NTER ARMAs music resists generalization and categorization, but if theres one thing thats consistently true, its that the VA quintet possesses an unparalleled sense of scope. Few artists today accurately convey the complexity that INTER ARMA (Latin for in times of war) does the band creates terrible and often hauntingly beautiful portraits of humanity through music that is deeply organic yet still mystical and modern. INTER ARMA are just as committed to the live circuit as they are to their records: the band has performed extensively throughout Europe and the US, sharing the stage with the likes of Kylesa, Baroness, Cough, Royal Thunder, Black Tusk, Ulcerate, Russian Circles, Windhand, and dozens of others. INTER ARMAs raw, uninhibited approach merges doom metal, psychedelic sludge, black metal, prog and more, and over the course of the last ten years, has established the band as a uniquely innovative force in contemporary extreme metal.Founded in Richmond in 2006, the versatile and genre-defying five-piece released their debut full-length Sundown via Forcefield Records in 2010, and like all great artists, had a well-defined sound right from the start. Sundown found INTER ARMA widespread critical acclaim, and, combined with the bands relentless touring schedule and DIY grit, quickly helped INTER ARMA make a name for themselves in the underground. Following Sundown, the band released the 12 EP Destroyer via Toxic Assets Records. That record was strong enough to catch the attention of Relapse Records, who signed INTER ARMA later in 2012, and in 2013, the band unleashed the monolithic Sky Burial, a doomy, hour-long excursion through unpredictable textures and timbres. Just two years later, the band followed Sky Burial with The Cavern, a 45+ minute, single-song EP. Originally written during the summer of 2009, then slowly reworked and perfected, The Cavern was recorded in 2013 during breaks from the bands non-stop tours. Both The Cavern and Sky Burial were widely hailed as some of the best records of their respective years and garnered INTER ARMA accolades from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone, and many other publications worldwide. Two years after The Cavern, INTER ARMA are poised to return with their heaviest and most multifaceted work to date. Paradise Gallows is more than an hour of lush, colorful melodies and textures blended with the heaviness of the earths impending death. Like the bands previous works, the new album Paradise Gallows is direct and foreboding while maintaining a nuanced, artful perspective. INTER ARMAs signature palette of dissonant high-end and abyssal low-end has been augmented with swathes of thick, impressionistic melody that lend Paradise Gallows a truly biblical sense of scale, both lyrically and in terms of the albums sonic content. Harsh and acoustic passages (including the bands first-ever foray into clean vocals) spar with complex rhythmic structures across nine sweeping tracks of expansive, progressive heaviness. The album was again recorded with Mikey Allred (Yautja, Hivelords) at Dark Art Audio in Nashville, and features gorgeous cover art by Orion Landau. Dense, funereal, and richly evocative, Paradise Gallows is a rich blend of doom, post-metal, sludge, and black and death metal, and is a singular and powerful new addition to the bands already monumental discography.

From master baker, cook, and Zen priest Edward Espe Brown comes a collection of timeless essays on Zen, food, and life itself. Brown was one of the first Westerners to be ordained a priest by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, who had hoped that Zen might be transformed into a vibrant new form in the West. In The Most Important Point, Brown fulfills Suzuki's wish with 60 essays that are distinctly American yet preserve the roots of traditional Japanese Zen. Drawing from his time in the kitchen and on the cushion, Brown explores a range of topics, from basic sitting practice to making the "perfect" biscuit and much more. "In the words of my teacher," reflects Brown, "the most important point is to find out what is the most important point." Flavored with wise insights and irreverent humor, The Most Important Point brings together a treasury of teachings to inspire your own discovery.

Ratboys

LinksBorn out of fierce friendship and a mutual affection for melody, Chicago’s Ratboys – anchored by the partnership of Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan – aim to ‘write songs that tell stories and honor the intimacy of memory,’ according to Steiner.

GN, the group’s second full-length album via Topshelf Records, offers a bevy of tales, laments and triumphs, which recount near-tragedies by the train tracks, crippling episodes of loneliness, remembrances of a deceased family pet with freezer burn, and on and on. The songs shift and breathe as worlds all their own, tied together by the group’s self-proclaimed ‘post-country’ sound, which combines moments of distortion and a DIY aesthetic with a devotion to simple songwriting and ties to the Americana sounds of years past.

Drawing influence from the down-to-earth sincerity of late-90s Sheryl Crow and the confessional confidence of Kim Deal and Jenny Lewis, the songs on GN (aka ‘goodnight’) “largely detail experiences of saying goodbye, finding your way home, and then figuring out what the hell to do once you’re back,” says Steiner. The songs chosen to close both sides of the record – the slow-burning ‘Crying About the Planets’ and quizzical ‘Peter the Wild Boy’ – unpack the respective journeys of two real people who were quite literally lost and found. ‘Crying’ tells the survival story of Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson from a first-person perspective, and ‘Peter’ reflects on the life of a feral child in Germany who was eventually adopted by the King of England,’ according to Steiner. ‘Writing as and about these people is the best way I can attempt to empathize with them and really just wrap my mind around these bits of history that otherwise might not get talked about. And it helps me understand my own experiences a little bit better,’ she says.

Certain personal stories – the tour adventures recapped in ‘GM,’ the struggle to learn to show affection as divulged in ‘Molly’ – find Ratboys just as eagerly exploring subject matter that comes from within, and then illustrating the highs and lows with soaring hooks and plaintive ones. Even in the moments that lie somewhere between bliss and misery, a tension persists between Steiner’s sweet vocal delivery and Sagan’s physical, almost-off-the-hinges guitar playing that lends each song a deeper sense of color and movement.

Steiner and Sagan felt the impulse to make music together from the get-go – they first met as university students, quickly put out an EP together, and started performing as an acoustic two-piece in dorm rooms and backyards. During the next few years, the friends traveled separately, eventually reunited, and recorded what would become the first Ratboys record, AOID, which the folks at GoldFlakePaint describe as ‘a gleaming, joyous, raucous display of melodic indie-rock.’

After a year and a half of touring the US and Europe as a plugged-in full band (featuring the additions of drums, bass, and trumpet), the members of Ratboys returned to Chicago and holed up at Atlas Studios for two weeks to record with engineer Mikey Crotty (who had previously worked with the group on the songs ‘Not Again’ and ‘Light Pollution’). ‘This time around, we were lucky enough to feature the talents of friends who play the pedal steel, accordion, cello and violin to give the songs an extra something,’ says Steiner. ‘Dave finally got to show off his ridiculous skills on the pocket piano, and the whole thing felt like one big loving experiment.’

Ratboys keep the good times going in 2018 with a new EP called GL (aka Good Luck). Featuring four songs recorded shortly after the GN sessions, this new companion piece expands upon themes of isolation and memory, while focusing closely on the ups and downs of personal relationships.

‘Each of the songs on GL sounds like its own little world, which is what we set out to do,’ Steiner says. With each song sounding distinct from the rest, the EP offers up four different takes on the sounds of heartache.

On the heels of their newest release, you can find Ratboys on the road, playing songs old and new all over North America and Europe.

Composting with worms is a simple process that diverts food waste from landfills, while producing super-enriched soil amendment.  Come learn not only the basics about worms and worm composting, but also the science behind successfully gardening with worm products.  Participants in this workshop will leave with an 18-gallon Rubbermaid bin which they have prepared with bedding and food for the worms, as well as ½ pound of red wigglers.  Everything will be complete for a successful and operating worm bin to be maintained at home by the participant. Imagine being one degree of separation from luminaries such as Stephen Hawking, Douglas Adams, and others. After a lifetime in book publishing, Peter Guzzardi had edited a remarkable group of diverse authors, from Stephen Hawking to Deepak Chopra, from Carol Burnett to Douglas Adams, from Byron Katie to Geneen Roth. Yet everything he'd learned from working with them felt oddly familiar. One day it suddenly became clear: all that wisdom had its roots in a film he'd watched as a child, "The Wizard of Oz." That revelation led to this book. It's a jewel box of insights drawn from Dorothy's heroic journey from helpless in Kansas to powerful in Oz, then back to Kansas, transformed by what she found along the way. In Emeralds of Oz: Life Lessons From Over the Rainbow, we discover what the most-watched film in history has to teach us. With that knowledge we become free to embark on our own journey, having activated the power to direct our lives that we possessed all along.

Genre: Ski RockCover: $5 Suggested Donation @ DoorShow: 10PMAges: 21+Tenth Mountain DivisionThis bands ruminating respect for music of the past, and deep dedication towards the creative crafting of a new sound, sets Tenth Mountain Division apart in the Colorado music scene. “Tenth Mountain Division speaks the language of Colorado, the language of the mountains.” – Noah Stein – CU IndependentOriginating from Boulder, CO, founders Winston Heuga (Mandolin) and MJ Ouimette (Electric/Acoustic Guitar) originally sought to create an acoustic bluegrass outfit. After a few years dedicated to playing bluegrass, the duo transitioned to an electrified, rock’n’roll sound. Through out its preliminary years finding their roots in college and playing with an array of different line-ups, the band finally found their permanent line up in May of 2017 with the addition of bassist and vocalist Andrew Cooney. Drummer Tyler Gwynn and the ever-talented keyboard player Campbell Thomas form the quintet that creates a diverse soundscape combining soaring electric guitar leads and jabbing keys while retaining its roots in bluegrass with Heuga’s incomparable mandolin style. The rhythmic interplay of Cooney’s driving bass fused with Gwynn’s incendiary drumming round out the unique sounding band that is truly a style of its own; what the band refers to as “Ski Rock”. Tenth Mountain Division has evolved greatly since its inception but retains its roots in the American musical styles of rock, Americana, bluegrass, prog and the crossroads between them all. Since TMD’s first national tour upon earning a slot at the 2016 Summer Camp Music Festival with headlining acts like Tom Petty’s Mud Crutch, Moe, and Umphrey’s Mcgee, the band has embarked all across this country playing esteemed venues like Boulder’s Fox Theater, Baton Rouge’s Varsity Theatre, Austin’s The Parish, Nashville’s Acme Feed & Seed, Baltimore’s 8X10, and many more; The band has played festivals including Summer Camp, Aiken Bluegrass, Beanstalk, Head for the Hills, Pardee Palooza and after parties for the likes of Dead & Company, Twiddle, STS9, Moon Taxi, and Marcus King Band; and have had the honor of sharing the stage with artists including Nicki Bluhm, Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band/ Bela Fleck), Bill Payne (Little Feet), Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band), Jeremy Garret ( Infamous String Dusters), Andy Thorn and Alwyn Robinson (Leftover Salmon), Jon Stickley Trio, and contemporaries such as The Magic Beans and Spafford. This is only the beginning, stay tuned for all that’s to come!web: http://www.tmdtunes.com/vid: https://youtu.be/n9KzZsZvaZ8

Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre and the students of The New Studio of Dance present The Mystery of the Seahorse, a thrilling tale of love and bravery. Set in an endangered underwater reef with cartoon-type characters, this story explores the themes of ecology and pollution. A vibrant and colorful performance, The Mystery of the Seahorse will not only be entertaining and beautiful, but will also teach the lesson of why we need to keep our oceans clean. Giles Collards giant puppet head creations and colorful sets compliment the inventive and original choreography of Susan Collard, the staff of New Studio of Dance and even some of the students themselves. Audiences are in for a treat as they are transported underwater for this lively and entertaining full-length dance theater spectacular. The New Studio of Dance was established in 1970 and offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging dance education to young students of the community. Not only are there the usual classes in ballet, tap, and modern; but there are also classes in composition, swing, belly dance, and more. As the students become older and more experienced, they help to design their own dance program and are given a lot of creative freedom to discover who they are as dance artists. Dont miss The Mystery of the Seahorse for a colorful, underwater treat. With two weeks of performances, this show will be a great way for children of all ages to spring into summer!

Hairball is a Rock & Roll experience you won’t forget. A band puts on a concert – Hairball puts on an event! The lights, sound, video screens, smoke, fire, blood, bombs, confetti, spiders, snakes & monsters (oh my) and the screaming hoards of rabid Hairball fans create an event – an event that hits you so hard, it’ll take a few days to recover! Rock & Roll will NEVER die!!!

Vocalists Bobby, Kris Vox, and Joe Dandy lead the band through a 2+ hour, mind-blowing, and drop-dead accurate homage to some of the biggest arena acts in the world. Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, and Aerosmith are but a few of the acts fans will see brought to life. The Hairball stage becomes an entirely new rock concert before your very eyes countless times throughout the night.

The motor that drives the Hairball dragster consists of Freaky on the electric bass, Billy on the drums, and Happy on the lead guitar. These Rock & Roll soldiers pride themselves on nailing some of the most memorable licks and chops of all time, while adding their own style and flare that they’ve cultivated over decades of tireless performing. These guys live and breathe Rock & Roll!

2018 finds Hairball celebrating its 18th year of rocking hundreds of thousands of people across the country. Every day it adds more characters, more pyrotechnics, more lights, more sound, more props, more surprises…more everything! While Happy often tells the audience “Today is the first day is the rest of your life!” Hairball performs every show as though it could be its last. Every night is a 100% full-on, no-holds-barred, exciting, chaotic, fiery party that has to be experienced to be believed!

As important to Hairball as the music are its fans. While many bands claim to have the best fans in the world, Hairball actually has! Whether they’re 8 or 85, Hairball fans bring an unparalleled enthusiasm and energy to the show that completes the Arena Rock experience. Hairball knows it wouldn’t exist without its fans, and takes every opportunity to let them know that. Whether it’s a pre-show meet and greet, hanging out at the merch booth, or chatting online, Hairball has a lot in common with its fans and it’s always a good time when they get together.

Don’t confuse Hairball with the countless “’80s Tribute” bands across the country. Hairball is an event; an attitude and expression of music and showmanship that isn’t a retro-flashback. It’s a way of life…and it’s not going away!

On the surface, TV Girl is a sunny, throwback splash of 60s French pop and southern California soul. Yet, under that shiny veneer lays a dark heart, beating with sharp wit and cynical alienation, and the music is all the more alluring for it. TV Girl, comprised of Brad Petering, Jason Wyman, and Wyatt Harmon, was formed in 2010 by Petering as an outlet to blend the love of Spector-esque girl-group pop with an emerging interest in hip-hop. Featuring shimmering vocals and sampled beats, the self-titled debut EP of the same year turned heads online immediately; the groups lush vintage rhythms and timeless pop hooks were even making waves on the BBC. They continued to release increasingly popular EPs and mixtapes between tours. In 2014, TV Girl unveiled their first full-length, the critically acclaimed French Exit. The album keeps true to the TV Girl charm with a bevy of electronic samplings infused throughout light and airy guitars, whirring organs, and ethereal vocals. However, this record is not all summer nostalgia, and there are plenty of times where French Exit reads like disaffected fiction. The moody characters in these songs are fueled by revenge as often as love, underpinned by desperation and a deep yearning to connect.Their 2016 follow up, Who Really Cares, finds the band doubling down on their heavy use of samples. Combining the aesthetic of 90s hip hop with modern psychedelic pop, Who Really Cares offers a glimpse into the psyche of a love scorned twenty-something.TV Girls latest album, Death Of A Party Girl, sustains the dream pop, neo-psychedelic feel of previous work. Petering delivers prosaic storytelling in third-person narration, recounting tales of wistful, romantic flings and mini-dramas starring various shades of the archetypal manic pixie dream girl. The songs are echoing and surreal, cut with samples of dialogue from movies and radio shows that convey a grainy, vintage feel. Standouts include King of Echo Park, its beachy vibe conjuring images of skinny palm trees, graffitied skateparks, and humming lowriders; "7 Days Til Sunday", a swaying, upbeat bop where the narrator reminisces of rooftop parties and one night stands in Manhattan; and the intoxicating "Every Stupid Actress".Social Media Linksfacebook.com/tvgirlztwitter.com/tvgirlztvgirl.bandcamp.comFeatured YouTube video: Pick one featured YouTube video, like a music video or recap videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2-_sP5v-Zo

Their music has been described as "Radiohead meets Riverdance"; Celtic-inspired, exciting, eclectic and unpredictable. House of Hamill’s music occupies a space between traditional Irish music and sophisticated indie/pop. Together, they write unusual, new fiddle tunes and exciting, unpredictable original songs while breathing new life into traditional and contemporary songs. Both are confident and unique lead vocalists, and the blend of their two voices in harmony is hypnotic and irresistible. Whether House of Hamill is playing songs from their debut album "Wide Awake" (2016) or stomping through a set of original jigs and reels from their follow-up "March Through Storms" (2018), their chemistry onstage is always engaging and often hilarious. Spend an hour listening and you'll leave with tired feet, a huge smile, and a new appreciation for the versatility of folk instruments in a modern context. The Wild Feathers are a group that is most at home on the highway, forever looking ahead to the next city and the next shared experience onstage. When youre on the road, youre like cowboys in the Wild West going out into some neon frontier, says singer-guitarist Taylor Burns.Their new album Greetings from the Neon Frontier finds The Wild Feathers reuniting with producer Jay Joyce, who oversaw the groups 2013 self-titled debut and 2016s Lonely Is a Lifetime. The band packing a three-vocalist punch in Taylor, singer-guitarist Ricky Young and singer-bassist Joel King, along with drummer Ben Dumas embrace their more countrified influences. Sounding partly like a lost Eagles album and the record Tom Petty never got to make, the album satisfies with thick harmonies, jangly guitars, in-the-pocket grooves and smart, tight songwriting.Their magic lies in their collaborations with one another. Its a fact of which each musician is keenly aware. Were all smart enough to realize that while were pretty good on our own, were great together, says Ricky. Whatever this is, its special.

Description:
The Band of Heathens We were on the road somewhere in New England in early 2017, when the topic of conversation drifted toward the troubled social climate in the country. We all shared a sadness that bordered on despair at the relentless stream of unsettling news of corruption, social injustice, and an overall lack of moral decency.  We related similar experiences with how divisiveness was affecting those around us, how families were being torn apart over political and social issues. Eventually the weight of it all left us feeling quite solemn and the conversation trailed off — we returned to our thoughts and personal reflection as we rolled up the interstate. After a long period of silence, we felt like we needed to lighten the mood, and nothing heals the soul quite like music… Trevor went to an obscure and out-of-print Ray Charles album that he had ripped from vinyl to mp3 to listen to on the road, A Message From The People…how appropriate.  Some of us were vaguely familiar with the context of this record — that it was released in the early 70’s (April ’72) during a time of great social upheaval in America. Nixon, Vietnam, race riots, protests in almost every major city…the country had fallen on some hard times.  Just by glancing at the LP’s artwork it’s easy to deduce that Ray had a message in mind when he made this record. The cover is a painting of Ray in a reflective pose next to a group of children with different ethnicities. They all sit beneath a Mt. Rushmore-like image with the faces of Bobby Kennedy, Abe Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr. and JFK.  With the first notes of the opening track “Lift Every Voice And Sing”, Ray had our undivided attention. Often referred to as the Black National Anthem, Ray’s genius is in full flight from the get-go, singing with incredible jubilation and hope, hitting us like a ton of bricks. It seemed like Ray had picked up where our conversation had trailed off just moments before…we were really LISTENING. The second track, “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong”, he sings with such a powerful sentiment of loneliness and helplessness — the plight of many in society who are forgotten or ignored. We remained silent, intently listening and reflecting on the meaning of every word he sang. Halfway through the record a couple of us were in tears. The messages in each song that Ray had carefully selected back in 1972 rang as true today as they did during the turbulent times they were initially released. In these moments, Ray’s voice became the voice of an elder — a true master was speaking to us from the past.  There is sorrow, protest, and anger but also resolve, hope, and deliverance.  On the final track of the record, Ray saved for us his most powerful message and the perfect coda; the definitive version of “America The Beautiful” is absolutely glorious.  It is quite simply the apotheosis of soul.  “America! God done shed his grace on thee! He crowned thy good, he told me he would, with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!” Just like that, the masterpiece that is A Message From The People came to an end. Breaking the ensuing silence, Gordy turned around and said, “What if we covered this album? People really need to hear these songs again.”  The idea was hatched right then and there. Fast forward almost a year later. In December 2017 we were working as a backing band on a variety of projects for other artists being produced by Gordy.  The sessions took place at the Finishing School, a studio built by close friend, producer, and musical collaborator, George Reiff, who tragically succumbed cancer in May ’17 after a 10-month fight. The studio had been dark since George’s passing.  With the blessing of the Reiff family, the lights were turned back on and we went to work for a few weeks. The final four days of session time were blocked off for us to work on something of our own. A few weeks prior to the sessions it was collectively decided that we would use that time to take a shot at recording some of A Message From The People. Working alongside our close friend (and George’s right-hand-man in the studio) Steve Christensen, there was a palpable vibration in the air. It was somber but also very peaceful. Our expectations were tempered, as we knew that doing any Ray Charles record justice was going to be a real challenge — let alone one with such lush arrangements. On top of that, we were working in a new bass player, Jesse Wilson. These sessions would be the first time we had worked with him in a studio environment (which can be a crucible for some). In spite of all that, the collective mentality, while unspoken, seemed to be “let’s give this a shot, this could be cool, there’s no pressure here.” To our amazement, after four days, we had finished the record. In between takes we frequently reminisced about George and were even visited at the studio by some of George’s close friends and family. Feeling confident that what we had accomplished was going to be worthy of a release, we unanimously agreed that it would be dedicated to the memory of George and that proceeds would go to a charitable organization that focused on social justice. Going forward, our hope is that our performance of these songs has sufficient merit to carry the listener to the musical feeling that we strived to infuse in these recordings — a spirit of brotherhood, hope and understanding, liberty, and justice for all.

Description:

To many, Lady Lamb is an enigma. Her songs are at once intimate and unbridled both deeply personal and existentially contemplative. Aly Spaltro is a fearless performer who can command a pitch black stage with nothing more than her voice. Yet, when the band bursts in and the lights come up, what began as a demonstration of restraint shifts seamlessly into an emphatic snarl. On her newest work, After, Spaltro explores dualities further giving equal attention to both the internal and external, the before and after. Her most palpable fears and memories are on display here, with a familiar vulnerability even more direct than her last effort. After boasts driving rhythms, bold melodies, candid lyricism, and a growling sonic stamp that is all her own.Spaltro's formative years were full of change moving houses, cities, and countries every three years until she landed in her family's home state of Maine. It was here that Spaltro found her voice among thousands of films at Bart & Greg's DVD Explosion, an independent rental store in the small coastal town of Brunswick. During the day Spaltro would rent movies to the locals. At night she would lock up, pull out her 8-track recorder, and create songs completely uninhibited by musical conventions, learning to play and sing as she hit record. These creations brought forth nearly one hundred recordings, twelve of which were carefully curated and fully realized on her 2013 full-length studio debut Ripely Pine (released on Ba Da Bing! Records). Ripely Pine garnered praise for its lyrical intricacies, emotive vocals, and often unpredictable musicality, introducing Spaltro as a formidable new artist. In between tours, Spaltro returned home, focusing with laser-like intent on writing, arranging, and demoing the songs on After. These new works which found Spaltro co-producing with her Ripely Pine partner Nadim Issa at his Brooklyn studio, Let 'Em In are sonically vibrant, with an assertive use of grit and brightness. Thematically, they provide direct insight into Spaltro's rumination on mortality, family, friendships, and leaving home. There are many songs on After that explore themes of a much larger scale. In "Heretic" Spaltro sings of a childhood UFO sighting in Arizona. In "Batter" she dies in a plane crash, while in "Spat Out Spit" she questions whether she was even born at all. Alternatively, in "Billions of Eyes" Spaltro can "only see into her suitcase," her mind simultaneously present and wandering as she "gnaws [her] way back home." The tender and sparse "Ten" delves into her mother's childhood diary, giving the listener a clear view throughout into some of Spaltro's warmest memories of her loved ones. Ripely Pine was marked by an undeniable passion and confidence, but where it sometimes lacked in personal narrative and directness is where After shines. The last line on After encompasses the self-assurance of the work as a whole, stating "I know where I come from." This theme is a constant throughout After, as Spaltro seeks to allow the listener to move in closer than ever before, to reflect on the past with grace, and envision the future with fervor. Spaltro invites us to contemplate the dualities that make us human, encouraging the celebration of both fear and love: internally and externally, before and after.
