with Altopalo, Beshken
"Repetition is a form of change," reads one of Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies. Seth Haley knows the concept well, and his style of technicolour synth-wave takes the mantra as a challenge -- how much emotion can one man convey through his machines? Six years ago, Galactic Melt introduced space traveller Com Truise and his journey through far-flung galaxies, before mini-epics Wave 1 and Silicon Tare expanded the story in further cosmic detail. And now Iteration concludes this sprawling saga. True to its name, the album is built on Com Truise hallmarks: neon-streaked melodies, big drums, robotic grooves, bleary nostalgia. But Iteration is also the most elegant and streamlined that Haley's music has ever sounded. At the album's heart is an elaborate narrative, one full of longing, hope, anxiety, and triumph. Iteration illustrates the last moments Com Truise spends on the perilous planet Wave 1, before he and his alien love escape its clutches to live in peace. Album opener ."..Of Your Fake Dimension" launches the interstellar drama with its anthemic swells and widescreen sound design, before lovesick songs like "Dryswch" and "Propagation" outline scenes wrought with cybernetic pathos. In "Isostasy," the synaesthetic quality of Haley's compositions is presented in ultra-high-definition. Later, the frantic rhythms of "Syrthio" conjure images of panicked flight as Haley's gorgeous synth melodies gild the action in quiet heartbreak. Then comes the resounding "When Will You Find The Limit...," when Iteration's pain and sadness finds liberation in the vast unknown. The closing title track ends it all in a gush of majestic revelry. So goes the winding story that Iteration tells, and yet there's more behind its telling. "I try hard not to write from my personal life, but it's inevitably going to seep into the music," Haley explains. "It's basically like I'm scoring this film in my head, but that film I'm scoring is also somehow my life." There are glimpses of the difficult time the East Coast native spent adjusting to a new life in Los Angeles, fighting homesickness and burnout while also touring the world. It was a time full of uncertainty, transition, and self-realization. After a year and a half of living in California, Haley finally recaptured his creativity by finding new excitement in his work. "I put more air, more breathing room in the music -- that was the big change," he says. And once that clicked, the album quickly materialized.Such a clear refinement of the Com Truise sound took time to develop, but Iteration is well worth the patience and perseverance it cost. Some of Haley's smartest, catchiest work is here, from the weightless pop heights of "Memory" to "Ternary"'s lush synth-funk. A song like "Vacuume" somehow manages to balance massive bass swells and punishing drums with stuttering angelic gasps, and "Usurper" gracefully pairs subtle poignant melodies with uplifting dance beats. "For me, it feels like change," Haley says of his second album, and yes, this is Com Truise like never before. By embracing the music's inherent nature and peerless qualities, Iteration finds new avenues of expression in its vivid, familiar surroundings.

The Mountain Political Action Committee must meet again. This time, they have to confront a small local Tea Party group…and some of the characters just might be related. Come enjoy a beer and humor based on self-deprecating references to Asheville, the county and even a surprise guest appearance from a local politician giving us an update on the Vance Monument. In an age of polarized divisiveness, can these two groups find common ground? Come to the Magnetic Theatre and find out. The Magnetic Theatre is thrilled to be producing this companion play to Mountain Political Action Committee, both written by local playwright Honor Moor. Audiences will be sure to relate to this local humor, even if they aren’t Asheville natives. Synopsis: The Mountain Political Action Committee has to meet again to protect Asheville - In the Nick of Time! This group of local native Democrats will have to take matters into their own hands in order to stop threats of facism. Fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the hilarity of the true south that is often hidden in plain sight in Asheville. Run, don't walk, and get your ticket for what is becoming a local favorite! In The Nick Of Time – Mountain Political Action Committee Meets Again runs November 1st-23rd at The Magnetic Theatre, located at 375 Depot Street in the River Arts District. Description:
“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” --Samuel Beckett. Rejection is an integral part of being a writer. Stephen King received 30 rejections from publishers before selling Carrie. Kathryn Stockett received 60 rejections from agents before she found representation for The Help. How can we keep from giving up in discouragement as the pile of rejection slips grows? How can we avoid the unproductive emotion of envy when we compare ourselves with others? How can we feel good about our writing lives if we never publish? This workshop will give you practical strategies for managing submissions and attending to self-care so that you don’t give up writing. It will help you redefine success, and present ways to think about your creative life so that you can draw satisfaction from your identity as a writer whether or not you ever get that big publishing contract.  This class meets from 2:30pm-4:30pm on Saturday, November 23, 2019, then adjourns to UpCountry Brewing next door to the Flatiron Writers Room (cost not included with your ticket), where we can commiserate and share our not-yet-success stories. Cost: $45 general admission, $40 for current FWR Co-Working members.  Partial need-based scholarships are available for this workshop. Heather Newton’s novel Under The Mercy Trees (HarperCollins 2011) won the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award, was chosen by the Women’s National Book Association as a Great Group Reads Selection and named an “Okra Pick” by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance, and is forthcoming in audiobook from Dreamscape Media in fall 2019. Her short prose has appeared in Enchanted Conversation Magazine, The Drum, Dirty Spoon and elsewhere. Mixed in with these successes, she has received hundreds of rejections, written novels nobody would publish, made bad judgements, missed opportunities or had them snatched from her by forces outside of her control. In short, she has long experience with failing (or as she likes to call it, “not yet succeeding”) and looks forward to exploring with you ways to fail better.  REFUND POLICY: The Flatiron Writers Room reserves the right to cancel this workshop if not enough people sign up, in which case you will receive a full refund. You may request a refund up until one week before the class starts via Eventbrite or email to flatironwritersroom[at]gmail.com for a full refund. After that date, no refunds will be made.

Join us as we celebrate the life of John Coltrane right here in his home state of North Carolina! The night will feature the Joseph Herbst Big Band, which consists of spectacular musicians coming from New York, Michigan, Texas, and, of course, Asheville, as well as a local spoken word artist. The use of a big band to share Coltrane’s music creates a medium that allows for us to paint a story of his life through music, extrapolating the complex yet beautiful emotions of his playing into a 17-piece ensemble. The night will feature a spoken word artist presenting the words and writings of Coltrane, performed both in between big band pieces backed by Coltrane's music in its simplest form as well as interwoven into the fabric of the performance of the full ensemble. Coltrane’s life and beliefs were intricately linked with his music. A celebration of Coltrane cannot be solely music – it must include all aspects of his life. Through this, Coltrane’s music is still timely today, speaking to the current political and racial state of our nation. This will not just be a historical celebration of Coltrane’s life, but also a reworking of his music and life in present time, making us look inwards and outwards in the way Coltrane would do if he were alive today. The band will perform three of John Coltrane’s most iconic compositions arranged for big band, and three originals inspired by Coltrane’s music, all written by Joseph Herbst. These six tunes are all written in a light that captures the struggles, successes, and ultimate revelation throughout Coltrane’s all too short life. Arrangements: Lonnie’s Lament Giant Steps After the Rain Compositions inspired by: Like Sonny Equinox Pursuance Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Originally from Switzerland, brothers Uwe and Jens Kruger began playing North American folk music at an early age and were particularly inspired by recordings of Doc Watson, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and other progenitors of country, bluegrass and folk music. Their first public performances were as a duo, busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and Western Europe. After gaining a recording contract as well as a radio show on SRG SSR, the Swiss public broadcaster, they teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, inaugurating a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. Landsberg is an American citizen from New York, NY. The first recording project to include Landsberg was Behind the Barn, Vol. 2, released in 1997. The Kruger Brothers moved to the United States in 2002, and are based in Wilkesboro, NC.The group is highly regarded within the world of acoustic music in North America, in particular by those within the industry. They have also gained the attention of some of the musicians, including Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Tut Taylor, and Bobby Hicks, that once served as models. Watson has said, The Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as Ive ever played with. I love to play music with them.In 2013, Jens Kruger was named the fourth recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass Music. The prize, created and endowed by Martin, recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the field of five-string banjo, Jens was selected by a committee that included Martin, Pete Wernick, Bla Fleck, Alison Brown, J.D. Crowe,Tony Trischka and others.Jens Kruger has been inducted to the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame, and has been nominated for Banjo Instrumentalist of the year by the International Bluegrass Musician Association (IBMA) in 2014 and has received commissions for his ensemble compositions that include through the National Endowment for the Arts and Chamber Music America.

Black Mountains Stephen McBean turned 16 after Woodstock but before Varg started burning down Norwegian churches. And yet, until just two short years ago, McBean had lived his entire adolescence and adult life without a proper drivers license, that first and most coveted ticket to personal independence. Black Mountains new album, Destroyer, is imbued with all that wild-ass freedom and newfound agency (and anxiety and fear) that comes with one's first time behind the wheel.Destroyer, named after the discontinued single-run 1985 Dodge Destroyer muscle car, is structured around the feeling of driving a hot rod. The album exists in the middle of the early-to-mid 80s Los Angeles war between punk and hair metal - its exhilarating, spirited, and dangerous. Throughout, youthful themes run rampant: Boogie Lover cruises down the Sunset Strip, Horns Arising is a fill-up at a desert gas station just in time to see a UFO hovering near a mesa, and High Rise rounds out a sense of teenage discovery. To create Destroyer, McBean shacked himself up in his rehearsal space and invited over friends from the endless rocknroll highway, bringing to life 22 songs. While some were laid back into shallow graves to dig up once again at a later date, the others were left above ground and polished and given life, some transformed by longtime band member Jeremy Schmidt. This generation of Black Mountain also sees new members Rachel Fannan (Sleepy Sun) and Adam Bulgasem (Dommengang & Soft Kill) as well as familiar collaborators Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips), Kid Millions (Oneida) and John Congleton (St. Vincent, Swans). Collectively, theres a renewed vitality to Black Mountain on Destroyer a seasoned, veteran of heady hard rock thats found new, young muscles to flex and roads to explore.

Description:
It may be Malaprop's most jam-packed author event ever. This hybrid literary and natural history anthology showcases sixty species of Southern Appalachia, one of the most biodiverse areas on earth, with species accounts, illustrations by seven artists of the region, and poems, most commissioned for the anthology from contemporary writers. From the iconic and inveterate--such as the speckled trout, flying squirrel, copperhead, katydid, and black bear--to the elusive, intermittent, and endangered--whippoorwill, Carolina gorge moss, chucky madtom, lampshade spider--the anthology combines art and science to help the reader experience this region's immense ecological and artistic wealth and to know place in broadest, poetic sense. This event will feature readings by contributors Debra Allbery, Mildred Barya, Anna Lena Phillips Bell, Lee Ann Brown, Nickole Brown, Jesse Graves, Cathryn Hankla, Gary Hawkins, John E.Lane, Kevin McIlvoy, Sandra Meek, Thorpe Moeckel, Jim Peterson, Susan Underwood, Lamar Wilson, William Wright. In addition, biologist Chick Gaddy will give a 10-minute talk about his work consulting for this anthology.
