is between Phish, My Morning Jacket, and Zac Brown Band.” Austin plans to continue songwriting for his solo project but might be weaving in a bit of mainstream, in the style of his John Scott Sherrill/Shawn Camp co-write “Fiddlin’ Around,” featured on Dierks Bentley’s 2010 bluegrass album Up on the Ridge. “I love writing a three-minute song with a hook that would grab a five-hundred-pound marlin as much as I like writing something that goes, ‘okay, after the bridge, it’s going to open up and just go wide.’”Indeed, “wide” is what Jeff Austin is all about. He wants new and different, complex and interesting. He wants everything the music world has to offer, and he’s willing to work hard to get it. web: www.jeffaustin.comvid: https://youtu.be/opvrBq-HPR4 Front Country In a wood-paneled country dive bar in the shadow of the San Francisco skyline, Front Country forged a sound that lies somewhere between indie folk and Americana—a genre some might call “Roots Pop”: the past is discernible with a wink and a nod, and the future is here. Like a carpenter building a rocket ship, there is a whimsy to Front Country’s perspective that takes an active, imaginative listener to appreciate. It’s not a sound based on current trends of what any mainstream audience has asked for, it is a new perspective looking to find a new audience. On their latest album, Other Love Songs, Front Country melds the ferocious energy of lead singer Melody Walker with a band of wickedly creative instrumentalists, building on songwriting influences as far afield as King Crimson or tUnE-yArDs. They’re working to translate the incredibly intricate arrangements and structures of the best pop songs into an organic, on-the-fly acoustic string band. web: http://www.frontcountryband.comvid: https://youtu.be/3CSaT6JI7vA

Asheville Gallery of Art May 2019 Show “The Color of Rain” “The Color of Rain” for May at Asheville Gallery of Art Asheville Gallery of Art’s May show, “The Color of Rain,” will feature the work of Cheryl Keefer, who is well known for her atmospheric rainy street scenes and luminous landscapes. The show runs May 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, May 3, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. Some people find rain disconcerting, but the artist says she sees opportunities for hope, even joy, in the rain. “The quality of light is what it’s all about. I am always excited by the first brush stroke on the canvas. As the tension between light and shadow intensifies I tend to forget subject matter and focus on rendering my feelings about the scene.” Her work is noted for a soft nostalgia, a bitter-sweetness found in her misty streets and gloaming skies, that express the closing of another day. “I can be profoundly moved by the mundane. Simple, sensual experiences, the aroma of an open-air restaurant, the moist reflection of a street light, cool shade on a summer afternoon, entice me to capture not only colors, but emotion as well on my canvas. Through my work I try to offer viewers a place they can open their hearts and reflect, and possibly even find hope.” When Cheryl was very young, her mother, a teacher, provided her with pencils and paper and encouraged her to create. From then on Cheryl always knew she wanted to be an artist. She has a bachelor’s degree in art education, and a master’s degree in special education and art history from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. She took graduate painting instruction at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She has developed a student/mentor-like relationship with some of the master artists who have impressed her most. Among her favorites are Whistler, Sargent, Corot, and Ivanov. Cheryl resides in Buncombe County, NC, and maintains a studio in The Ramp, on Riverside Dr. in Asheville. When she is not in the studio, Cheryl spends time with her family and is an avid tennis player. Keefer’s work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members, will be on display and for sale through the month of May. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

with Eternal Summers
The title Soft Sounds From Another Planet alludes to the promise of something that may or may not be there. Like a hope in something more. The songs are about human resilience and the strength it takes to claw out of the darkest of spaces.Michelle Zauner wrote the debut Japanese Breakfast album in the weeks after her mother died of cancer, thinking she would quit music entirely once it was done. That wasnt the case. When Psychopomp was released to acclaim in 2016, she was forced to confront her grief. Zauner would find find herself reliving traumatic memories multiple times a day during interviews, trying to remain composed while discussing the most painful experience of her life. Her sophomore album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, is a transmutation of mourning, a reflection that turns back on the cosmos in search of healing.I want to be a woman of regimen, Zauner sings over a burbling synth on the albums opening track Diving Woman. This serves as Zauners mission statement: stick to the routine lest you get derailed, dont cling to the past, dont descend. In fact, ascend to the stars; Zauner found artistic solace removed from Earth, in outer space and science fiction. I used the theme as a means to disassociate from trauma, she explains. Space used as a place of fantasy. And yet, Soft Sounds From Another Planet isnt a concept album. Over the course of 12 tracks, Zauner explores an expansive thematic universe, a cohesive outpouring of unlike parts structured to create a galaxy of her own design. In the instrumental Planetary Ambience, synths communicate the way extraterrestrials might, and on the shapeshifting single Machinist, which Zauner has been performing live for over a year now, she details the sci-fi narrative of a woman falling in love with a machine. Its pure fiction, she explains, But it can map onto real relationships in a relevant way. The track, which begins with spoken-word ambience, moves into autotune 80s pop bliss and ends with a sultry saxophone solo, perfectly marries the experience: theres a perceptible humanity in mechanical, bodily events.Within its astral production, much of Soft Sounds From Another Planet stays grounded. Road Head is the last chest compression in attempt to resuscitate a doomed relationship, while the penultimate track This House is an acoustic dirge that honors Zauners chosen family. The baroque pop Boyish has a haunting, crystalline clarity that recalls the pathos of a Roy Orbison ballad, while Body is a Blade embraces the dark intimacy of Zauners Pacific Northwest heroes Elliott Smith and Mount Eerie. With help from co-producer Craig Hendrix (who also co-produced Little Big Leagues debut) and Jorge Elbrecht, (Ariel Pink, Tamaryn) who mixed the album, Zauner recontextualizes her bedroom pop beginnings, expanding and maturing her sound. The sheer massiveness of the big room production on Soft Sounds From Another Planet introduces listeners to a new Japanese Breakfast. Zauners familiar, capacious voice will serve as their guide.Your body is a blade that moves while your brain is writhing, she sings. Knuckled under pain you mourn but your blood is flowing. Theres discernible pain in the phrasing, Zauner recognizing limitation, a lack of control, but then subverting the feeling, creating her own musical language for confronting trauma. Where Psychopomp introduced the world to Japanese Breakfast, Soft Sounds dives deeper. It builds space where there is none, and suggests that in the face of tragedy, we find ways to keep on living.

Description:

Jim James has spent the better part of almost two decades as the lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of My Morning Jacket.  Through seven studio albums, My Morning Jacket has grown into one of the most acclaimed rock and roll bands in the world. The New York Times heralded the band as, “…the new kings of expand-your-mind, religious-experience rock…”  Their last three albums, 2008’s Evil Urges, 2011’s Circuital and 2015’s The Waterfall, each received Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Album — the latter debuting at number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.  Alongside the band’s recording and touring, James has maintained a steady, bordering on voracious, flow of work.

In 2013, James released his debut solo record, Regions of Light and Sound of God.  James wrote, produced and played all instruments himself (except for strings and some percussion) for the record, which was inspired by life and the 1929 novel (written in woodcuts), ‘God’s Man’ by Lynd Ward. It was named one of the best albums of the year by PASTE, MTV and FUSE and was “the year’s first great record” (GQ). A performance of track “A New Life” on the then-hosted Late Night earned high praise from the now-Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon just this year: “”…to this day my favorite musical performance was ‘A New Life’ on Late Night that we did…He [Jim James] is fantastic. I love him”.

In 2016 James released the politically charged solo record, Eternally EvenRolling Stone described as, “nine flamboyantly spiritual songs wrapped in creamy electronics and set to funk and hip hop beats…an eccentric, gently compelling pleasure. [Jim James] renders his change gospel with conversational grace, Bill Withers warmth, Sly Stone optimism and Neil Young conviction”. The album’s release saw him embark on a national tour with appearances on the Tonight Show, the Late Late Show with James Corden and a debut at #1 on Billboard Alternative chart. The album topped many year-end ‘best’ lists, with NPR praising the record’s “arresting, soulful … transcendent tunes”.

James’ released his third solo album, Uniform Distortion, in June 2019, which was received with immediate acclaim. “A giddily powerful response to these troubled times,” hailed the Guardian in its 4-star review. “His mix of musical joie de vivre and lyrical home truths prove fiendishly effective.” The Washington Post said, “With driving guitar riffs and catchy hooks combined with his signature soaring vocals, James delivers an utterly engaging, hard-charging, straight-ahead record that almost feels like a throwback to a different era while also being very much current,” while American Songwriter claimed, “”There are enough artistic twists and turns to please even the most dedicated Jacket fan, showing that James remains as musically edgy as ever on an album that pulses with energy, enthusiasm and the restless spirit James has always personified.” Four months after Uniform Distortion was released, James followed with the companion record of Uniform Clarity comprising acoustic renditions of the songs in a more stripped down and honest response to what went before.

Although splitting his time between LA and Kentucky, James has little plan to remain in one place. James has continued expanding on his zealous lists of credits, lending his voice to albums by the likes of the Roots, David Lynch, Brandi Carlile and John Fogerty and partnering with other artists on numerous side projects such as New Multitudes, Monsters of Folk, and T-Bone Burnett’s The New Basement Tapes. Known for his live performances, James has found himself in the touring company of those like Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and Bob Dylan – even appearing in the Dylan-inspired film, I’m Not There – and My Morning Jacket supported Roger Waters as his surprise backing band during famed Newport Folk Festival in 2015. He has embedded himself in the world of film and television, be it through the use of his music in various projects or his long-running relationships with those in the field.  James has also established himself as a producer in his own right, producing records by Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dean Wareham, Basia Bulat, Amo Amo, and Ray Lamontagne’s Ouroboros (2016), the same year in which he collaborated with NASA for the launch of their Juno Mission and Sundance Film Festival and their “Freedom of Expression” event.  In the fall of 2018, James embarked on successful, intimate, career-spanning solo acoustic tour, which saw him play sold out dates through historic theatres and performing arts centers across the United States. In Spring 2019, James will set out on the Jim James Presents Uniform Distortion Tour, playing the complete record with a full band for the first time nationally.

Michael Murphy, the founder of the Esalen Institute, stated that this work "...points the way toward the kind of transformative practice we need to realize our greatest potentials. From a personal note, Dr. Hasty says, "When I look over the course of my life, there is no book that has done more for me than Savitri. It is the greatest source of understanding I have ever acquired. Not a day goes by that I do not study it and seek to allow it to penetrate my thinking. It is truly the summit of everything I have ever sought in my own personal journey ofconsciousness, self-discovery, and joy." Join Dr. Hasty for a purposeful, meaningful and enlightening experience. Owning a copy of Savitri is not required. FAQs What should I expect? In three weekends you can get certified as a Thai Yoga Bodywork Practitioner, while learning three hours of relaxing and therapeutic Thai Massage techniques. These can then be combined in various ways to create individualized treatments for your friends, family and/or clients. You can choose to take single days, a weekend or the first two weekends to learn the full two hour 'foundational flow.' Add in the final weekend for therapeutic applications and certification*.    With a strong emphasis on proper body dynamics and how to use leverage, you will learn how to effortlessly apply pressure to sore muscles, energy lines & trigger points as well as learn how to bring your partner through a series of assisted yoga stretches to open, relax and rejuvenate your clients. The Therapeutic weekend will focus on the more creative and advanced Thai Massage techniques. In addition, you will learn how to apply PNF techniques into the stretches to target and release specific muscles with ease. We will look at how to treat various conditions such as sciatic pain, tight hamstrings, and low back pain. We will also learn techniques to easily release the Psoas, the QL and how to bring the hips into balance.     This training has been refined for over a decade to offer all students the ability to master these skills in a short amount of time. After completing the course, all dedicated practitioners should be able to offer a profoundly healing and delightful treatment.   Each day you will learn a new thirty minute routine focusing on a specific body area in a specific position, ultimately resulting in over three hours of techniques. Courses can be taken individually or you can sign up for the full training at a discount. “I will have poetry in my life. And adventure. And love. Love above all.”

Montford Park Players, an Asheville theatrical tradition, is proud to announce their upcoming production of Shakespeare in Love. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from May 3 through May 25 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. This performance like ALL of Montford Park Players’ shows will be absolutely FREE to attend.

Penniless and indebted to two demanding producers, struggling young playwright William Shakespeare is tormented by writer’s block until he meets the beautiful Viola de Lesseps, daughter of a wealthy merchant, whose fiery passion for poetry and drama leaves her secretly longing to be an actor. Both are despondent when they learn that Viola’s father has promised her to the stuffy Lord Wessex in order to gain a title for their family.
Under the veil of secrecy, Will and Viola’s passionate love affair becomes the basis of the very play he is writing – Romeo and Juliet. With opening night – and the wedding day – fast approaching, the plots race toward a parallel conclusion. Will it all work out in the end or are the two star-crossed lovers destined for tragedy?
“Makes you feel grateful to be alive.” / Independent
“A heady celebration of the act of theatre.” / Guardian
“A swooning delight.” / Daily Mail

Montford Park Players has been presenting Shakespeare and other classical works to the Asheville community since 1973, and has since grown to be one of Western North Carolina’s most beloved and well-known cultural attractions.
